I ordered this last night, along with "Understanding America" and "Mothermania".

Curious to see how this Road Tapes series goes.

Pr-ordered with same day delivery - these are the Mothers that were my idols

Got Understanding America today - Porn Wars Deluxe is the only "new" material.

All other cuts are existing mixes with some of the music edited out.

Mothermania was bumped to mid-November.

Waiting to hear about Roxy update.

Got a notice that Mothermania shipped, but not the other two. And I thought I saw that there were a few unique mixes on UA - maybe the bits of music that were dropped. Either way - won't be the worst way I've ever spent $20.

PWD is worth the price itself. Interesting listen.

It is an interesting comp - as you said - worth 20 bucks.

a note from Gail Zappa - hey what did she say?

Dear People of Earth (and especially everyone over 18 and a citizen of the United States),

Here's some stuff we just have to share:

1. Happy Halloween!

2. Please vote!

3. We are so pleased to announce Frank Zappa's UNDERSTANDING AMERICA. Cook some up for your Constitution.

4. We're also delighted that Road Tapes, Venue #1 starts shipping within the week. We are pleased here at UMRK & Vaulternative Records to announce this new series of audio entertainments. Among these are the more primitive audio documentary attempts to capture the essence of what was highly and improbably and even impossibly out there on the road in some of the worst audio terrain imaginable. We'll put you there! Come with us.

5. From Now Until The End of the Year:

October:
The era when Francesco Zappa clashed with the Duke of York compares not to Frank Zappa meeting the Mothers of Prevention. Francesco had a patron at least, with privilege. FZ took a M.O.P. to clear the Congressional Halls of the censorship of music and lyrics. The question he asked everyone to consider was always Does Humor Belong In Music? You can laugh at Jazz From Hell but armed only with a Guitar, FZ proved You Can't Do That Onstage Anymore, whether in Helsinki or on Broadway, The Hard Way was not the only way to get The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life to Make a Jazz Noise Here. So even if you must insist on Mothermania that was only the beginning and only a small part of the experience of Understanding America.

November/December:
You know You Can't Do That Onstage Anymore, volumes of times but what you can do at your next picnic with your friendly Playground Psychotics - always soooo Ahead Of Their Time that is almost annoying - is treat yourself to a large orchestral snack of The Yellow Shark. Whenever the question is Have I Offended Someone? you won't need an ocean of Läther to find that Mystery Disc. You will know the answer in all the Lost Episodes and in each, every and all the Finer Moments.

6. Watch the skies. For the Full Moon. For New Announcements coming soon!

7. Don't forget to Vote!

8. Here's wishing everyone confronting Sandy warm, dry and healthy days ahead.

9. ZPZ's out there soon. Try and catch them if you can!

xxx,

the barfies

OK - please get yer d-coder out - what the F does she mean by the Finer Moments - Is it a new release or a book on the Stooges Larry Fine?

So they're doing Lather now?

If "Finer Moments" is the title of something, it's probably an "entry-level" compilation, a replacement for Strictly Commercial.

Still disappointed at the lack of Rage/Fury.

Last year in England Gail did promise 2012. Maybe later this month we will get an update. There is a copy circulating between traders but I am sure - based on the recent activity we will be hearing something soon.

I have big hopes in these Road Tapes as this is the kind of Zappa material I mostly listen to.

Someday maybe they will uncover the material that made up the original 12 record set The History and Collected Inprovasations of FZ and the MOI.

If we live long enough perhaps we will see everything come out.

The Mothers playing a complete Edgard Varese composition!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The whole tracklist looks great. Even if the sound quality blows, I'm glad I bought it.

Mine has shipped. I'm anxious to hear it. I was talking about it last night with Mike Keneally, who played in FZ's 1988 band and was vaultmeister for a period. He hadn't heard it, so we didn't get to talk about sound quality, but I'm looking forward to it.

My copy arrived today. I only had a chance to listen to a few minutes, but...the sound quality is really good. No - it's excellent, especially considering it's a recording from 1968. I'm very pleased with the sound.

IMO best Zappa release since Imaginary Diseases. I hope there are a lot more like this. These be the Mothers I grew up listening to.

IMO one of FZ's 20 best releases.

Much more music than singing - but I like it that way

1. Importance of an Earnest Attempt - is mostly intro/tuning
2/3 Help I'm A Rock/Transylvania Boogie - great medley - TB is one of his most under=rated tunes
4 Flopmash Musics - inprovization
5 - Hungry Freaks Daddy - live version much the same as the YCDTOSA version
6. Orange Country Lumber Truck - really large medley - of Let's Make the Water Turn Black/Harry Your A Beast/Oh No/ Orange Country Lumber Truck - one of the highlights of this release.
7. Rewards of a Career in Music - Bunk Gardner recalls his early music lessons -
8. Trouble Every Day - due to a tape change - a large portion is missing - they did the best they could - added a slamming door to cover the edit - even though 2-3 minutes are missing - better to have this than not have it.
9. Holiday In Berlin Full Blown - another great medley from this era
10. A Pound For A Brown - short version of this tune that FZ played throughout the rest of his career - not a lot of soloing here but a great great tune.
11. Sleeping In A Jar - instrumental version of this Uncle Meat tune - another under-rated gem.
12. - Oh In the Sky - At last this 50-ish Roy Estrada falsetto tune - glad it got released officially at last.

13. encore 1 Octandre - great version of this Varese tune.

14. encore 2 - King Kong - another great instrumental that FZ would play thru-out the rest of his career - some great soloing.

All in all - nearly 90 minutes of vintage Mothers that we never expected. There are some rough spots but overall this is a GREAT release. I hope there are many more from this series.

Liner notes are a little lacking. Packaging is in hard plastic case. This is release # 92.

I agree that this is a great release! I'll probably never listen to the monologues or improvs again, but that leaves 75 minutes of classic Mothers. The Orange County Medley is my favorite-- wonderful to compare to the snippet on YCDTOSA 1 and Ahead Of Their Time. But frankly, all of the music is inspired. What a surprise! How did this sit around for 45 years without coming out??? Hope they keep 'em comin' on a regular basis.

Jeff

Gotta echo everyone else here so far..............what a great CD. Very good enough sound and a nice performance. The OCLT medley, HIBFB, and Octandre are my favorite parts.

Looking foeward to the next one, and hope it lasts a long time.

This is the vault release of the year......along with the Kinks BBC box set

I agree with Charles - This is the vault release of the year......along with the Kinks BBC box set...and at my age most of my "new" music is vault music.

I feel the same way......when I buy a new album, it's pretty much an older artist.....Ray, Dylan, Neil Young etc.

Forgot to mention last night......the loud "snork" noises at the end of OCLT freaked my cat out

I just wrote the following in the What are You Listening too thread,

"Zappa Road Tapes 1 D1. I'm liking this much more than I expected to. I was under the notion that 1968 MOI was all about bad Beavis & Butt-head humor."

I love this lineup - the basic band from when I first discovered FZ...the Roxy band comes close but these guys were people - funny - weird - pretty good musicians...
