'Planet Of The Apes' sequel loses director?

The new Planet Of The Apes movie is reportedly about to lose its director.

British director Rupert Wyatt helmed 2011's Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, a successful reboot of the franchise that grossed over $481 million (£296 million) worldwide. A sequel, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, has been confirmed by 20th Century Fox, with Wyatt set to return to the director's chair.

However, according to Deadline, Wyatt is planning to pull out because he "didn't feel comfortable" about the studio's scheduled release date of May 2014. Fox declined to respond to the story.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes has a script by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who also wrote the screenplay for the 2011 reboot. British actor Andy Serkis, who won critical acclaim for his motion-capture performance as chimpanzee Caesar, has confirmed that he will reprise his role. The first film also starred James Franco, John Lithgow, Freida Pinto and Tom Felton, but none are officially signed up for the sequel.

Meanwhile, Deadline predicts that Wyatt "will have no trouble finding another film to direct". He is apparently already attached to Agent 13, an upcoming sci-fi project starring Charlize Theron.

This is a bummer. The release date is almost 2 years away, I wonder why Wyatt didn't think that was enough time?

My guess is all the post-filming CGI work. This one will need to be the worldwide ape revolt and war (or at least war). And getting those shots on film and then CGI'd seems like making two movies.

Use real apes, get them riled up, set them loose in New Jersey with cameras rolling. Multiple problems solved.

Pretty sure Lithgow won't be signing on.

What if the zombie apocalypse took place at the same time as the ape apocalypse?

The robot apocalypse would nullify both.

You need time to teach the apes to talk and ride horses.

I like the way this man thinks.

The last movie with Franco wasn't bad, but it was a sort of a remake/remodel of Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes.

It was intended to be. Even the name Caesar was an homage to Conquest.

This latest news really makes me nervous. The last one was awesome. This is a bad sign.

So, in this world of which you speak, humanity's survivors would have to battle apes, zombies, robots, zombie apes, ape robots, robot zombies, and the inevitable zombie robot apes?

If so, I'm embarrassed that I thought there were no great ideas left.

That would be great. Even better than the Planet of the Apes/Alien Nation cross-over miniseries.

This is not setting the benchmark very high, really. :)

This could still be really good. Only Michael Bay could screw this up, really - it's apes riding horses and taking over the world, with a massive budget; how could any director with even half a brain really make a bad movie with that?

This sucks, I thought they'd be coming out with the sequel this year or next at the latest. I'm ready for my apes, damnit!

I'd rather them take 10 years to make something great rather than rush something out.

But if it's going to suck, wouldn't it be better to get it out of the way sooner rather than waiting 10 years to find out it sucked?
