Bon Iver's Justin Vernon: 'I still hate The Grammys'

Despite winning two awards at this year's ceremony, Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon has explained that he still hates The Grammys.

Speaking to Grizzly Bear's Ed Droste on Twitter – who was angered after being snubbed at yesterday's Grammy nominations – Vernon wrote – via Pitchfork:

Quote:
this is why i hate the grammies. because it allows you to question what you've done. don't question what you’ve done Ed.

He continued at Twitter.com/blobtower: "y'alls music is pure as fuck and there is nobody making music like you and i think it's truly unique. the grammies aren't a measure of much that is calculable or quantifiable by our own contexts for music. why you create is most important."

Droste had been tweeting about his disappointment at not receiving a nomination for Grizzy Bear's most recent album, 'Shields', writing: "So the Grammies are literally based off sales and nothing else?#bummerzone... Super relieved Taylor Swift is up for another award. Was worried she didn't have enough! #phew".

Droste then started tweeting at Vernon, asking what the "Grammy secret!" was. He asked: "Don't know how you managed to infiltrate @blobtower, what's the secret?... or maybe we gotta make better music :/ point is a year ago I was so excited you were nominated, and nobody from "our world" :(".

With six nominations apiece, Mumford and Sons, Jay-Z and Kanye West are among the frontrunners for next year's Grammy Awards.

Frank Ocean and Fun. will also compete in six categories, as will Dan Auerbach, who picks up five nominations with The Black Keys as well as a solo nod for Producer of the Year.

British contenders include Adele, Florence and the Machine, Calvin Harris and Ed Sheeran, while Rihanna picks up a pair of nominations and Skrillex is shortlisted for two prizes: Best Dance Recording and Best Dance/Electronic Album.

Stoked for the Americana category as Mumford & Sons and Lumineers are two of my favorite bands this year.

The Black Keys Toast to Their Grammy Nominations

"I'm hungover, honestly," says Dan Auerbach with a laugh, calling from the U.K. He has reason to celebrate: on Wednesday, the Black Keys scored five Grammy nominations – including Album of the Year and Best Rock Album – plus Auerbach was nominated for Producer of the Year for his work on albums including the Keys' El Camino and Dr. John's Locked Down.

"I'm excited about all of them," he said. "The producer one was a real shock to me. I was just really, really happy for Mac [Dr. John] to to get nominated. I was texting with him last night. He's excited."

Auerbach and Patrick Carney spent the night celebrating on their bus. "I had tequila. Pat was having greyhounds [vodka and grapefruit juice]. We were on the bus so we got pretty, pretty drunk." The party was interrupted when the band got hassled crossing the border from Calle, France into the U.K. "We had to do that thing at customs. We almost didn't get let into the country. We got lucky. They're usually not as forgiving as they were last night. I thought Pat was going to get a cavity search," he said, laughing again.

Auerbach's favorite record of the year he didn't work on? "Man, I really like that Tame Impala record. It's a great record. Cool sounds."

He hasn't been resting much. "I just finished up a few records – a Hanni El Khatib record. I did an album with a group from Africa called Bombino, this guitar player. I did a record with a country girl named Nikki Lane. That's a really good record, too."

He also offered an update on the status of the Keys' next studio album. "Late January is when we're going to record," he said. "We never really rehearse or practice before we get into the studio. We'll just get in there and see what happens. I've been writing every day, but I never know what's going to be a song we use or not, you know."

Justin Bieber's manager in Twitter rant over Grammys snub

Justin Bieber's manager embarked on a Twitter rant after the singer was snubbed from the shortlist for next year's Grammy Awards.

As the Huffington Post reports, the 18-year-old's manager Scooter Braun took to the social networking site to express his disdain after Bieber failed to pick up a single nomination.

"first...congrats to @carlyraejepsenm" he wrote first of all. "Thought u deserved a best new artist nom, but proud Call Me Maybe got u 2 noms. so proud of u." He then went on to claim that Bieber had been unfairly ignored, claiming that the "kid delivered" and that the Grammy board "blew it" by not putting him forward for any awards. So Justin Vernon hates the Grammy's.
Really? Is that the Justin Vernon?

Bieber should have been nominated for Best Children's Album.

Ravi Shankar to receive posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at The Grammys

The late Ravi Shankar is set to receive a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at next year's Grammys ceremony.

Shankar died yesterday (December 11) in San Diego, California, near his home.

The Record Academy President and CEO Neil Portnow said that the three-time Grammy winner had been told before his death that he was to receive the award. Portnow said:

Quote:
Just last week, I had the honour to inform him that he would receive a 2013 Lifetime Achievement this February. He was deeply touched and so pleased, that he extended a gracious and personal invitation to visit with him at his home. We have lost an innovative and exceptional talent and a true ambassador of international music. Our thoughts and sincerest condolences go out to his family, friends and all of those around the world who were inspired by his music and compassionate philanthropy.

Other recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 are singer-songwriter Carole King, the late pianist Glenn Gould, jazz musician Charlie Haden, the late blues musician Lightnin' Hopkins, singer Patti Page and Motown group the Temptations.

An all-time low, IMO, and that's saying something, given what I have thought of the Grammy noms during the past decade or so. If not for Kelly Clarkson, I would own/listen to nothing in any of the major categories. Heck, I only own a few things (by Pink, Muse, Macca and a couple of others) in the minor ones.

At this point according to the Grammys, rock is Muse and the Foo Fighters. And I like both bands. Well at least we can look toward to the alternate country bands that are the most interesting thing at these shows. Loved the Civil Wars performance last year.

Breasts, Buttocks, Genitals Ban At Grammys – But Also Message-Sending Lapel Pins

Isn’t it pointless for CBS Standard And Practice to issue this ‘Wardrobe Advisory’ in advance of the 55th Annual Grammys broadcast this Sunday when nudity is the norm at that awards show? “I assume that my lovely colleagues do not get this same email for the Oscars,” my source texts. “And yes, this is a real email.” But no laughing matter are the last sentences: “The Network requests that any organized cause visibly spelled out on talent’s wardrobe be avoided. This would include lapel pins or any other form of accessory.” Does that include the American Flag, AIDS, breast cancer, and other widely accepted wardrobe embellishments? (Edited):

Subject: 55th GRAMMYS: Standard And Practice Wardrobe Advisory

-kindly confirm receipt of s&p standards-

***GRAMMYS 2013***

CBS Program Practices advises that all talent appearing on camera please adhere to Network policy concerning wardrobe.

Please be sure that buttocks and female breasts are adequately covered. Thong type costumes are problematic. Please avoid exposing bare fleshy under curves of the buttocks and buttock crack. Bare sides or under curvature of the breasts is also problematic. Please avoid sheer see-through clothing that could possibly expose female breast nipples. Please be sure the genital region is adequately covered so that there is no visible “puffy” bare skin exposure. Please avoid commercial identification of actual brand name products on T-shirts. Foreign language on wardrobe will need to be cleared. OBSCENITY OR PARTIALLY SEEN OBSCENITY ON WARDROBE IS UNACCEPTABLE FOR BROADCAST. This as well, pertains to audience members that appear on camera. Finally, The Network requests that any organized cause visibly spelled out on talent’s wardrobe be avoided. This would include lapel pins or any other form of accessory.

Ravi Shankar's posthumous Lifetime Achievement Grammy accepted by daughter Norah Jones

Ravi Shankar's posthumous Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award was accepted by his daughters at a pre-Grammy event in Los Angeles yesterday (February 9).

Anoushka Shankar, a gifted sitar-player herself, and award-winning singer Norah Jones, accepted the award on behalf of their late father at a ceremony at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in California.

Speaking about her father, who passed away on December 11 2012, Nora Jones said: "We know he was very excited to be receiving this award. We really miss him. He lived and breathed music. He was tapping out rhythms on the breakfast table and making me do five over seven…I am still trying to get it. We are very happy to accept the award for him."

Her sister, Anoushka Shankar, added: "It was 60 days ago today that he passed away. It’s kind of difficult to be standing up here, like Norah said, I am thrilled that he knew about this award before he passed away at least. But I wish we weren’t standing up here for him."

Other recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 were singer-songwriter Carole King, the late pianist Glenn Gould, jazz musician Charlie Haden, the late blues musician Lightnin' Hopkins, singer Patti Page and Motown group The Temptations.

Grammys 2013: Jack White Drops F-Bomb During 'Love Interruption' Performance

UPDATED: White appeared to sing "f--- me" during the live show, though CBS claims he actually said "fight me"

Jack White appeared to drop an F-bomb on the Grammys on Sunday night, but CBS claims he didn't.

White sang what sounded like the F-word during his performance of "Love Interruption" with Ruby Amanfu during the show, which aired live from the Staples Center on the East Coast. While the lyrics to their song don't include the words "f--- me," it appeared that White and/or Amanfu added them in during their live performance.

Many Grammy viewers immediately took to social media to note the apparent utterance of the swear word.

But Martin Franks, executive vp planning, policy and government affairs at CBS, insists that the F-word was not sung during White and Amanfu's performance and that the network's editors have listened to the performance multiple times on state-of-the-art equipment to verify that. He says the word that was sung was "fight."

"We had 10 editors, and three people on site, and all are experienced, all with multiple Grammy, multiple Big Brother, multiple Tony experience, experience with doing these delays," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "They went through all of the rehearsals. They have prepared meticulously. And not a single one of them heard anything other than 'fight.'"

CBS executives say they were so confident that it was "fight," they did not edit it for the later broadcast on the West Coast. CBS declined to provide video of the song to include with this story.

Later in the telecast, after Mumford & Sons won album of the year, one of the band members also said the F-word, which was caught by CBS censors. The show airs on a 10-second delay.

Last Sunday, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco dropped the F-bomb on CBS' live coverage of the Super Bowl, which airs without a delay and is not censored. After the Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 34-31 in the Super Bowl, Flacco -- the game's MVP -- exclaimed, "This is f---ing awesome,” on live TV while embracing teammate Marshal Yanda.

While the Parents Television Council blasted CBS for letting the language air uncensored, CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview last week that that's the nature of live events.

"It’s unfortunate, but in the heat of battle sometimes it happens,” he said. “We try to avoid it, but sometimes it happens in live television."

watching on my dvdr...

Is there any other pop star worse than Taylor Swift? "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together".....really? Music for 12 year olds. Surprised the chorus isn't Na Na Na Na. Just awful. Lady we don't care about your stupid love life.

And hearing Elton's voice these days is just painful compared to his hey-day. Man you'd never guess that Ed Sheeran is a pop star taking a look at him. Kinda looks like one of those AI winners.

Fun. shows up and it starts to rain on them. That lead singer sure can caterwaul and looks like Bud from Married With Children. They got 6 Grammy noms and won Best New Artist so that means we will still hear from them in 5 years right?
