Not sure if we have done this one before, but I was just thinking about albums that I have purchased multiple times, on different platforms such as:

    Vinyl record
    Cassette tape (Pre-recorded)
    8-Track tape (Pre-recorded)
    Reel-to-Reel tape (Pre-recorded)
    Mini-Disc
    DAT
    CD
    DVD
    Blu-Ray
    USB stick
    MP3/iTunes
    ...other...

**** NOTE **** This does not mean buying every CD re-issue of the same title (such as My Aim is True ), because that only counts as one type of media.

So, what releases have you ever purchased on at least 3 different formats, and why ??

For example, I bought the compilation Standing on the Beach , by The Cure, on vinyl initially, then had to spring for the cassette version because the tape included a bunch of hard-to-find b-sides as a bonus. Finally, I bought the collection once more when it was released on CD format. (Technically, the Staring at the Sea VHS video collection with the same song line-up probably would count as a fourth different platform for the same material)

Exile on Main St , by The Rolling Stones

I first bought Exile on a pre-recorded cassette tape at a Sears Roebuck department store, of all places.

A year or two later, I proceeded to buy the two-record vinyl set, for the better sound.

And of course, I eventually bought the same title on CD (and again for the remaster album replica, and the Deluxe Edition, etc)

I have a bunch of albums on SACD (and a handful on DVD-A) which I've also owned on CD and vinyl. Never liked tape formats as pre-recorded media, only got them for making copies.

I have too many to mention (or remember) on vinyl, pre-recorded cassette, and CD.

Nothing to do with bonus tracks......
Only that in the 70s/80s, I had the vinyl, couldn't stand pops and scratches, so I bought cassette versions....easier to take in cars and on trips........then starting in 1987, bought CDs since it seemed like the best format. Had a fair amount also on pre-recorded 8 track when I got my uncle's old cars and his collection......they're long gone.

The Essential Jimi Hendrix Vol 1-2 might be the only I have/had in 4 formats.

The first stereo I took to college had a built-in 8-track player. I never had more than a handful of prerecorded 8-track tapes, and I gave 'em all away to a college buddy who had a player in his car.

Anyway, 2 titles for sure on 8-track, vinyl, and CD: This Is The Moody Blues, and Wind and Wuthering by Genesis.

Do all those Stones SACD hybrids count as a separate medium?

The Canadian group Crowbar of "Oh What A Feeling" fame.

First I had the vinyl.
Then I put it on 8-track for the car.
When 8-track went away, it was time for cassette.
Then it was time for CDs.
And later I repurchased one in better condition that wasn't available on CD.
And now they are all digitized in iTunes and on my iPhone.
In fact, I also made a video recording of "Oh What A Feeling" when the group reformed about three or four years ago for the first time in decades.
Someday I'll have them all implanted with neuron-based technology.

Since I had an 8-track recorder, there are several others that would have seen similar treatment over the years (as well as purchased ones), from vinyl to 8-track to cd. During the Cassette Age, I would usually try to find tapes of albums I didn't already have on vinyl, or I would make mix tapes for the road.

I bought much of my collection on Cassette and then started buying it again over on Cd. But which albums do I have on at least three formats? Funkadelic America Eats Its Young and One Nation Under A Groove on Cassette, CD and LP. Plus I have Cosmic Slop on Cassette, CD and 8-track but I only have the 8-track because I found it in the garbage. Someone had a bunch of 8-tracks in a box with the equipment and speakers out on their curb one day.

And Jimi Hendrix AYE?, Axis and EL on Cassette, LP and CD.

Plenty but I know I have Tommy by The Who on cassette, vinyl, CD and SACD. Who's Next too.

i don't think i ever owned anything on 3 different types of media.

i always recorded my own 8-tracks and cassettes, never bought a single pre-recorded on in my life that i can recall at least.

Only ones that I can think of are The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here. I never did tape...went from vinyl to CD and that is it. The only reason I have the Floyd titles in 3 different media are because of the BluRay included in the Immersion sets....so I've had those in vinyl, CD and BluRay. I no longer have the vinyl for these titles.

The more I think about it, I have 5 Opeth titles (Still Life, Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries, Watershed, Heritage) on vinyl, CD and DVD. Still have all the different formats for these in my possession.

Interesting list--if I only included albums prerecorded on cassette, very few titles make the cut. To the best of my reccollection...

Cassette, Vinyl, CD:
Led Zeppelin, "The Song Remains The Same" and the untitled fourth album
The Rolling Stones, "Metamorphosis"
The Who, "The Who By Numbers", "Who's Missing", The Who SIngs My Generation"
Both Spinal Tap albums--the vinyl "Break Like The Wind" is a picture disc.
Janis Joplin, "Janis" original soundtrack

I also have "Who's Next" and "Tommy" on Vinyl, CD, and 8-track tape, although I've never played the 8-tracks--probably paid 99 cents apiece for them.

Very likely others I'm forgetting--seems to me there are probably some Alice Cooper and Bruce Springsteen titles; possibly "Toys In The Attic" by Aerosmith as well--if I'm a little vague, it's because I haven't bought a pre-recorded cassette in probably twenty years. I also probably own vinyl for which it really doesn't even register with me that I actually own, included with ultra-deluxe boxed sets.

I got rid of my 8-tracks years ago, but at some point I've owned the following in that configuration as well as LP and CD:
The Beach Boys - "Endless Summer"
Billy Joel - "The Stranger"
Fleetwood Mac - "Rumours"

Right now, I think Pink Floyd "The Dark Side Of The Moon" is the only one I've got on three different types of media: LP, CD and DVD-Audio (although that's a burned copy of the Immersion box set, so not sure if that counts).

I've also ripped my entire CD collection onto a hard drive, so if those MP3's & WMA's count, there are probably several other titles I have on digital, CD and LP.

One of my old neighbors had This Is The Moody Blues on pre-recorded reel-to-reel tape, likely obtained from Columbia House club. I borrowed it and dubbed a copy of it onto cassette, and liked it so much that I purchased the title on vinyl record. Oddly, I have never seen a copy of this on CD :-o

Well, in that case, I've got a bunch of dual-layered discs. :D

This Is the Moody Blues marked the first album appearance of "Simple Game," which was the b-side of "Ride My See-Saw" in the UK. It was also one of the first CDs I bought at Discorama, which would've been in 1990. Looks like import copies are still available for fairly cheap on Amazon:

If you ripped from an existing format instead of buying another copy, that does not really count, Rich. Sort of like taping onto cassette, sorry.

One title that I have purchased as a digital download, even though I already owned the CD, was Under the Covers Vol 2 by Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs. Unfortunately, that was the only way that I could find to obtain all of the second disc of ten bonus tracks. However, at least I didn't pay full price, I was able to use some Amazon credits to soften the blow a little.

Think I had probably 20-30 that make the cut for cassette/LP/CD. I believe I was buying pre-recorded cassettes for a pretty short time as a teenager until I got a decent turntable & then recorded LP's to cassette. I was probably getting the cassettes through Columbia House. Some I can recall owning in those three formats:

History-America's Greatest Hits
Dan Fogelberg - first 4 albums
Santana - 1st 3 albums
Crosby Stills Nash - CSN

Back in those teenage years with Columbia House, we used to join multiple family members to get the introductory offers multiple times (both cassettes & LP's), even our cats & dogs would become record club members. I recall sometimes the dog or cat would get some sort of credit card offer after being in the record club, but they were smarter than me & always declined those!

Well, I'm guessing we're not going to count Quad as a separate medium from LP's, so since I wasn't much for cassettes, the only ones I know for sure would be Queensryche's Operation: Livecrime (CD, VHS and DVD) and probably Rush Moving Pictures (cassette, CD and BR).

I'm thinking just Sgt. Pepper. I had my folks' vinyl copy, then my aunt (who was CFO for MFSL back in the late '80s/early '90s) gave me an MFSL cassette recorded straight off the master tapes, then I bought it on CD.

The one that immediately came to mind was New England's debut. I bought it on 8-track first, then vinyl, then cassette, and finally on CD. I was ready to say that was the one, but then I remembered...

And this is not comprehensive because I'm afraid to actually look them up in my database, but my list includes:

- City Boy, "The Day The Earth Caught Fire" (Cassette/Vinyl/CD)
- Planet P Project (I just remembered this as I was typing), "Planet P Project". I think I actually bought this when it was just Planet P. (C/V/CD) Just saw it in my db - my album and cassette are "Planet P", the CD is "Planet P Project".
- Zappa, "Joe's Garage" (C/V/CD)
- Kiss, "Alive!" (8/V/CD)
- Kiss, the solo albums, all four of them in at least 8/V/CD, some on cassette
- Kiss, "Dynasty" (8/V/CD)
- Kiss, "Music From The Elder" (C/V/CD)
- Abba, "Voulez-Vous" and "The Album" (8/V/CD)
- Black Sabbath, "We Sold Our Soul For Rock N Roll" (8/C/CD)
- BOC, "Some Enchanted Evening" (8/V/CD)
- BOC, "Fire Of Unknown Origin" (C/V/CD)

Okay, I did look at my database list a bit, but I'm stopping because it's becoming way too painful...

Here's one I didn't expect - Olivia Newton-John, "Totally Hot" (8/V/CD). Here's one I should have known - Ted Nugent, "Nugent" (C/V/CD). And I had at least the first two Ozzy albums on C/V/CD. The cassettes got worn out.

I've had recordings of "Rhapsody In Blue" on cassette, vinyl and CD, but they weren't technically the same album ... so, no, I guess.
