Disney announce plans to make 'Star Wars Episode 7'

Disney have revealed that they plan to make a seventh film in the Star Wars franchise.

The entertainment titans are to buy George Lucas' Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion (£2.5 billion) and will release the new movie in 2015, following it up with Episode 8 and Episode 9, with the films released every two to three years.

Lucas, who retired from the movies earlier in 2012, said in a statement – via Digital Spy:

"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers."

He continued: "I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I'm confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy [the new president of Lucasfilm], and having a new home within the Disney organisation, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come."

He added that Disney would also make sure that Lucasfilm and Star Wars not only continued to make their mark in film and television, but in "interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment and consumer products."

It's going to suck. If it even happens.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. It's a lot easier and more profitable to retread old ground with a cash cow that has a built-in fan base than it is to come up with something new and iconic that resonates with fans (consumers). It's all about the merchandise and extending the earnings from the brand. I'm surprised it took this long.

Why do I have a feeling that Marvel (owned by Disney) will now start publishing Star Wars comics again? George must have REALLY needed the money.

Either that, or he's got so much money he just wants to retire.

He'll be like Roddenberry was to Star Trek, a "consultant."

The plus side is that the movies will be made with minimal Lucas involvement.

The down side is that Mark Hamill is too old to play Luke Skywalker.

Not if Luke is the new Ben he's not.

It's what they feared most... Gay Day at Disney World just got gayer.

This will be a day long remembered. It has seen the destruction of childhoods, and will soon see the destruction of traditional heterosexual marriage.

On the bright side, the scripts, acting and directing can only get better.....

I wouldn't mind some Star Wars sequels featuring wrinkly old Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo. And a big gray Chewbacca. Mostly being crotchety and annoyed at those young whippersnapper Jedi who are, of course, going to screw up the whole galaxy. Get off of my yard with that damn light saber! Buzz, buzz, Zap! all frigging night long. Rotten kids.

Yep. I'd like to see the old characters, but see them hand the reigns over to some new characters in the first movie.
Maybe some young kids can join with Queen Leia to save Luke from the Darkside.

It's exactly what happened with the Muppets: once Disney acquired Marvel, they moved the Muppet comics from Boom to Marvel, despite the Boom comics being incredibly well received.

Dark Horse has been a very good steward of Star Wars -- the 50-issue Knights of the Old Republic is a high water-mark -- and I hate that it's almost certain that that's now ending. We've already seen solicitations for a new ongoing simply titled Star Wars, to debut in January and feature the original gang of Rebels just after the Battle of Yavin, but now it seems we're going back to the past in an entirely different manner, as Marvel was the first to publish Star Wars comics way back in the late 70's.

I wonder, will the Clone Wars cartoon also wrap up sooner rather than later, considering its affiliation with Warner Bros. via Cartoon Network?

The inevitable end of Dark Horse SW comics is bad for us older fans, and the possible end of the Clone Wars cartoon probably stinks for the kiddies, but there's a very good silver lining:

Disney's an arguably better steward of its properties, so this may result in an approach to home video that is much, much more respectful of the original versions of the films, pre-Special Edition.

Yeah, I can see Disney listening to the fans and making nice Blu-Rays of the original, untouched trilogy, maybe cleaned up a bit and put into 7.1 sound but that's all.

And finally releasing Star Wars: Holiday Special.

Not that that's a good thing, but unless Lucas specifically put in the sale contract that they could not do that I believe they will likely do that.
