With the recent thread about songs you've gotten sick of, I thought it might be fun to look at the mirror image of that. What are some songs that you originally disliked but that grew on you?

Some of mine are:

Car Wash - Rose Royce
It was disco when I still hated disco, it got way overplayed, and what was up with that artist name anyway? But damned if those handclaps haven't wormed their way into my brain over the years, and I find myself singing this one a lot when I'm working around the house. Just ask my wife, who probably is sick of it now.

Goodnight Tonight - Wings
See disco comment above. And this wasn't even hardcore disco. I really don't know what I was thinking.

To Sir With Love - Lulu
This song was never designed for a nine year old, but that's what I was when my sister had the 45 on heavy rotation in our house. Now I'm older and at least a little wiser.

Midnight Train To Georgia - Gladys Knight & The Pips
Another one for the "you'll appreciate this when you're older" category, and I do.

Sister Christian - Night Ranger
Music snobbery kept me from liking this when it was originally popular but the song was used so well in the drug deal sequence from Boogie Nights that I knew I'd have to rethink it. Yes, it's excessive and overblown and, yes, I now love it.

For me, it's mostly soul songs that came out when I was about 11-14. Things like "Me and Mrs Jones". Didn't get them then, love them now.

I disliked quite a few Beatles songs back when I first got into them.

Now, of course, I think they are all equally fab. :ohyes:

I really hated "Electric Avenue" by Eddy Grant when it came out. It's still not a favorite of mine, but it takes me back to high school and instead of getting angry whenever I hear it (which was the case back then), I occasionally enjoy it now.

Strange bedfellows for sure, but two that immediately come to mind are "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" by Linda Ronstadt and "Bust a Move" by Young MC.

Just curious - did you dislike the Zevon original or was it just Linda's version?

Cisco Kid ~ War (it reminded me of someone I didn't care for at the time but I got over that and love the song now)

National Anthem ~ Radiohead (though I still don't care much for this band)

Sledgehammer ~ Peter Gabriel (took me quite awhile to like this one)

Blew ~ Nirvana (only in the last few years have I begun my appreciation of Nirvana)

I liked a lot of that 70s soul stuff at the time but I find that I appreciate and enjoy it even more now. We were in the middle of the golden age of soul and we didn't know it.

I liked Zevon's version so much that I thought the LR cover was a big mistake. Took a couple of years, but I got over it. Still like Zevon's better, but I like hers just fine, too.

I grew up on Paul and Wings mostly. I didn't get the Beatles at all. Till I was about 18 and was alone at my aunt's and uncle's house while they were away.I then discovered the Abbey Road album in their basement and played it for a joke. I was so blown away that I must've played it endlessly for a whole day. I am now officially a Beatles fanatic. :ohyes:

Usually its songs that are overplayed.

Most Stained songs, with, Its Been A While and Outside at the top of the list.
Do You Wanna Die by Toad The Wet Sprocket.
And Take on Me by A-Ha.

I'm sure there are more but those are the only examples I can think of right now.

I think you mean "Possum Kingdom" by The Toadies.

"Mr. Jones" and "Round Here" by Counting Crows
"The Boys are Back in Town" by Thin Lizzy; not exactly in love with the song, but it's pretty good.

Do You Really Want To Hurt Me by Culture Club. Hated it when it came out, danced to it with a girl I really liked in college at an '80s-theme party, and it suddenly clicked for me.

I don't think I've ever heard this song start to finish.

As far as Culture Club goes, though, this is my fave:

Boys Are Back in Town

Almost everything by Rush in the 70's (I've always liked Workingman, but didn't like ANYTHING else by them until a few years ago). I enjoy most if not all of there 70's heyday albums now.

Money, by Pink Floyd. I used to hear it on the radio and hate it. Now, I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan and love the song, along with the rest of the record.

I'm the opposite on Money. Liked it when it came out; it's been overplayed for me.

Man, I've liked all the songs you guys have hated. :D
I really can't think of any songs I hate....I even like Piano Man and We Built This City.

Tired of some over played classic rock songs but I still enjoy them away from radio.
