This is entirely not political. It's about flags. If you talk politics, it will be locked. If you talk flags, well, I guess you're Sheldon Cooper. Anyway, when discussing a recent event that might prompt a change in the American flag, I found this little algorithm for adding stars to the stars and stripes. Check it out:

The N States of America

Pretty cool, and I had never considered that there would be N values for which there were no valid patterns. Guess we better never merge states down to 29, or split/add up to 69 or 87. At 68 and 86 we'll just have to add 2 more states. Should I have spoiler-ed that?

I would have thought it would have used the actual patterns that were in place historically, as in when we had the 13 colonies and a circular pattern.

There apparently was a 29 state flag. It just doesn't fit any of the patterns in the algorithm.

The WAN States of America:

I remember 48-star flags.

Not that I remember when there weren't 50 states...but our city hall had some of the old 48-star flags when I was a lad.

I love that algorithm. Really cool.

A long time ago, after watching that one Gibson movie, The Patriot, I was reminded how cool the original 13 star flag looked, with the ring of 13 stars. So, I designed a new one, basically just having 2 rings an inner and outer, I think it was 20 stars on the inner ring and 30 on the outer. I even submitted it to the White House. Shockingly, they never got back to me. I liked it though.

I'd like to see your flag design.

Anyone recall Farrah Fawcett on Letterman claiming there were 52 states? Good old Dave did his best to gloss it over.
