Monkee Micky Dolenz Drops Song From Upcoming Album (Listen!)

Randy Scouse Git First Song He Wrote That Charted in 1967

By TheImproper, September 20th, 2012

Monkees singer Micky Dolenz has dropped a track from his upcoming album Remember. Titled “Randy Scouse Git,” it’s the first song he ever wrote that made it onto the charts in 1967. Bandmate Peter Tork calls it one of his favorite Monkees songs

Dolenz, 67, wrote the song after a party the Beatles threw for Monkees band members, which also included lead singer Davy Jones and guitarist Michael Nesmith.

The song was also featured on “The Monkees” tv show and was originally a track on the band’s album Headquarters.

The title was somewhat controversial for its time because it literally translated “horny kid from Liverpool.” It was re-titled when it was released in Great Britain.

The lyrics include references to the Beatles and their record label as “the four kings of EMI,” and other popular artists at the time, including Cass Elliot of the Mamas and Papas and Dolenz’s future wife, “Top of the Pops” emcee Samantha Juste. They married in 1968 and divorced in 1975 after having one child.

The album features songs that Dolenz says had an influence on his life. Many of the songs have new arrangements and were written by The Beatles, Carole King, Harry Nilsson and Neil Diamond among others.

The album will be released Sept. 25. Check out the track above and click here to follow TheImproper on Twitter for more music updates.

What was that about artists jumping the shark when they release an album of standards?

What's even worse is that he's covering himself!

Nothing intrinsically wrong with that. Gives us a chance to see how the performer's style has changed in the intervening years.

Nothing wrong with it per se, but I'd rather see him doing covers of other artists' songs. And yes, I know he's doing that, but I don't see the need for a lounge lizard version of "Randy Scouse Git."

And the whole "veteran artists doing cover songs" thing has gotten tiresome.

But that's just my two cents. Your mileage may vary.

I'm most intrigued by how he would now do Sometime In The Morning and Do Not Ask For Love.

During my usual Wednesday trek to J&R today, I just happened to stumble upon Micky signing copies of his new CD! There was hardly anybody there, so I grabbed a copy and got on line. Told him I'd be at the Beacon on Dec. 2nd, he replied "what about this Friday at B.B. King's?"

This was a really big deal for me.
