Garcia Live Volume 1 Preorder

The first release from the newly-launched Garcia Live series features a recording from the historic Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey on March 1, 1980. The band performed an early and a late show on this evening, as was common at the time. The shows were originally multi-tracked on a 24-track mobile rig for WNEW's broadcast of the early show.

The band, which included Garcia on guitar and vocals, partner in crime John Kahn on bass, Ozzie Ahlers on Keys and Johnny de Foncesca on drums at the time, was wrapping up a three-week East Coast run with the performances on this evening. Highlights including a take on the Jimmie Rodgers penned rave-up, "That's All Right," an early show encore of "Deal" and a rollicking version of "That's What Love Will Make You Do" show Jerry and the band loose and fluid at the end of the tour.

Mixed by John Cutler and mastered by Joe Gastwirt.

Please note: Final artwork to come. Items in this department are available for pre-order. Orders are expected to ship on or around November 9, 2012. All items in your order will be held for shipment with the pre-order item, so please place a separate order if you would like non-pre-order items earlier.

While I have a couple, for me the best Garcia band was the tour with Maria Muldaur & Donna Jean (who I know I've criticized a lot with the Dead, but Muldaur seemed to keep Donna on pitch at the show I saw & the tapes I've heard).

I mentioned in another thread - this is a pretty decent release, but not as great as I would have hoped (particularly for kicking off yet another series of JGB / JG vault series). The guitar tone is a little 'grittier' than usual, and there are some definite highlights. But for all the stuff that it is in the vault, this would not have been my first choice. The JG solo vault releases have not had the best of luck of gaining traction, so I feel they should be even more precise in their selections.

Having listened to this release, and think it was so-so for a JGB release, I pulled out Kean College which was recorded two nights before. My opinion is that Kean is more dynamic and has more energy than the Capitol release. On the other hand there is no such thing as a bad Jerry gig.

I actually just sold my Kean. It never really hit me. I haven't heard this one yet.

I love the Kean shows.......and of those versions of After Midnight/Eleanor Rigby he was doing at the time was great.

(I also live about 20 minutes from Kean College.....sucks that I didn't really get into the Grateful Dead/Jerry yet at that point).
