Yo!
I'm wondering if there would be any interest amongst the artistic-types around here if we started a little art contest thingie over on the Drawing Board.
Perhaps I could come up with a little one or two-page storyline (nothing too complex or long)...maybe even something people could vote on?
We could even keep it pro-free (including pro colourists ), just something fun...I'd like to hear feedback on that.
I'm kinda thinking, story-wise, about not choosing which characters people would have to draw - you know, making it something like
Panel 1 - Super-villian threatens people
Panel 2 - Super-hero shows up
Panel 3 - slow dancing ensues
Something like that...this way, people could draw the characters they like the most.
Any thoughts?

Sounds good. I would have everyone start from a similar premise but leave the ending more open so we can get surprised.
A board I was on once did a jam thing that was fun -- one guy draws the first page, the next guy does the next one, etc. The last guy has to finish it.
And AFAIC everyWAN should have a chance to play, pro or no.

Also: I think it should be an exhibition, not a competition. Remember: no wagering.

I think start with a page, a page that features no recognizable characters, and then folks can fill in X number of pages after that.

Yeah...I couldn't really think of what a good prize would be...
I definitely want it to be rant-free, though - nobody gets called out on not following the rules!.
More guidelines than rules.

You know...that gives me an idea...
Maybe something along the lines of
Page 1 - two people walking down the street, holding comic books, obviously having an animated conversation about them (characters, plots, creators, whatever)...
Page 2 - two of the characters in the comic books they were talking about appear around a corner, battling it out.
Page 3 - slow dancing ensues.
Something like this...yeah, I'll have to think about this a bit more...

I think their should be a set number of pages though.
Half the fun is getting it to fit within the guidelines.

Sounds good.
How about four or five pages, two or three sounds very short to me.

How about you give a one-page premise then ask everyone to wrap it up in 3-5 pages?

I am a brilliant sequential artist. I make Will Eisner look like a chump. I can bench press 350 pounds.

Read "can bench press" as "weigh."

I am a weakling.
Do we have to have a lower limit for pages? I would love to join in but to be honest I might not have time to stretch even to a three page story?

hmmm........
Maybe we could start with something a touch simpler...
Perhaps do a simple costume design thing, just to get everybody warmed up.
You know, take an existing character, and redesign their costume any way you like. The more obscure the character, the better. You'd have to post a scan or something of how they originally looked, then your redesign.
Colour, black n' white, whatever.
This might get people more interested in the sequential storyline...and, yeah, I'm kinda leaning to a 3 or so page idea - that way, Jo and others who don't have the time or inclination to do a longer story can still get involved, while those who really get into it (and maybe wanna indulge in at least one splash page) can go longer. (and, if they can squeeze it into two pages, I'd say go for it)
The redesign wouldn't have to make the character better or sexier or any particular set of criteria...just something different. Dark n' Gritty, Silly n' Goofy, whatever.
Let's get some feedback on this idea
