I don't really hear much, if any, change in his voice on the new album over the previous one. Then again, his voice has had a rough side to it for as long as I can recall.

I think it's inevitable that if an artist you love carries on for 25 or 30 years, you are going to lose some of your ardor for that artist. How could anyone maintain the level of excellence of Bring The Family or Slow Turning for 30 years. No one that I can think of has pulled that off. I still think he has flashes of glory though. Walk On is one of the finest records he made, and one of the best records of the 90s. More recently, tracks like Thunderbird and My Baby Blue have kept me coming back.
When a man can come up with a song like Have A Little Faith In Me or Is Anybody There, I'll always give him another chance.

The last Hiatt album I bought was "Beneath This Gruff Exterior," and the last one I remember really liking was "Little Head." I agree that anyone who could create the amazing music that was on "Bring The Family" and "Slow Turning" (and to a slightly lesser extent, "Perfectly Good Guitar") still has it in him to make great music. Until I read reviews that say he's made a modern masterpiece, I'll be content with the 15 Hiatt CDs I already own, but I remain optimistic that he'll come up with something amazing again.
On a related note, does anyone else like the Little Village album? I know that one tends to be described as disappointing, and it's certainly not up to the level of "Bring The Family," but "Don't Think About Her When You're Trying To Drive" is still one of my favorite Hiatt songs.

I love the Little Village Record. Don't Think About Her When You're Trying To Drive is one of the best songs Hiatt ever wrote. And as a proud bald middle aged man, I appreciate Solar Sex Panel.

I figured I couldn't be the only one...who loves the Little Village record...and who's a proud bald middle aged man (but it's only "middle" age if live to 92. I'm hoping to go past that, as long as my ears still work).

I've listened once and I liked it. It rocks out to open and then seems to settle in. That was a week ago, so it isn't fresh in my mind. I'll try to listen again tomorrow so I can offer more of a perspective.

To me this is the best album Hiatt has done since "Walk On." Not a full return to form but very good.

His voice sounds terrific. Much better than it has in years. I wonder how many of these songs are older ones he never released. A couple of them could easily fit on older records.

I thought his early 2000s (first 3) albums were good, with 4-6 very good songs, then his efforts seem to be less appealing to me - with 1-2 songs that I really liked per album.

Where in the HELL did this come from? WOW. Easily his best album since "Perfectly Good Guitar".
I'm only 7 songs into it and I'm completely and totally blown away, I loved "Crossing Muddy Waters" and "Welcome To The Tiki Bar" but this is in a totally different league.
I feel like I did when heard "Slow Turning" or "Stolen Moments" when they first came out. Yes, it's that good.

Well, everyone will have their own opinions, but I never expected to hear a new John Hiatt album as good as this again (and I have them all). I had zero expectations and was blown away. Hopefully, my comments won't have tainted it, but I feel confident that it's easily one of his best albums in the last 20 years – if not the best.

I went to pick this up yesterday at Best Buy along with Van Morrison.
They didn't have it. I checked their site today and no stores have it (at least locally)
So now John Hiatt apparently doesn't make the cut for the ever shrinking BB cd selection.
Looks like I'll pick it up at a local B&N or Amazon...

Looks like I'll pick it up at a local B&N or Amazon... It's getting almost impossible to find anything at Best Buy anymore. So nice that they drove all of the ma & pa cd stores out of business and have now cut their cd selections to next-to-nothing. If it isn't in the Top 40, it seems like the only option is ordering it online. I have been listening to it via Spotify but was going to pick up a copy at Best Buy next time I was near one. After seeing your post, I checked the availability online. Nothing at any of the 10 or so stores here locally either. Pathetic.
