Twelve songs of life and circumstance through the eyes of Southside Johnny and his roadworn troubadours, The Poor Fools. Tales of lost love at the border (Mexicali Waltz); the celebration of The Good Life from a life of making music (So Good); situational confusion in a seedy hotel room (Blood From A Stone); and a stone cold Chicago Blues treatment of a Dylan Classic (Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues).

The Poor Fools sing of ramblin' on (Soon I Will Be Gone), dysfunctional family fun (Randy Newman's Old Kentucky Home), the sense of unsaid trouble in paradise (Beneath Still Waters), and also lay down some home-fried swamp Rhythm & Blues (Down Home Girl/Something You Got).

Multi-instrumentalists and singers, all—musically, The Poor Fools ride the Mystery Train to wherever it takes them, and you'll probably wanna jump on for life to join em'.

Tracklisting and further info courtesy of Backstreets:

A rootsier direction for Southside Johnny Lyon, his band the Poor Fools have released their highly-anticipated debut CD Songs From the Barn on LeRoy Records. Songs From the Barn was recorded between December 2011 and December 2012, in between both the Asbury Jukes' and the Poor Fools' heavy touring schedules, at Sanctuary Sound II in New Jersey, a former horse barn -- hence the title -- that was converted into a recording studio by owner and longtime pal Jon Bon Jovi. With an "Americana-ish" tone, mixing Country, Blues, R&B, and rock 'n' roll, the album includes six all new original tracks written by Southside and longtime collaborator Jeff Kazee, along with their versions of cover songs made popular by Randy Newman, Bob Dylan, Bo Diddley, Lucinda Williams and Alvin "Shine" Robinson.
The Poor Fools line-up captured here includes Southside and Kazee, who produced together, along with John Conte, Neal "The Dude" Pawley, and Tommy Byrnes, Francis Valentino, and Sister Soozie Tyrell. Multi-instrumentalists and singers, all -- musically, The Poor Fools ride the Mystery Train to wherever it takes them, and you'll probably wanna jump on for life to join 'em.

Review from Newark Star-Ledger:

Songs From the Barn
Southside Johnny and the Poor Fools (Leroy)

The rock firebrand who cut "Pills and Ammo" in 2010 didn’t seem capable of checking his fury or urgency long enough to make a pastoral folk album. Never underestimate Southside Johnny Lyon: With the Poor Fools, he has successfully recasted himself as backwoods balladeer, throaty and wise, compassionate and empathetic, and fun to hang with.

On "Songs From the Barn," he’s in a gently reflective mood, too. "So Good" tells the story of the Jukes or a Shore band quite like them; "Winter in Yellowknife" is the tale of a painful retreat from a former relationship; and the gorgeous, soulful "Gone Underground" is a love letter flung into the void. Longtime pianist Jeff Kazee is the co-star here — he co-wrote many of the best songs with Southside, and brightens many of the tracks with his sprightly voice. The Poor Fools round out the album with engaging covers of material by Bob Dylan ("Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues"), Randy Newman ("Old Kentucky Home") and country legend Dallas Frazier ("Beneath Still Waters"). Call it "Another Side of Southside," and a testament to the flexibility and inspiration of one of New Jersey’s favorite sons.
