Here's the studio version of "Power"... the band played this and "Lucky Man" on select dates during their recent U.S. tour.

Not a bad song at all, but kinda repetitive and mellow. Still, it's the first song of theirs I've liked since a few on Marbles in 2004.
I'd imagine this could be a good live number to build a mood.

IMO, it was actually better live... the studio version kind of smoothes it out.

Marillion will release their 17th studio album, Sounds That Can't Be Made, on September 24, 2012.

Produced by Marillion and Michael Hunter, the collection has been two years in the making, recorded at Marillion's home studio, the Racket Club, as well as Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios.

On Sounds That Can't Be Made, frontman Steve Hogarth admits "More than a singer, I feel like an interpreter expressing a journey." Listeners will indeed take a lyrical journey, from Hogarth's open-diary prose for "Montreal," to the long-lost 1992 John Helmer lyric to "Pour My Love," as well as "Gaza," the record's 17-minute epic centerpiece.

U.S. audiences recently got their first taste of Marillion's new sounds with the live debut of "Lucky Man" and "Power" on their 2012 North American Summer Tour. The long awaited appearance marked the band's first stateside gigs since the 2004 Marbles Tour.

Following the upcoming European leg of the Sounds That Can't Be Made tour, Marillion embark on their traditional, bi-annual Marillion Convention, scheduled for March 8-10, 2013 in Port Zelande, Holland. The three day event, attended by several thousand fans from all corners of the globe, allows fans to experience unique Marillion sets nightly, become immersed in Marillion culture and history with a Marillion Museum, a Marillion Pub Quiz, a charity 10K run and Signing Sessions, and even an opportunity to have tea and biscuits with a band member. Similar events are also planned for March 22-24 in Montreal, Canada and April 12-14 in Wolverhampton, UK. For more information: http://www.marillionweekend.com

Devoted Marillion fans began the pre-order campaign for Sounds That Can't Be Made earlier this year, uniquely allowing the band to independently write and record without label pressures. The over 12,000 fans and supporters willing to purchase the set in advance will be rewarded with a Special Edition of Sounds That Can't Be Made, with deluxe packaging and a bonus DVD including live tracks, over 2 hours of interviews and studio footage.

Tracklisting:
Gaza
Sounds That Can't Be Made
Pour My Love
Power
Montreal
Invisible Ink
Lucky Man
The Sky Above The Rain

Although I've given up on these guys years ago, does anyone have any thoughts on this album? I can't go by the fanboys/obsessives on Amazon-I'd rather hear the real comments here.

Somewhere in the 244 page "What Are You Listening To Right Now" thread I made some comments. I can't find the post at the moment. My memory is the album starts weak, & improves as it goes on. I'm pretty sure I first wrote that it sucked, & than added that I liked the 2nd half. One song I found particularly good was The Sky Above The Rain.

There is also a 2 cd live edition I haven't played yet.

Next time I play it (them) I'll try to post more.

Pete, I just played cd 2 of the live version. Knowing your feelings about recentish Marillion, I suspect it could go either way; if I had to make a guess it would be that it's not one of your favorites (of course having said that you'll love it!) (-:

Thanks Geff:
I think I may get the single-CD version and see what I think. I kinda liked the 2 songs I heard-at least enough. Some of it reminded me of Marbles which had some good things on it. Everything before from 1998-on up and after has been downright atrocious IMO, but I may get this. Then again, I may not! But at least I'm considering it.

I find it to be a bit same-sounding, densely produced and aurally impenetrable. I turned it off about half way through yesterday.

I'm a huge Marillion fan, with my favorite Hogarth-era albums being Season's End, Brave, Afraid of Sunlight, This Strange Engine and Marbles. Sorry Pete, but I can't agree with your assessment of the post-1998 output (except Marbles) being "atrocious," but they do fall victim to being a bit repetitive at times. Their best albums are the ones with lots of dynamics, both musically & lyrically, and...most importantly...memorable songs. Their least satisfying albums (like Somewhere Else) are still enjoyable, though, because Hogarth's voice is always great to hear and Rothery always delivers some beautiful & tasteful guitar playing.

I've listened to the new album 3 times, and it's definitely not among my favorites. Usually by the 3rd listen there are songs I'm singing along to, but that's not the case with this one. Rothery does sound particularly inspired throughout the album, though, and I definitely like it more than Somewhere Else and Happiness Is The Road. I will always hold out hope that they have another Marbles in them. Hard to believe that one's almost 9 years old.

Rich:
I put so much money into these guys over the years-they owe me! This is all my opinon of course as a huge fan, but Radiation, Marillion.com, Anoraknophobia, Somewhere Else-the Happiness albums-I think it's all crap and chasing modern trends. Radiation and Marillion.com are putrid to me. Just awful. Like they wanted to be the next Radiohead or something.
Marbles was OK-I'd hardly call it brilliant, but it was at least something I could listen to (although I haven't in about 6 or 7 years), but what I've heard of this one so far is another snoozefest (I listened to some of it last night).
I'll pass again-never thought I'd say that when these guys could do no wrong for me in High School and College. Even Rothery's guitar playing bores me now-it's always the same. Hogarth is as pretentious as they come-Ice Cream Genius my ass!
At least I tried with this one, but it's another miss for me.

It's funny...I sort of feel the same way that you do, except I don't hate any of those albums. I go back to them from time to time and always enjoy a handful of songs, and even the lesser songs don't suck. The albums just aren't as consistently brilliant as some of the early ones. I definitely don't get the same excitement about a new Marillion album as I used to, and I've even stopped buying the pre-release versions from their websites. I'm more than happy to wait for the less expensive retail releases. The 2-disc version of Marbles is a monster in my opinion, and "Don't Hurt Yourself" is one of their greatest melodic rock songs. I never had an issue with them trying to be the next Radiohead, since they weren't going anywhere as a prog band in the mid-90s. I also don't see Hogarth as pretentious. I would consider him "artistic." I guess it's all semantics. It's his voice I love, and it's still one of my favorites even when the songs he's singing aren't that great.

All that being said, I won't try to convince you that any of their recent albums will grow on you, since I don't think they will. But since you were a fan, you shouldn't give up hope that they will one day deliver another amazing album.

My thoughts are pretty similar to Rich's on this one. The only one I absolutely hate is Tales From The Engine Room.
