I recently started plahing chess against the computer as part of my nightly ritual. Thing is, I quickly figured out I am not that good at it. In any event, I was wondering if anyone who does play chess can recommened some good webpages or books. Sure, google is out there and I will look there, but I was wondering if anyone is really passionate about chess here at Imwan and can share what they know.

I use to play chess all of the time. It's great brain exercise.

It is also one of those games that really stings some peoples' egos when they lose. I've even seen a bar fight from a game of chess.

I was chess champion of my high school, and I don't think I've played a game since. Unless you count games with the young kids as they tried to learn (teaching them how the pieces move).

Control the middle of the board.
The knights are really useful, because they create jeopardy that cannot be blocked.

That's what's nice about playing against the computer! No one will beat you up if you win and the computer doesn't get mad when you do a "do over".

The more I play I find that securing a strong position at the beginning is a must. One can't be afraid to lose valuable pieces. I wish I had better skill at working pieces together. Probably my biggest problem is finishing the game when I have the advantage.

Play Go instead.

Wait...that wasn't the question. Never mind.

Have you ever played Hive? It is a lot like chess. My son and I love it.

No, sure haven't. Board games ended for me with Go, because I decided Go was absolutely the game I wanted to play and master, and there is no one to teach me. It is a game that takes years to master.

Seriously, try Hive. It is fun.

I have had a bit of a board game renaissance as of late. I really enjoy Catan (and Catan Jr with my son). Ticket to Ride is a blast. My boy and I really enjoy Castle Panic, Tsuro, and Survive Atlantis.

But try Hive first. I think it right in your wheelhouse.

I think Catan looks fun. I stop and look at it in the bookstore and imagine playing it.

In fact, I imagine a different life -- one where I play board games.

Chess is one of those things I was good at, but never felt like doing anything with. Sort of regret it, but not enough to do anything about it now.

Catan deserves the following and praise it gets. It is genuinely fun. You should play it with your kids. Family time down in your swank Man Cave. They would love it.

Catan does seem fun, but I don't have enough reliable RL friends to get a game of it together.

I was introduced to it a couple of months ago. The same buddy who organizes game night sold me his copy of Catan Jr. My son, wife and I play that version at least once a week. He is six years old and loves it.

Haven't played much since college. Usually wound up with my opponent saying something like: "Look, you've been staring at the board for 15 minutes, either make a move or I quit."

BTW, anyone watch Wil Wheaton's show Tabletop? It is fun if you want an introduction to modern board games. Sure, there are other reviewers out there, but Wheaton's show is the best produced of the bunch.

You've got kids. Bribe them into playing Go with you by augmenting their allowance if they win a game.

Settlers of Catan was popular 'round the Beach homestead a few years back. I can't remember if we played it last year or not.

I like those movies where a guy walks by two people playing chess and says "Checkmate in two moves."

Not that it helps your questions but I did declare myself chess champion of ImWAN.
