Netting several hits like the funk infused "Free" & the soulful "Lowdown," the top charter Chicago III was a more organic affair than their previous works, allowing its principal writers Robert Lamm, James Pankow, Terry Kath & Peter Cetera to develop more introspective thoughts into successful musical forms. Friday Music & Chicago are proud to annnounce the ltd. anniversary edition expanded remaster of Chicago III. For this event, Chicago's Lee Loughnane located the rare 45 mono edit of the smash hit "Free" & the rarely heard Japanese version of "Lowdown." + Original art elements from LP!

OK-with the bonus cuts and the other stuff I'll bite. I love this album and just listened to the Rhino remaster last week which sounds pretty good to me, but not great. I'm curious what they did (if anything) sonically here.

And with the band involved, is Friday doing the whole catalogue? Or, at least offering 18, 19 and 21?

I'll wait for reviews/comparisons to the Rhino before buying this one yet again.

FYI: CTA, II, and IV are getting the MoFi Hybrid SACD treatment this year.

Why would they do IV? That's the Carnegie Hall box and it's not a good listen at all.

I thought 4 was studio. I would be somewhat interested in Carnegie, but a 4 disc MFSL would be way beyond my budget.

After Chicago III, Chicago V was the next studio album. And I love that one too-some great experimental stuff and Pop stuff on there. Chicago V also began a string of 5 straight #1 albums.

I looked it up after your post. That was the one with Saturday In The Park which completely turned me off to Chicago. I hated (& still do) their surgery pop after Chicago 3; though I do like Live In Japan.

I do hate "Saturday In The Park"! But every one of their albums had experimental and Jazz-oriented material. Chicago V has some amazing stuff like "State Of The Union" and "A Hit By Varese". They did have a lot of Pop hits this is true (I also think those songs are great), but so did the first 3 albums. I think you're missing some seriously great music on Chicago V to Chicago XIV if you dismiss those albums as Pop, but the first 3 are obviously the seriously adventurous of the catalogue along with Chicago VII-all the double albums not surprisingly!

Live In Japan is OK to me-better than Carnegie Hall but still of less than robust sound quality and too much aimless jamming.

But I do ask-what is surgery pop?

I'll be checking this out.

Oh, and I think Chicago V is a great album, and I love Saturday In The Park. I think the decline didn't really start until VIII.

Saturday In The Park = Barry Manilow? Really?

Yes, & I'll add any other Chicago hit after "3" to that list!

So, "Harry Truman", "Feelin' Stronger Every Day", "Dialogue" and such sound like Barry Manilow?

Apologies. It is actually Chicago VI that MoFi is doing. Chicago V was recently released on a Japanese Multichannel Hybrid SACD .

I just posted this in the Sunday Flyer thread, but it also belongs here:

I would be VERY CAREFUL on this & the other Chicago's. As I posted in another thread, the recent Friday Music Deep Purple cd set was the most brickwalled cd I have EVER heard. It had a Dynamic Range rating of 4. 6 was the previous worst I had ever seen, & the audio community usually considers DR 11 to be the lowest acceptable number.

I for one will not buy anything from FM without first auditioning it at this point. The DP was totally unlistenable.

This is my favorite track by them. The rhythm section really rocks.

Barry Manilow- "Only In Chicago"-this is a nice track from his Barry album.

Dr. Hook did some good surgery pop.
