I'm pretty happy with the CDs I already have but I'm always interested in anything Angel.

I absolutely love "On Earth As It Is In Heaven" which is for me their best recording.

And then there was Angel. If there was one band that should have reached the heights of superstardom then surely it ought to have been Angel. Meticulously assembled as part of an advanced master plan to create the perfect rock n roll animal, Angel s manifest destiny revolved around two key components: that s killer musicianship and killer looks. Seasoned players all, their arrival on the Los Angeles rock scene certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons in a world crying out for something fresh, original and very different. Based in Los Angeles, and signed to the irascible Casablanca label (home to Kiss and Funkadelic), Angel s debut album was issued in 1975 and received instant approval from anyone hip to the trip. Musically the focus was firmly on a sort of pioneering seventies mash-up of progressive and melodic hard rock, spearheaded by the extraordinary operatic vocals of Frank DiMino and the wildly dexterous keyboard virtuosity of Gregg Giuffria. Produced by Englishmen Derek Lawrence (Deep Purple, Wishbone Ash) and session guitarist extraordinaire Big Jim Sullivan, the album is treasure trove of surprises and includes several songs that have since gone on to become standard bearers in the star spangled world of melodic-rock mayhem. It was a brilliant concept. Five immaculately coffered musicians dressed in virginal white and playing a flamboyant combination of progressive pomp rock with all the genre trimmings that you could possibly desire. Their stage show was equally as breath-taking, taking in everything from holograms to spectacular magic stunts. It was as if PT Barnum himself had formed a rock band and created the ultimate spectacle. On Earth As It Is In Heaven was Angels third album and showcases the band expanding their horizons by taking a more directly melodic hard rock path, but one with hooks and riffs to the fore. Just because the music was harder and edgier, isn t to say that they had abandoned their progressive roots altogether as Gregg Giuffria s keyboard work will testify. Helluva Band was Angel s second album, and a record that took their brand of adventurous pomp-rock to astonishing levels. Unafraid of throwing everything and the kitchen sink into their music, they reached a new level of achievement which allowed every member of the band to excel at their craft. The lack of bonus tracks is a bit disappointing. What about the King Biscuit show from '76? These got decent remasters from BGO a few years back and even got up to "White Hot". The USA versions aren't all that hot but acceptable.

It will be interesting to see what happens when they get to "Sinful" which has both an alternate mix and bonus tracks but a different title and cover - "Bad Publicity". I'll still pick these up just for the booklets and slight uptick in sound quality. The first 2 LP's are stone cold classics that sound like PURPLE crossed with YES.

I see now why they don't want to send them to me......the price really jumped from what I had ordered back on August 19th. The discs were about 7 British pounds each back then.
