Description
BACK IN THE early 1980s the world of hard rock was reverberating to an avalanche of new and exciting young bands operating under the banner of the NWOBHM. It was a time when anyone could pick up a guitar, knock out a riff, record their own songs and release their music independently. There were no barriers, apart from the limits of their own ambition, and for most the sky was the limit. It was into this bubbling cauldron that Midlands based five piece Dark Star launched themselves.

Shortly after forming, they recorded a demo that included the seminal NWOBHM track ‘Lady Of Mars’, a song that was subsequently included on the ‘Metal For Muthas Volume II Cut Loud’ album. It was a track that secured much acclaim amongst the rock cognoscenti, leading to a record deal with the newly formed Avatar label and the recording of this, their debut album originally released in 1981.

Unlike most of the NWOBHM’s penchant for a raucous cacophony of fast riffs, Dark Star’s aspirations were far broader in scope harnessing a penchant for melody and muscle. Not exactly prog rock, the band’s music is carefully crafted eliciting comparisons with Praying Mantis and early Def Leppard. Recorded in just ten days at Spaceward Studios, Cambridge, the album stands proud as one of the cornerstones of a movement that thrilled and motivated an entire generation of hard rock fans.

24-bit remastering from source tapes, 3,500 word essay about the making of the album, full band involvement, enhanced artwork and photos spread out over a 12 page full colour booklet.

An extremely obscure but well-regarded NWOBHM band I am very surprised to see this one get the treatment from Rock Candy. I've only ever heard a couple of songs but "Lady Of Mars" is a classic and should've been a hit.

You can hear elements of Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, UFO, Deep Purple and early Def Leppard but they songs wre for the most part a few cuts below in terms of writing and production quality of those acts. Still well worth hearing.
