Chris Morgan Hired to Write ‘Fast and Furious 6′ As Part Of Production Deal

Fast Five is still over a week from being released but its writer has not only been hired to write the sixth installment, he’s been given a brand new production deal. Chris Morgan, who wrote Wanted, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast and Furious and Fast Five in addition to the currently in production 47 Ronin starring Keanu Reeves, just signed a first-look-deal with Universal that’ll keep him writing and developing ideas at the studio for at least two years.

One of the first projects he’ll tackle is Fast and Furious 6, yet another sequel in the successful crime and car franchise. He’s also been rumored to be developing a Terminator movie with his Fast and Furious director Justin Lin as well as the cartoon adaptation Bakugan. After the jump, read some quotes from Morgan about the types of films he hopes to make.

The Hollywood Reporter exclusively broke the news of this deal and spoke to Morgan about it:

Quote:
I don’t want to be the guy who gets a vanity production deal and does nothing. I want to be the guy who goes out there and busts my ass and fixes broken stories and finds material to bring back — quite frankly, as a reward to the studio that has worked with me for so long. We have a very effective partnership, and we want to get some big movies off the ground.

What kind of movies is he talking about?

Quote:
I grew up on Raiders, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard. Those are in my wheel house. Those are the movies I want to find, I want to help make. They’re genre movies but heroic ones, ones that have a hyper-real sense to them. Summer movies.

Morgan was also previously attached to a Gears of War movie so, if you add that to Bakugan and Terminator, he’s certainly dealing with big movies. Let’s just hope that in addition to dealing with proven franchises, he also develops some new stories.

It was during the previous for the original Fast and the Furious, I turned to my friend Chuck, and know what I said? I said, "Chuck, pass the popcorn over here. Thanks. Know what I was thinking? I was thinking that is was during a preview for the movie, "The Matrix" that we were sitting in these exact same seats. And I looked over at you, and you remember what I said? I said, "Chuck, pass the popcorn over here. Thanks." Now that Matrix movie ended up being pretty good. I hear they are doing sequels. I know they are going to be AWE-SOME! Damn original story and I NEED to KNOW MORE. They are actually making both sequels at the same time just like they are making all those Lord of the Rings movies all at once. The first one was so freakin awesome. I can't wait for the other two. Some with the other two. But you know what, Chuck? Matrix, Lord of the Rings, those are awesome as trilogies. Three movies. Beginning, middle, end. Its a story right there. But you know what I'm thinking. Six. That is what this Fast and the Furious needs. This idea. This story. Three will never cut it. I NEED more. I won't be able to sleep because street racing. dang man. There is so much I need to know about street racing in little souped up cars. Hey Chuck, pass me more popcorn. Thanks."

Its nice to know I will finally be able to sleep at night. Its just so sad what happened to Chuck though. The guy was full of good times and good laughs.

'Fast And Furious 6' plot details revealed

The official plot synopsis for Fast And Furious 6 has been released.

Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson and Michelle Rodriguez have all reprised their roles from previous films in the series, while British actor Luke Evans has joined the cast for their latest adventure. Filming began in London last July (2012) and other locations used included Liverpool, Los Angeles, Scotland and the Canary Islands.

Explaining the set-up of the new movie, Universal Pictures' synopsis begins: "Since Dom (Diesel) and Brian's (Walker) Rio heist toppled a kingpin's empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe. But their inability to return home and living forever on the lam have left their lives incomplete."

The synopsis continues: "Meanwhile, Hobbs (Johnson) has been tracking an organisation of lethally skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries, whose mastermind (Evans) is aided by a ruthless second-in-command revealed to be the love Dom thought was dead, Letty (Rodriguez). The only way to stop the criminal outfit is to outmatch them at street level, so Hobbs asks Dom to assemble his elite team in London. Payment? Full pardons for all of them so they can return home and make their families whole again."

The first trailer is set to premiere during the Super Bowl this Sunday (February 3). Fast And Furious 6, whose official title has yet to be confirmed, will open in cinemas on May 24. The five previous F&F movies came out between 2001 and 2011 and collectively grossed over $1.5 billion (£950 million) worldwide.

I really liked the previous Fast And Furious. It ended up being a surprise for me. Great action sequences and the introduction of The Rock to the mix worked.

My problem with the franchise (well, one of the problems) is that the stunts are so precisely and obviously choreographed that it never seems like anybody is in danger.

Gotta give them credit for taking a lackluster franchise and turning it into box office success...word of mouth, over the top action, constant showings on tv, and a movie to movie continuity all help build this up into a blockbuster.

Dwayne Johnson could get his own spin-off movie after 'Fast & Furious 6'

Dwayne Johnson has revealed he could star in his own spin-off movie after the next Fast & Furious adventure.

Johnson made his debut as Diplomatic Security Service Agent Luke Hobbs in 2011's Fast Five and the character proved so popular that the idea of Luke Hobbs: The Movie was mooted. He will return as Hobbs in Fast & Furious 6, which arrives in cinemas on May 24.

Asked by Empire when Hobbs will be getting his own film, Johnson replied: "Possibly after this one, the next one [F&F 6]. I’m not quite too sure. I know that's the goal and we continue to build that character and have him take shape. But yes, I can’t wait.”

This movie is :AWESOME:

I've never seen a movie like this; so full of cliches and crowd pleasing moments, and most of them work, no matter how ridiculous they are.

This was my very first Fast flick, and I really dug it. From my review:
Quote:
...after seeing Fast & Furious 6, I get it. I totally do. To write it off as a mere "guy movie" is to do it a huge disservice. This is the action hero mythology of this current generation the same way Die Hard and Lethal Weapon were for mine. As the latest entry of a long-running series, it excels at deepening the characters while also tying together multiple threads from previous films in a way that feels fulfilling even to a newbie like me.

After absolutely loving part 6, I went back and watched 4 and 5.

It's amazing how much they upped their game for the new movie. The first movie, if memory served, was a pretty decent Point Break style cops & robbers movie, the fourth was a fairly dull direct sequel with a "this times it's personal" revenge story grafted onto it. Fast Five is a largely good but completely brain-dead heist film where you can see them trying to raise the emotional stakes... but completely failing.

Furious 6 just brings it all together. The all-star collection of cast members makes it an enjoyable ensemble movie which (thankfully) takes a lot of the heavy lifting away from Vin Diesel. The main plot is a total MacGuffin which only matters to The Rock and the main villain, while everyone else in the film is motivated by something which plays into the Family Theme which the movies have been unironically harping on since the first movie. While the film makes some insane leaps of logic (such as NATO standing down for the climatic dual with the fate of the world at stake), said leaps are almost always usually well-accepted movie cliches which this movie manages to play completely straight-faced... while simultaneously having lots of fun with it. This isn't someone doing the Whedon style "aren't I clever" gags as a half-apology to using a hoary cliche, this is them shamelessly doing it while The Rock looks you in the eye saying "are you going to do something about it?"

The movie's charm lies on that knife's edge balance. To work it has to invite the audience to rejoice in its total absurdity, but to never become a parody of itself. One of the best examples is probably The Rock, whose steroid enhanced body is both completely imposing and a constant source of amusement to the rest of the cast, a couple of whom can't stop cracking jokes about baby oil. This is the rarest of big, dumb movies; this is a big, dumb movie that isn't embarrassed by appearing dumb, while displaying a keen intelligence in its execution. Its the Gracie Allen of big, dumb action movies.
