Cal Jam was already released on 1998's Then And Now and was very hissy though I've not heard it ever sounding great. The Welcome Back live album was also recorded in California so I'm not sure if this offers anything new, and there was a King Biscuit show as well which I believe was used on the live album-not 100% sure. I guess we'll see, but I'm doubtful this is anything but rehash.

The source tapes of this release might be from Allen Pamplin who's posted all of Cal Jam'74 that was broadcasted. Unlike the ELP set released on DVD in 2005 (Beyond the Beginning), the video portion isn't quite as crisp as the DVD set but the audio is sourced from original stereo masters, which sound 1000% better than the mono sounding DVD audio portion.
Go to You Tube and seek out OntarioMotorSpeedway and enjoy. The sound quality of Allen's tapes for every band is really quite something. Check his stuff out........!

"Before there was RUSH....there was Emerson Lake & Palmer..."
The recording date of Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends was Feb of 1974 by Wally Heider Sound for King Biscuit Flower Hour while this new disc is taken from April 6, 1974, much better known as the first California Jam that was also recorded by Wally Heider Sound--except this time it was recorded for ABC-TV. Seems like the recording quality of this second show, also recorded on ELP's landmark Brain Salad Surgery tour as the Feb date, was of much better quality than the former show that was recorded at the Anaheim Convention Center vs the Ontario Motor Speedway for the California Jam.
I highly recommend all reading my words here to Wikipedia the California Jam 1974 and then YouTube OntarioMotorSpeedway and view all of Allen Pamplin's wonderful broad- cast quality versions of the complete day's broadcast.

i've been inside the wally heider mobile sound truck. it ended up in dallas and was at a studio we recorded at. our guitar player ended up getting a job there and recorded quite a few gigs with it. i believe it was used for the recording of the moody blues show at red rocks too. seems like the studio was called omega and was located at love field.

I'm looking forward to this release, for the versions / performance of Still...You Turn Me On, Lucky Man and Karn Evil 9, 1st Impr Part 2 are similar yet different vs Welcome Back My Friends due to adreneline levels since ELP were performing in front of upward of 300k fans.
Anyone out here hear any news on Trilogy & Welcome Back My Friends Deluxe Editions' release dates? ELP1 and Tarkus sound stupendous.

Randy Wine is at the helm on most of Shout! reissues and has done a good job on recordings that are not necessarily "top of the line" so I hope he can work some magic here. It was a great performace so we will see. I'll be getting this as all the Shout! live reissues.
As for the Trilogy and WBMF reissues I had heard 1st qtr next year but that maybe delayed due to issues IP had addressed.

Looks like it's official that it's the Cal Jam show:
Shout! Factory continues its campaign of archival ELP live releases with Live in California, 1974, the first-ever official release of their legendary California Jam (AKA CalJam)performance, which captured the band at its peak, playing for the largest audience in its career. Says Greg Lake, "The band was at the very pinnacle of their performing powers, the event was of biblical proportions and the performance itself was almost flawless." With Keith Emerson on keyboards, Greg Lake on bass and vocals and Carl Palmer on drums, ELP broadened the audience for progressive rock. The band released a series of landmark albums in the 1970s, and several more in the '90s after a 14-year hiatus

Got mine today from Amazon and it sounds pretty good. Sounds like this is the ABC-TV broadcast tapes, possibly obtained by Allen Pamplin who's an online enthusiast of both ELP and the California Jam concert.

Does it sound any different from the recording of this show on 1998's Then And Now?

Oh, yeah. Big time! If you've got a pretty good pair of headphones and can stream from your computer to a receiver or headphone amp, then turn up the volume and go to You Tube and type in OntarioMotorSpeedway / Emerson Lake & Palmer and you'll come upon videos posted by a Mr Allen Pamplin of everything that was broadcast on ABC-TV back in 1974. When you access all of his ELP material you'll hear what's on the new CD. He once told me that someone anonymously gave him original master copies of the ABC-TV tapes, and this new live CD sounds like a copy he might have passed off to Greg Lake for this latest release. And, if you know anything about the first California Jam of 1974 (Cal Jam 2 was in 1978), ABC-TV supposedly didn't save the original source tapes of all of the bands that played on April 6, 1974. Yeah, they simply reused the reel to reel tape and taped over all of the recorded performances once the final broadcast production was spliced together.
(Deep Purple was supposedly the only band that negotiated as part of the deal to play that day master copies of the audio as well as the video of their complete performance, which has been released officially over the years. If only ELP did the same, who was the top act on the bill that day......)
Spend the $10 bucks on Amazon and crank it in your car and enjoy.

I'm confused-a number of the reviews on Amazon have trashed this for sound quality and all of the bad edits from the TV broadcast. This sounds like slightly above bootleg quality and I think I'm staying anyway. Anyone else listen to this yet? stkean2005's review here is a good one, so if anyone else can agree with that I'd still bite.

I have it - I'd say that's a good description. The sound is slightly above boot, but tolerable to me (and I hate most boots). The edits are really choppy in spots though. Still, to me it's worth the $10.

Good assessment by DanO. I have it also and for $10.00 its definitely worth it. One of the best live concerts ELP has ever did. At least we have something of a live document from the show. It just breaks my heart what the video and recording could have been of ABC-TV didn't wipe the tapes.

Yeah, the edits in between a couple songs turned out to be a bit rough but the sound once your out of the transition and into the song is quite good, and the performances are great.
Why, for making an appearance as the top-billed band, ELP didn't negotiate the rights to copies of the master tapes or didn't tap their recorders into the sound board is mind boggling. Almost as foolish as ABC-TV's practice of re- cycling the 2 inch reel to reel tape way back then to save money.
Somehow I smell something fowl with this title though; now that I've purchased several different copies over the years of this legendary performance, an edition taken from a "lost and newly found" master tape is gonna be released. Will love to hear Hoedown, Tarkus/Aquatarkus and the rest of what they left out once this 'lost" tape gets found.
And thanks to those of you that complimented my original review. Very kind of you and, now that you've been listening for a few weeks, has this title's versions of Still...You Turn Me On and Lucky Man really grown on you?
