Quote:
According to MusicTAP, Mercury Records will reissue a Super Deluxe CD/BD version of RUSH's classic 1976 album "2112" on December 18. The set is expected to contain a 5.1 version of the album.

"2112" was included in the "Sector 1" box set release last year, but no 5.1 edition of the album was made available.

A unique blend of classic rock and synthesizers that made RUSH a sensation both in Canada and the United States, "2112" is one of two RUSH albums listed in "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" (the other being "Moving Pictures"). In 2006, a poll of Planet Rock listeners picked "2112" as the definitive RUSH album. In 2012, the album came in at No. 2 on Rolling Stone's list for "Your Favorite Prog Rock Albums of All Time," as voted for in a reader's poll, being one of three RUSH albums included on the list (the others being "Moving Pictures" and "Hemispheres").

I still don't have a Blu-Ray player, but I love surround sound music (when it's done well). My other concern is that Rush surround sound mixes tend to be decent but not great. That includes all of their live DVDs and the handful of original albums that were remixed for 5.1. Whoever does those mixes doesn't have the same grasp on what to do with that format as Steven Wilson, but who does?

Yes, and unfortunately, he's only one man.

I suspect part of the reason he begged off on the rest of the ELP catalog was that he just didn't have the time to remix them.

I was told by someone at Sanctuary/UMe that's not what it was.

Hey IP,

Are you allowed to say? If not I understand. I know he really likes ELP so it isn't the tunes. I also read that some of the reviews were negative. Sad, to see that. But in my case, I enjoy the discs. Nice addition to the other versions that I have.

Anyway, Great for the Rush 2112 5.1. This is a no brainer for my collection, Blu-Ray or not.

Rick:
I can say a little bit. It was a combo of some negative reviews and him feeling his work wasn't appreciated, plus some of the somewhat negative things he said about certain ELP songs/albums. The guy told me they're looking for someone else, but he held out small hope Steven may continue. There's a bit more I shouldn't say (nothing secret) including what he described as a farce involving "Unknown Ballad".
He did say the plans are for Trilogy, Brain Salad and Welcome Back next year.

If nothing else, Steven Wilson should work solely on surround sound mixes, and they can leave CD remixes to someone else. As I stated above, no one I've heard understands what to do with the surround sound spectrum as well as Mr. Wilson. So many 5.1 mixes just split various sounds into each channel, but he creates a unique mix/blend that retains the greatness of the original recordings while showcasing elements that may have been buried or omitted from the original stereo versions. In other words, when you listen to a Steven Wilson 5.1 mix, you're literally surrounded by the music.

I've said this before; I just hope SW's replacement doesn't follow the pre SW ELP bright reissue trend

Mr Wilson is also the only person I've heard who can make the usually bright MLP (SUPPOSEDLY LOSSLESS, my ears tell me differently) sound tolerable in any format (including 2.0).

Like the other Rush surround releases to date - Moving Pictures, A Farewell To Kings, Fly By Night, and Signals - 2112 has been remixed at a 96 khz 24 bit high resolution from the original multitrack masters in a 're-creation' direction taking advantage of the 3-dimensional soundscape of surround, rather than a complete re-interpretation of the mix. I have had quite a few questions about the technical side of the process so time depending, I'll try to get an article put together about it and get it posted here or published.

“Every album is a point in Rush’s history,” Geddy Lee said in 1978. “And if it’s not getting better, something’s wrong. Every album has to be the perfect Rush album.”

“The first record,” Alex Lifeson says about “2112,” “where we sounded like Rush.”

Originally released in 1976, Rush’s epic, landmark release “2112” was their creative and commercial breakthrough as well as one of the band’s most highly regarded releases among both fans and critics alike.

With lyrics written by Neil Peart, and influenced by author Ayn Rand, “2112” kicks off with the ambitious seven-suite title track (side one), set in a futuristic world run by the “Priests of the Temples of Syrinx” who regulate “every single facet of every life,” which includes books, music, work and play. “2112” conveys the story of humanity’s instinctual, inner need for one’s free will.

After the mythological journey through “2112,” side two brings you back to the present and continues with five stand-alone tracks. From hard-rocking tracks such as “A Passage to Bangkok,” “Lessons,” and a trip to into the fourth dimension with “The Twilight Zone,” to the album’s soaring conclusion, “Something For Nothing,” “2112” is the album that ushered in the next stage in their continuing evolution as artists.

Rush are currently touring North America in support of their 20th studio album, “Clockwork Angels.”

Lackluster bonus to say the least. 3 live tracks and they're not even from the 2112 tour?
They really should've included the 1976 show from Passaic, NJ that is out there pro-shot in B&W. They included one song from that on the Time Machine 2011 DVD. It's from that tour and while I have it, I can't understand not including that even if it's far from pristine.

Did Hugh Syme have a recent head injury? That's the only explanation for such an atrocious design.
