Kinda cool...but the longer this project gets delayed, the less excited I'm getting for it...

After years of talking about, and recording, new music with producer Rick Rubin, ZZ Top are finally sharing some of it with fans. Next Tuesday (June 5), ZZ Top will release “Texicali,” a four track digital collection of the first new studio recordings from the band in nine years. The four new songs offer a preview of the group’s full-length album, as yet untitled, that will be released late this summer or early fall. Fans purchasing the four songs will benefit from a pro-rated discount on the purchase of the full album when it is released. All four tracks will be previewed through an audio stream at Rollingstone.com for one day only, Monday, June 4. These four tracks that comprise Texicali were produced by Rubin and the band’s Billy F Gibbons, and include “I Gotsta Get Paid,” “Chartreuse,” “Over You” and “Consumption.” The first of these is heard in a just-launched campaign for the Jeremiah Weed line of malt beverages that has generated tremendous on-line buzz for the video that depicts Billy, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard performing - to the delight and amazement of the patrons of a convenience store - in a walk-in cooler. “I Gotsta Get Paid,” based on the underground 1990s rap song “25 Lighters,” is also heard on the soundtrack to the international box office hit, "Battleship." The title of the collection is a reference to the locations where the album was recorded. founding of ZZ Top more than 42 years ago and an acknowledgement that the band’s line-up has remained constant ever since. “Based on the visibility of the ‘Gotsta Get Paid’ song, we decided to make available more of a taste of the album than just the one song,” said Rubin. “That’s the beauty of the new digital landscape; we can put out what we want when we want, in the best service of the artist.” “We were itching to get some new music out before the full album release,” added Gibbons. “Making available these four tracks seems like a good way to accomplish that most expeditiously. Dusty, Frank and I are happy with what’s been accomplished in the studio so we figured we’d provide some hot and tasty ‘hors d’oeuvres’ before the main course is served this fall.” The band embarks this week as the headliner for a six-week “Gang of Outlaws” tour that includes bills shared with 3 Doors Down and Gretchen Wilson; following that, ZZ Top departs for Europe where they will be playing concert and festival dates in Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, France, Switzerland and Norway in July. Additional North American dates are planned for August and September.

After nine years, ZZ Top finally issue new music on Tuesday as their “Texicali” EP is released. http://www.hennemusic.com/2012/06/audio ... z-top.htmlProduced by Rick Rubin, the four-song set offers a preview of the group’s full-length album, as yet untitled, that will be released late this summer or early fall. Fans purchasing the four songs will benefit from a pro-rated discount on the purchase of the full album when it is released. “Texicali” features “I Gotsta Get Paid,” “Chartreuse,” “Over You” and “Consumption.” The first track issued was “I Gotsta Get Paid,” a tune based on the underground 1990s rap song “25 Lighters”; it’s also heard on the soundtrack to the international box office hit “Battleship.” The Texas rockers are currently bringing some of the new music to fans as they headline the Gang Of Outlaws Tour, with special guests 3 Doors Down; the pair are being joined by Gretchen Wilson on select dates. Hear some of the new tracks below; you can check out "Chartreuse" at Rolling Stone.

http://ultimateclassicrock.com/zz-top-la-futura/ ZZ Top Reveal Street Date, Cover Art and Full Tracklist for New Album ‘La Futura’
by: Sterling Whitaker Legendary blues rockers ZZ Top are set to release a new album titled ‘La Futura’ on Sept. 11 through American Recordings, the group announced today. ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons produced the album – the group’s first in nine years — with Rick Rubin. The Texas-based trio, who are currently celebrating 42 years with the same lineup of Gibbons, bassist/vocalist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard, returned to their roots for the new tracks, but with a new twist. “We thought long and hard about what this album should be,” Gibbons says in a press release. “We wanted to recall the directness of our early stuff but not turn our backs on contemporary technology. The result of this melding of the past and the present is, of course, ‘La Futura.’” Four of the new tracks – ‘I Gotsta Get Paid,’ ‘Chartreuse,’ ‘Consumption’ and ‘Over You’ - debuted last month as an iTunes-only collection titled ‘Texicali,’ which met with strong sales and glowing reviews. Music Radar summed up the tunes as “ZZ Top crankin’ up some fresh, vital roadhouse blues.” Another track, ‘Flyin’ High,” appropriately made its world premiere in space. The then-unfinished song played on board the Soyuz spacecraft during its launch to the International Space Station thirteen months ago at the request of NASA Astronaut Mike Fossum, a long-time ZZ Top fan and friend who had heard about it in talking with Dusty Hill. ZZ Top are currently on a European tour that will take them to Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, France, Switzerland and Norway. They will return stateside to jump start the release of ‘La Futura’ with a rare performance at the Beacon Theatre in New York City before embarking on a North American tour. ZZ Top ‘La Futura’ Track Listing: 1. ‘I Gotsta Get Paid’ 2. ‘Chartreuse’ 3. ‘Consumption’ 4. ‘Over You’ 5. ‘Heartache in Blue’ 6. ‘I Don’t Wanna Lose, Lose, You’ 7. ‘Flyin’ High’ 8. ‘It’s Too Easy Manana’ 9. ‘Big Shiny Nine’ 10. ‘Have a Little Mercy’

They must be pretty confident this thing will sell, as the release date is a little over a month away and still no links on Amazon or anywhere else.

But does any of it sound like 80's ZZ Top? That's what I want to know. So very tired of their Bluesy Texas Boogie sound that's dominated their music for the past 20+ years!

Don't know what your definition of "Bluesy Texas Boogie" is, but I'm a big blues fan and I've lived in Texas since 1981 and from 1992-2112 ZZ Top has been anything BUT blues. "Deguello" was blues. Synthesizer heavy albums are not usually considered blues, boogie, or Texas.

I'm a native Texan & I like the ZZ Top period from roughly El Loco - Afterburner. Degeullo isn't bad either ("I Thank You", etc). I just dig that 80's synth sound, "guilty as charged". Since the early 90's ZZ Top has gone in a direction that I just don't understand musically speaking. Yes I get the music is definitely less commercial but as a result its also not as accessible either, at least for me it isn't. Has ZZ Top had a top 40 hit sine the very early 90's, I don't think so. I understand that many fans don't like the 80's synth style I get that but i can't understand why they turned their back on a musical style that was very popular commercially speaking? The irony is that most of their music that gets the greatest crowd response on their live albums is their 80's output, go figure. Maybe they said all they had to say vis a vis synthesizers all the way back then. Still I wonder if they even have it them to do a one off synth song just for old time's sake? I was listening to XM/Sirus Radio's Classic Rewind a couple of days a go and they said the new ZZ Top CD will be released in about a month from now. I have listened to the 2 tracks that have been released so far and I do like what i hear musically. I just hope those arent the only 2 songs I like off the eir new release, LOL!

Dooz, I have no problem with the synthesizer sound, I just don't like it attached to ZZ Top, although I did love Eliminator. I haven't liked them since and Afterburner is where they lost me. I wanna hear Billy Gibbons on guitar, not a synthesizer. I don't think they've been relevant for quite some time now, the last song they did that I liked was "What's Up With That?" Which is a good question for them.

Here's the Best Buy exclusive info I could find. Now, I love this band and want the album, but I know I could find the standard version used for $6 or so soon. But these are 2 actual songs, not live versions or remixes, so I guess I have to pony up at Best Buy which makes me cringe. I haven't even set foot in there (like many people) in an eternity.
This deluxe version of the latest release from ZZ Top includes two bonus tracks:
•"Drive by Lover" •"Threshold"

A lunchtime stroll to the downtown Best Buy came up empty, as the ZZ Top CD was sold out. But stop the presses! I actually found a helpful floorwalker who was able to check her computer and tell me that the store on 23rd St. & 6th Ave. had several copies in stock. A quick jaunt on the M train, and I had my copy. And I even made it back to work before my lunch hour was over!

FYI: I just picked my copy of this CD release from my friendly neighborhood Best Buy just yesterday. Hope this helps.
Thanks Linda for the Texacali sound clips. Just curious as to the band's reasoning for releasing a 4 track demo for a CD's worth of 10 songs, impatience perhaps? Those 4 songs represent almost half of the upcoming La Futura CD's 10 tracks, just trying to understand the inherent wisdom of releasing an ep CD so close to the album CD's release date? Yes their fans have waited awhile but don't you think several more months wouldn't have really mattered under the circumstances? Personally I think its strange bordering bad business decision to do this!

At least we can all now get those songs in better quality, plus the additional tracks. Just a hunch.
