Roger Waters‘ last studio album, 1992′s highly acclaimed Amused To Death, will be issued as a Stereo Hybrid SACD and 200-gram double LP later this year, by audiophile specialists Analogue Productions.
The album was originally mixed by Pink Floyd’s producer/engineer James Guthrie, and he will be mastering the new SACD from the original analog tapes. Renowned mastering engineer, Doug Sax, will work with Guthrie to master the LP.

I was a HUGE fan of Radio K.A.O.S. (still am) but never fully embraced Amused To Death. Now that I have a Blu-Ray player, which I assume has SACD capability, I should get this and maybe I'll finally get into it.

Seems like this would have been an appropriate candidate for a full surround SACD release rather than merely stereo... oh well, I'm sure it will still appeal to many PF/Waters fans.

No surround? No thanks. I'll just have to revisit my original CD pressing and be happy with that.

I was listening to the original release last night and it is audiophile quality already. It has always been one of those demo discs with plenty of spatial sound. Try and listen with an animal in the room sometime.

I should revisit it too. I always thought of it as a 72 minute-long slog full of great ideas in need of decent melodies.
That "yellow rose" song still makes cringe, though.

Every time that I revisit Roger Waters' solo albums I cringe with the thought that this is the guy who wrote most of the Pink Floyd material that I love so much.

It's hard to argue that, although I stand by my love of Radio K.A.O.S. which has a surprisingly good sense of humor. Pros & Cons... was pretty good but seemed incomplete. I'm much more of a Gilmour solo fan. His first two albums are all-time favorites that I can hear in my head without listening to them. In fact, I was just singing "Cruise" in my head this morning.

Would love to see a version of KAOS with the additional tunes (Molly's song, Going to Live in LA) put in.
It's been a while, but I seem to recall that one of those (Going To Live In LA) was on a 45 b-side I own, but I've never heard Molly's Song. Where is that from?

I also like Dave's solo material much more than Roger's. His last album, "On An Island" was quite excellent as was the accompanying tour.

I missed the tour but have the deluxe editions of both live albums/DVDs recorded in support of "On An Island." He put together a great band, and it was so nice to hear those amazing versions of "Echoes" with Richard Wright doing his original vocal parts. It's a shame he's not with us anymore. My only complaint about Gilmour's set lists on that tour is that he didn't seem to do anything from those first two solo albums. I guess the average fan prefers to hear only Floyd material and the new album, but those first two are brilliant.

Waters' solo catalogue is dismal is my take on it.
Pros And Cons is an unlistenable mess and truly awful, and Radio KAOS has some songs and moments but is bogged down by dated sounds and a truly ridiculous storyline.
Amused To Death has some very good moments and others that are truly awful including a ton of songs that are so wordy and overwrought with tirades it's a difficult listen for me to get through. I'd have to say it's the best of the 3 albums though.
I have no interest in his opera.
In The Flesh is a very good live album.
It's quite obvious he needed Floyd as much as they needed him. I've seen his dark Side and Wall tours and those were outstanding events but only because of the Floyd albums and other Floyd songs.

Pete, I'm not as harsh on Waters' catalog, but I can't say you're far off. I'm a huge fan of The Final Cut, which was essentially a Waters solo album, and Hitchhiking was a step down from that. I agree about the production choices of Radio K.A.O.S. but I looooove the storyline and the songs are mostly great. I saw Waters & Floyd several months apart at Madison Square Garden from almost the same seats, and I preferred the Waters show. That being said, Gilmour's output has been much more impressive. I just wish he would write & record more frequently.

You're much kinder than I am in your assessment.
You guys are tough. What's your take on The Final Cut, since it's so close to being a Waters solo album?
If you look back at the Floyd albums thread you'll see it's one of my favorite Floyd albums (I think Larry hated it and I totally understand).
I do not see it as a Waters solo album any more than The Wall was. The presence of Gilmour and Mason is still Floyd and Gilmour's guitar solos on that album are amazing. I wish Gilmour sang more than one song and it would feel more Floydish. But, I do indeed really like The Final Cut even though I do understand anyone's hatred for it!

I do seem to remember being on the same page regarding The Final Cut in the Floyd thread. I truly love that album, but I understand why a lot of people don't like it. I do see it as much more of a solo project for Waters than The Wall, because everyone else's contributions had diminished significantly AND Gilmour only sings the one song (and it's in his yelling voice as opposed to the softer voice he usually used to offset Waters' more abrasive tone). I stand by my love of Radio KAOS but I won't defend his solo discography.
