Quote: Jay Leno is out, Jimmy Fallon is in?
Jay Leno is out at "The Tonight Show" and Jimmy Fallon is in, according to The New York Times' Bill Carter, who also reports today the show is coming back to New York City, after coming to you from sunny Burbank California for the past 40 years.
"The idea that Jimmy was getting the show was kind of out there because Jay has got one contract that he's working on, he's 62, so there was ... an expectation he would be leaving soon," said Carter.
"What is really surprising is the move back to New York," adds the Times journalist. "There are a lot of reasons for it, I think they all feel the energy of New York helps Fallon."
There are African nations that have had smoother leadership transitions than "The Tonight Show's" game of musical chairs. NBC had to pay Conan O'Brien $45 million to re-install Jay Leno. Then there was a battle between Leno and David Letterman chronicled so memorably in "The Late Shift" also by Carter.
The move to New York may make it difficult to book guests, but Carter says the late night talent will lure those Hollywood stars to the east coast.
"If you have Jimmy Kimmel out there, [you have] two shows going head to head for bookings," says Carter.
But will Leno really leave this time? There is no deal for the timetable of the transition, just "an understanding," says Carter, who adds that Leno has a contract that goes until fall of 2014.
"I think from Jay's point of view he will work until they tell him to stop," says Carter. "The last time this happened, something changed, so maybe he thinks something will change again. And you can't blame him."
Moreover, the heir to the throne is young, and some question Fallon's readiness for the prime time slot.
NBC executives "undoubtedly have decided yes or near yes," says Carter. Fallon has hosted a show for just four years; O'Brien did it for 14, and Letterman for 11.
"This is a much faster path to the 11:30 slot than anybody has had before," says Carter. But it is a different time in television, and things are changing.
NBC executives "want to have a new kind of a show," says Carter. "They want to have young blood." http://thelead.blogs.cnn.com/2013/03/20 ... llon-is-in

Sadly, that's probably the case. He was the only clear winner out of the Conan/Leno brouhaha years ago. He should just stick with Late Night. He took over, made it his own, and is doing well. It's possible that NBC is forcing him in some way, strong-arm contractual negotiations or whatever. Not that it matters to me too much, as I never watch these shows anyway. I enjoy the socially shared Fallon clips, though. Especially the singing impersonations and Timberlake appearances.

I think this is a good move. Fallon's online videos will be unaffected by the time shift, and will bear the name of the flagship series rather than the secondary series which is good for NBC's brand. Of course this could all implode dramatically. That seems to happen a lot with The Tonight Show.

Clearly, what they should do to ease the transition is give Leno a lead-in show during primetime. That seems like a surefire way to drive viewers from Leno's show to Fallon's tonally similar Tonight Show. I'm, frankly, amazed they haven't thought of this themselves.

Makes me wonder if it is Lorne Michaels that has always been behind the remove Jay crowd. He would produce the 11:30 and 12:30 slot. Fallon moving the show to New York pretty much guarantees the the ratings will go lower. Its odd that the sources quote the fear of Kimmel capturing the youth market....his ratings are performing lower than Nightline was doing last year.. Whatever happened to that Conan fellow? These guys are fighting over a timeslot and format that is a real talent killer. The 12:30 slot seems to allow more freedom to be creative

It's amazing how Leno gets pushed around by NBC.The guy has been winning his timeslot for most of the 20 years.he's had the show and is still leading in total viewers, yet NBC throws Leno under the bus every chance they get. They even had Leno make the official announcement of his replacement by Conan on his own show.Carson would never had put up with that.

It's because his show barely makes more money than his competitors. It is watched by a lot of geezers who don't buy anything. And they will die sooner.

Leno strikes me as something of a dolt. It's said that as a child,he let the other kids hit him on the head with a hammer. He seems to have a passive personality, even letting himself be bullied by his manager. Any other TV star who's been winning his timeslot, especially at NBC,the 5th. rated network, would be throwing his weight around a lot more than Leno seems to.

Besides having the most total viewers by a wide margin (which does include a substantial geezer population) Leno is winning the 18-49 demographic most nights too. I don't like him, but a lot of people do and they're not just the elderly. Getting rid of him now seems an odd strategy, particularly for a network whose primetime ratings are so abysmal. It will be a challenge for Fallon to maintain Leno's ratings, and I don't think there's much chance he will better them, even in the 18-49.
