Generally speaking, of course:

  1. Music
  2. Books
  3. Movies
  4. Comics
  5. TV
  6. Games

I play Angry Birds a lot, but not sure if that counts...

Sports is covered by TV, I think.

Sabermetrics have made sports (baseball at least) safe for nerds.

No way. Sports is not a nerd interest.

There wouldn't be anything wrong with it being one, but at some point, the phrase "nerd interest" would start to mean "interest."

That goes for Hank and his "biking."

Should I include backpacking? Woodworking? Guns?

I agree with Jay. The only thing sporting related that I'd consider a nerd interest would be Fantasy leagues (and card collecting, I guess).

And, as Jimbo notes, saber metrics. Very, very nerdy stuff.

Fantasy Leagues are not nerdy.

It's essentially D&D for sports, without the direct roleplaying aspect.

Books outranking movies is a recent development, mostly due to economic factors.

The Dark Knight Rises is essentially "Batman in the movies," but that doesn't make The Dark Knight Rises nerdy. When something is mainstream, cuts across a wide swath of the culture without much discernible pattern of nerdiness, it's not nerdy. It doesn't matter if, under Cosmic Justice, it "ought" to be considered nerdy.

Fantasy Sports are played by jocks and fratboys, businessmen and more and more women. I've been a couples Fantasy league since 2005. I've been in several related to workplace.

"Nerd" has an funky, amorphous, imprecise meaning. I grant that. And I embrace my own nerd-dom. But we can't turn something that fratboys, jocks, and rednecks do into something "nerdy" by doing a logical proof.

Can we make raise a philosophical point about "what is nerdiness?" About "isn't nerd something dictated unfairly by some predominant social strata?" Should we use the word "strata" more in everyday conversation? I say "yes" to all these questions, with gusto.
