Music: Interview with Sharleen Spiteri (Texas) Posted September 27, 2012 by Dee Murphy in Music
Ahead of their Arthur’s Day headline appearance, we grabbed a few minutes with Texas’s Sharleen Spiteri for a quickfire round of snappy little questions. To Sharleen! To llamas!
Hi Sharleen! How are you keeping?
Very well, thank you!
So, you’re playing Arthurs Day tonight…
I am indeed.
And uh… and where is that?
I don’t think I’m allowed to tell you yet where we’re playing. All I can say is that I’m in Limerick at the moment…
Intriguing. So what else are Texas up to these days?
We have just finished making a new album, so we’re mixing that. And we played festivals throughout the summer.
Do you guys like playing in Ireland?
Of course! It’s always good fun and there’s always good audiences. It’s been a while since we’ve played in Ireland so it’s good to be back.
Be honest. Do you drink Guinness yourself?
I do actually. I don’t tend to drink Guinness much when I’m in London but I’ll definitely have a Guinness when I’m here because it does taste very different.
Any moments that stand out over the band’s career?
Christ, there’s so many. Probably the most stand out thing is that we have been going so long; we’ve had such a long career. Not many are so lucky to have such a long career in the business. So the fact that people are still interested in seeing us and still buying our records, I think that’s pretty special.
It certainly is. 25 years going, you must have had the odd embarrassing moment on stage…
Not really. It’s kind of weird. I’m 45 years old and there’s nothing in particular standing out.
What would you be doing if you weren’t in Texas?
Oh, I don’t know. I have no idea. I’m in Texas. I’ve been in Texas for such a long time that I don’t know. Before I was in Texas I was a hairdresser, so I did have a job before I was doing this, but I can’t say I’d still be hairdressing! I’ve been really lucky in my life; I pushed hard and worked hard and I got a lot of pleasure out of it.
Driven indeed. So what do you do in your spare time?
I don’t really have that much spare time to be honest, because I have a ten year old, and Texas can be pretty full-on so when ever I have time outside of Texas I’m usually spending the time with my daughter! I also just like to chill out, relax and watch movies.
Do you have any crazy stories from touring?
Probably nothing I’d be able to say!
How do you get on as a band?
Well, the fact that we are still together after 25 years pretty much says it all!
When will the new album be out?
The album will be out in March and at the moment it will be called The Conversation.

Thanks for the information, Patrick! Glad to hear there's a new album coming. I'd assumed they'd broken up, since Spiteri's last few efforts have been solo ones. I still prefer the rootsy-rock sound of their first two or three albums--their debut, "Southside," is one of my all-time favorites--but I'll be eager to hear this one.

Saw where they were performing a song of that name recently and saying it was from a new album; glad we finally have a little more info. Texas is one of my favorite bands; I can't wait.

Momo, I couldn't agree more about Southside. What a fantastic album, and it holds up really well all these years later. I was a huge fan of their first three albums...saw them in small clubs in New York on the first two tours, and collected all the b-sides...but their slicker material starting with White On Blonde didn't do as much for me. I liked them but they didn't seem like the same band (a similar thing happened for me with Simply Red). Eventually I lost touch with their music, but I'll continue to hold out hope that they return to the sound of those early records, or even something different than anything they've done before.

I was a big fan of the first four but Southside, Ricks Road and White On Blonde were my favs. They kinda lost me when they went pop. Looking forward to the new one.

Texas announce new album ‘The Conversation’ Brand new album to be released May 20th // Live shows in Glagow, London and Paris by Ffion Davies +, March 7th
In their 25th anniversary year Texas release their brand new studio album The Conversation through [PIAS] on May 20th 2013. The album will be preceded by the single also called The Conversation on May 13th.
Texas’s eighth album, The Conversation is their first in eight years and is the latest in a career that has seen the band sell over 30 million albums worldwide with a succession of multi-platinum albums White on Blonde, The Hush and Greatest Hits. This overdue return in 2013 clearly redefines and confidently re-introduces the band afresh with tracks written and produced by singer/guitarist Sharleen Spiteri and bassist Johnny McElhone and featuring collaborations with singer-songwriter Richard Hawley and Bernard Butler.
The Conversation is an album splitting its seams with the joy of a long-proven pop force creating a collection of songs rich enough in melody and emotion to deserve filing beside the best of the band’s previous million-selling hits. The album was recorded in Glasgow, London and at Richard Hawley’s studio in Sheffield where the seven tracks he worked on went on to form the backbone of The Conversation: a perfect marriage of Hawley’s 50s rock’n’roll frills and the timeless Texas magnetism to cast-iron melodies.
Texas will launch the album with three live shows in Glasgow, London and Paris, full details tba.

I can't wait for this one. This band had never disappointed me in all the years I've been listening to them. Sometimes good bands do stick around for the long hall. Maybe they'll actually take the time to tour in Texas this time around? If you've never heard of them do yourself a favor and check them out, if & when you have the time!

I recently got the deluxe version of this via Amazon UK, and, though I need to spend a little more time with it, I really like it a lot. On first listen, it sounds to me like a little bit of a return to their early, more roots-y rock sound that was so satisfying on their first albums, mixed with the more polished and slick pop of their later music.
The deluxe edition contains a second disc of live Scotland performances of many of their hits, which usually doesn't interest me, but this 2-disc version was nearly £2 cheaper than the regular 1-disc version.

Agreed Momo. It's definitely a lot less poppy than their last couple. Don't you feel it has bit of a 60s vibe to it? Not enough blues/soul for me unfortunately.
Definitely a step in the right direction, but sadly there isn't much that really grabbed me. It isn't bad, but I don't think there was a single song on there that I really liked or wanted to hear again.
On the other hand, I thought the bonus disc was really good. I just have that stuff live on so many other things, it doesn't seem really necessary.
