Looks like just a re-release with better cover art of "Hits" which was a shockingly good comp considering how very different all 3 phases of this band were (the third one making we wretch-but that's just me).

Love to throw on Hits once in awhile.

You know IP, I am looking at track selection and I am saying "I already have this". Sure enough. Exact track selection and all. Now if Vic A. was to remaster it I would trade up but I do not see this happening. Rick A.

The ONLY reason I could see for buying this (if it was around $2.00) would be to have Jane & We Built This City. I already own the entire JA catalog + Dragon Fly (imo the only album from the pre 90's JS worth owning).

Still love their "Miracles" after all these years. I could hear it every day and be happy.

That album title is far too long and sounds like a joke.
And I don't think that the "Starship" stuff should be included, personally.
But then again, what do I know?

But then again, what do I know? You know that the Starship material is horrendous! And so do I! I still cringe every time I hear "Sara", "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" and especially "We Built This City". How do you get from "White Rabbit" to that? A shitload of drugs and ghastly decisions.

One day, if I ever meet Bernie Taupin, I'm going to say to him, "Mr. Taupin, I love your work with Elton John...but you have to answer for 'We Built This City.'"

IMO, after Dragon Fly they were a totally different band, despite Kantner, Slick & Balin sticking around for awhile. I saw the Red octopus tour & it was AWFUL. At least DF was a good record & PK hadn't lost his songwriting touch yet; though it sounds very little like JA either. While I own them all, I'm also not real impressed with the various Kantner & Kantner/Slick solo albums from the late JA / early JS period.

I've never understood the over-the-top reaction to "We Built This City." Catchy 80s pop, it you ask me. (Jefferson) Starship became a solid singles act in the 80s and early 90s. "Stranger" rocks like crazy. Dragonfly was huge with my high-school posse. Spitfire (1976) is an underrated album, a college dorm fave of mine.

Probably the biggest reason I'm mildly fond of WBTC is because I played it in a top 40 band.

I think "We Built This City" deserves every bit of hell it catches. My favorite lyric is "Knee deep in the hoopla" which was so special they named the album that! Horrific IMO. Now, Jefferson Starship was good-quality AOR-Rock along the lines of Journey, Foreigner, Boston from the late 70s to early 80s or so. Songs like "Save Your Love", "Stranger", "Jane", "Light The Sky On Fire"-all really good guitar driven (Craig Chaquico [sp?] was a demon on guitar), hook-filled Rock radio songs. Starship was Starshit.

IP, have to disagree with you at least when it comes to Journey. I consider them to have been a great band in their peak. Don't feel that way about the other 3.

I didn't say any of those bands were bad. I like them all. My favorite Journey was the Jazz Fusion stuff but I love the other stuff (except for when Perry turned them into his solo band) and the 2 Augeri albums which were not good.

Even though Starship material doesn't compete with previous incarnations in my book I must admit I am a sucker for Mickey Thomas.

No, my point is I think Journey was a much better band than Starship. For what they were (commercial arena top 40), I hold the classic Steve Perry lineup in very high regard.

This release should be "The Essential Jefferson Starship"! They've already released a 2-CD "Essential Jefferson Airplane", and Jefferson Starship and Starship have plenty of hits and album tracks to fill two CDs by themselves.

Always liked the lyric:
Who counts the money ,underneath the bar Who writes the wrecking ball in two part guitar Don't tell us you need us, 'cause we're the simple fools Looking for America, coming through your schools
