The Roots and Elvis Costello are making some sort of record together
By Marah Eakin January 22, 2013

The Roots are working on a record with Elvis Costello that should be out later this year. Roots drummer and resident good guy Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson tells Billboard that the collaborative project was sparked by Costello’s three appearances on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. “It was really love at first sight,” Questlove said. “The second time he came on, we surpassed the first one. So by the third time, he was like ‘Let’s stop messing around and do something together.’” That "something" turned into Costello and The Roots recording about 20 songs together, 12 to 14 of which should make the final product.

The Roots are also working on their own new record, & Then You Shoot Your Cousin, which Questlove says the group is “in the genesis” of right now. That album is expected to see the light of day sometime in late 2013 or early 2014.

In very tangentially related news, Questlove has also been producing D’Angelo’s long-awaited Voodoo follow-up, which he says is “99-percent done” and should be released by RCA Records sometime this year.

I am really excited about this. Haven't been excited about an Elvis Costello in a while...

Questlove: Elvis Costello and the Roots Recorded 'A Brilliant Album'

Collaboration grew out of Costello's 'Fallon' appearances

Elvis Costello clicked with the Roots so well during his various appearances on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon that a collaboration with them snowballed from one song to an entire album that seems like it will be ready for Record Store Day on April 20th.

Roots drummer Questlove recently talked with NYU Local about jamming with Costello in the Roots' dressing room studio at Fallon and the album they made together. "After Elvis Costello's third appearance, we liked him so much we were like, 'Hey why don’t we make a record?'" said Questlove. "What went from being one song to be released on Record Store Day became 'Why don't we try four songs?' Now we have a brilliant album."

Questlove says he's more than pleased with the nearly finished album, the title of which Costello wants to keep under wraps for now. "In the whole history of the Roots, I have never bragged on an album first, but I actually love this record," Questlove said.

The drummer also said the Roots will start working with Al Green on his next album, and that he's going to team with comedian Amy Schumer on a special. He's teaching a course at NYU this semester called "Classic Albums," and is currently working on D'Angelo's long-awaited new album.

That would be especially odd given that The Roots already released an album called Things Fall Apart...

Elvis Costello & The Roots 'Wise Up Ghost' September 17th Release on Blue Note Records
http://www.elviscostello.com/news/elvis ... ecords/413

Image

May 29th, 2013 - New York, NY - Elvis Costello and The Roots have announced today that a collaborative album entitled Wise Up Ghost will be exclusively released by Blue Note Records on Monday 16th September 2013 in the UK and Tuesday September 17th 2013 in the USA.

The existence of the record was first revealed by ?uestlove as an aside during an interview with Billboard Magazine in January. A small number of test pressings were distributed as white labels on Record Store Day on the 20th of April but the full release will follow later in the year.

Most of the sessions took place in secret at Feliz Habitat Studios in the dead of night, while others were in plain sight at Costello’s Hookery Crookery Studios. Elvis described the record as “the shortest distance between here and there” and containing “both rhythm and what is read”. Ahmir says, “It's a moody, brooding affair, cathartic rhythms and dissonant lullabies. I went stark and dark on the music, Elvis went HAM on some ole Ezra Pound shit.”

It promises to be one of the most unexpected and surprising releases of 2013.

In addition to the fabulous Roots crew and friends, the record features a guest vocal appearance on “Cinco Minutos Con Vos” from La Marisoul, lead singer of the Los Angeles group, La Santa Cecilia.

The album was produced by longtime Roots associate, Steven Mandel together with Elvis Costello, and Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson.

Elvis Costello and The Roots team up on new album
By Mesfin Fekadu, AP Music Writer
Thursday, May 30, 2013

NEW YORK (AP) — When Elvis Costello and The Roots teamed up for a new album, they knew their pairing was unlikely and unconventional, so they secretly recorded music without the approval of their record labels.

"Sometimes if you ... get the record company involved, then people have ambition rather than starting to play, so we started to play," Costello said in a recent interview.

"We did it without a label or deadline pressure," said Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson as he sat next to Costello. "This absolutely was a passion project."

They began recording "Wise Up Ghost," which will be released Sept. 17, two years ago. It's a moody, 12-track album that features both new songs and others borrowed from Costello's catalog, including the drum-filled "Sugar Won't Work," which samples from "You Left Me in the Dark," and the soft and simple "Tripwire," which takes from "Satellite."

The Roots first collaborated with Costello on NBC's "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," where the hip-hop group is the house band. They also worked with the 58-year-old British rocker at a Prince tribute concert in March.

"This is like our dream — that's all I can say," a smiling Questlove said. "This is the first project at 'Fallon' where I'm making my musical dreams come true."

Longtime Roots collaborator Steven Mandel co-produced "Wise Up Ghost" with Questlove and Costello.

"The thing I like most of all, the drums are really loud," Costello said. "I'm singing quite close, not having to yell to get it over."

The Roots released a collaborative album with John Legend in 2010. A year later, they released an album with Betty Wright.

Questlove says working alongside Costello, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, was scary.

"I was worried in case it didn't work. I knew I'd be the bad guy," he said.

It's not This Year's Model, but it's a helluva lot better than anything he's done in the last 15 years, minus Momofuku.

I think it's interesting, and honestly I'm happy to hear something other than another T-Bone Burnett collaboration! I'm looking forward to the rest of it...

Delivery Man and River in Reverse were excellent too, as was a large chunk of When I Was Cruel, IMO.

This has me intrigued...can't wait to hear more.

It's pretty good for current Elvis. Great funk grooves, but it lacks memorables tunes/melody.

Some of the songs are re-workings (sometimes lyric mixing) of earlier songs. I like the new version of "Pills And Soap" ("Stick Out Your Tongue") better than the original. "Cinco Minutos Con Vos" is pretty cool too.....like the woman sung Spanish lyrics.

This is definitely worth it if you're an Elvis completist, but it won't make my top 20 favorite Elvis Costello records, As for his recent albums, I'd rank it below When I Was Cruel, River In Reverse, Momofuku, Delivery Man and Brutal Youth.
