THE NAME Eddie Money carries an impressive cache in the world of melodic rock. With a string of successful albums under his arm, together with a one in a million voice, Mr Money has earned a reputation as an artist who can be relied upon to always deliver the goods, starting with this his debut album, originally issued in 1977. Born Eddie Mahoney in Brooklyn in 1949, he joined the New York Police Department on leaving school, primarily to escape being drafted, whilst simultaneously singing for a hard rock band.

Eventually though, he moved out to California and when his band there broke up he was mentored as a solo artist by renowned promoter Bill Graham who organised a record deal with CBS. This debut album was produced by former Doors alumni Bruce Botnick, with able assistance from famed engineers Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin) and Mike Clink (Guns N Roses). It also featured musical support from members of the Steve Miller Band and introduced guitarist Jimmy Lyon, a man who would act as the perfect foil for Eddie s instantly identifiable voice. The album was a major success boasting two massive hits, namely Two Tickets To Paradise and Baby Hold On . Achieving sales in excess of two million units, the album is recognised as one of Eddie s best works.

1. Two Tickets To Paradise
2. You Really Got A Hold On Me

Life For The Taking

Product Description
Special Deluxe Collector s Edition / Fully remastered sound shaped from 24 BIT digital technology / Classic AOR produced by Bruce Botnick (The Doors, Love) and engineered by Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, Free) / 16 page full colour booklet 3,500 word essay, enhanced artwork, rare photos and new interview with Eddie EDDIE MONEY S life was turned upside down by the runaway success of his 1977 debut Eddie Money . The fast-talkin New Yorker had spent the best part of fifteen years chasing his dreams of rock stardom, first in bands on his native east coast, then right across the other side of the country following a move to Berkeley, California back in 68.

Eventually, after being taken under the wing of legendary San Francisco-based promoter Bill Graham in 1976, he achieved the success he deserved. Life For The Taking was his second album and recorded with a clever if it s not broken, don t fix it approach. Sticking to what he knew best, Eddie reconvened the same team who worked on his debut album. The results were equally as magical, Eddie s identifiably gritty voice sitting atop a fine collection of songs that mixed r n b with rock very much in the same style as his previous album. Issued in early 1979, the album consolidated the success of his debut, lodging itself in the top 20 of the US album charts. It also contained material that would provide more introspective lyrical content such You Can t Keep A Good Man Down and the magnificent title track, a brooding epic inspired by his childhood experiences in Brooklyn.

1. Life For The Taking
2. Can t Keep A Good Man Down
3. Nightmare
4. Gimme Some Water
5. Rock And Roll The Place

Playing For Keeps

Image

Product Description
Special Deluxe Collector s Edition / Fully remastered sound shaped from 24 BIT digital technology / Classic AOR produced by Ron Nevison (Heart, Survivor, UFO) / 16 page full colour booklet 3,500 word essay, enhanced artwork, rare photos and new interview with Eddie EDDIE MONEY s first two albums certainly set the scene: panoramic melodic hard rock filled with memorable hooks supporting an instantly identifiable rasp. It was a tailor made sound that perfectly fitted the American airwaves sitting comfortably besides music from the likes of Boston, Foreigner and Journey. A reliable style that served Eddie well and it was masterfully replicated on this, his third, album.

Originally issued in 1980, Playing For Keeps took the original Money format one stage further, upping the stakes by utilising producer in Ron Nevison. Nevison, of course, was the flavour of the time having learnt his craft engineering Led Zeppelin and the Who before embarking on a career guiding some of the world s most successful AOR albums including records from Jefferson Starship, Survivor and Heart. Keeping the basics of his band in place (including super-guitarist Jimmy Lyons) the tracks were augmented by a number of high profile guests, including drummer Carmine Appice. Highlights include Trinidad , Running Back and Let s Be Lovers Again all featuring Money s soulful vocal and high energy delivery. That Eddie Money is one of the best performers of his generation is in no doubt, with Playing For Keeps solidly reinforcing that assertion.

1. Trinidad
2. Running Back
3. The Wish
4. Get A Move On
5. When You Took My Heart
6. Satin Angel
7. Let s Be Lovers Again
8. Nobody Knows

No Control

Image

Product Description
Special Deluxe Collector s Edition / Fully remastered sound shaped from 24 BIT digital technology / Classic AOR produced by Tom Dowd (Rod Stewart, Derek & The Dominoes) / Contains the hits singles Think I m In Love & Shakin / 16 page booklet, 3,500 word essay, enhanced artwork, rare photos and new interview with Eddie LOOKING TO consolidate his success even further, Eddie Money carefully took stock of the situation. His first two albums had been huge critical and commercial successes but his third album Playing For Keeps , despite its artistic quality, failed to match the all impressive sales of the former.

It was also a particularly challenging time health wise for Eddie suffering from Sciatica (a debilitating nerve disorder) he was forced to record No Control severely handicapped and in considerable pain. Switching to work with a new producer, the revered Tom Dowd (Derek & The Dominoes, Rod Stewart etc), No Control brought Eddie s music back into focus giving it the spit and polish required to elevate the contents to classic status. Above all else, it was the quality of the songs that gave the record a golden hue and the raw yet polished production made it shoe-in for saturation play on FM radio. Chief amongst the best tracks were the two hit singles Think I m In Love and Shakin , but there were deeper songs to explore such as the John Bellushi tribute Passing By The Graveyard (Song For John B) . With the continued presence of guitar foil Jimmy Lyons, No Control shot Eddie back into the spotlight notching up sales in excess of three million and re-establishing him as one of the era s most prolific stars.

1. Shakin
2. Runnin Away
3. Think I m In Love
4. Hard Life
5. No Control
6. Take A Little Bit
7. Keep My Motor Runnin

Wow..."Playing For Keeps" has been out of print for a very long time. (I have mine though! :) ) It's nice to see it get reissued.

There were a few promo-only live tracks and 12" mixes that could be used as bonus material.

On the subject of Eddie Money, I recently purchased but have not yet received a title called "Eddie Money - An Acoustic Christmas Live (2-CDs)". I can't seem to find any history on it so I have no idea what it is and what it contains. Does anyone know anything about it?

I'd love to see the Americathon version of "Get A Move On" be a bonus track on this Playing For Keeps remaster.

I will say this-Rock Candy are one of the best if not the best at doing remasters in terms of sound quality, packaging, presentation-it's all so first class and they spend time and money.

But bonus tracks aren't always on their releases. If available, they consider it but $ plays a factor. I'd think for most fans just having these from such a stellar label would be very special, but I agree with Kym that would be a sweet bonus cut. It was also on Columbia so that shouldn't be a problem.

I really like No Control by the way-my fave album by him.

Thank you...that's more info than I had. I still know nothing like tracks, etc. Oh well, it was only $5.00 where I got it.

Totally agree with IP here. I have many of their releaes and they have all have been first rate.

I am on their mailing list and usually they put new releases on sale AND have free shipping. Therefore I expect they will have a package of all three with the sale price which of course which I will order.

The single mix of 'Two Tickets to Paradise' would be a great addition to the first album.

Where is the cheapest place to purchase Rock Candy titles? Amazwan sure wasn't impressive price-wise on the Buck Dharma title that I was looking at, but when I tried to go to the Rock Candy website, my virus protection went nuts on me warning of trojans and such. Any thoughts?

OK:
The best sources I have found are their own website as Rick mentions w/ free shipping but UK prices, or go to their ebay store (you might have to look up one of their CDs for sale or if there's a search for stores just enter Rock Candy Records) -they start their prices anywhere from $13-$19 and have free shipping!

They put stuff for sale literally every few days although sometimes there's a day or two where they don't list anything.

You just have to keep an eye on things but you can get them even cheaper than ordering from them that way. Also, AmazonUK's prices for them are OK but a little more usually. If you wait until the US release date you can check the used prices at Amazon.com in the US and places like Import CDs and others we all use have them at reasonable and sometimes even cheaper prices.

Hope that helps!

FINALLY! Can you think of another Columbia artist whose catalog is still in such disarray? (I'm sure you probably could, but you know what I mean.) Eddie's first 3 albums are pure gold, and "The MTV Album" is strong as well. I really want Rock Candy to reissue of the fifth LP (Where's The Party?). Sony used the video mixes for their CD (just like Capitol did with 1985's "HEART"), so the original LP version has never been on CD. Eddie's first seven LP's are uniformly good and all deserve recognition.

Very encouraging to read this. :)

I have yet to take the plunge on any of their releases but many, many tempt me.
With so many re-issue labels offering suspect sound quality it's nice to hear they make the effort.

I just did DanO. They (RockCandy) had a special sale if you bought all 4 (which I did). How can one not?

And added the Blackfoot title because of IP review, Thanks my friend. :ohyes:
