Pet Shop Boys Announce New Album ‘Elysium’: Watch “Invisible” Short Film
Pop maestros Pet Shop Boys have announced that the title of their 11th studio album will be Elysium (due in September). The LP, the UK duo’s 11th, was produced earlier this year in Los Angeles by Grammy winner Andrew Dawson. “They’ve never done a record in Los Angeles before,” Dawson, who’s also worked with Kanye West and fun., told us in April. “They wanted to be around that thing, and get that classic L.A. sound — the L.A. players and all that stuff.”
True to that statement, the Boys have released a short film for upcoming album track “Invisible” (watch above), which was directed by Los Angeles artist/film-maker Brian Bress. The duo’s official site notes, “Like several tracks on Elysium, ‘Invisible’ features backing vocals by singer/songwriter James Fauntleroy and veteran singers Oren, Maxine and Julie Waters whose long singing career spans sessions with The Jackson Five to Adele.”
“Invisible” hasn’t been declared an official single by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. Rather, their site states the track was unveiled “to give an idea of the album’s sound.”
“Look at me, the absentee, disappearing finally / goodbye / is it magic or the truth? / strange psychology or justified by the end of youth,” Tennant sings atop the moody, lush synth ballad.
The lyrics come dangerously close to being a metaphor for Pet Shop Boys’ own perception of themselves within the grand scheme of pop — and we say “dangerously” because, really, the idea of them calling it quits scares us to death! Let’s hope, for the sake of music itself, that’s not the case.

First single "Winner" is out today. It is download only from retailers, but a physical CD is available direct from the PSB website. The 4-track single includes the album version of "Winner" plus the bonus tracks "A Certain 'Je ne Sais Quoi,"' "The Way Through the Woods (Long Version)' and a cover of "I Started a Joke," in tribute to the late Robin Gibb.

Listened to this on the way in from work this morning. Perhaps I need to start dialing back my expectations for the LP, because the pseudo Olympic anthem "Winner" has to be one of their very worst singles ever. "The Way Through The Woods" is just awful, too. Really like "A Certain 'Je Ne Sais Quoi'” and the Bee Gees cover, though, so it's possible I'm overreacting...

Living on the edge.
I've been wearing out this album for about a week now. IMHO, it's the best thing that they've done since at least "Bilingual" and probably my favorite since "Very". I've been feeling for a while like they kind of lost their way, but this one has brought me back into the fold. (I haven't bothered with the instrumentals though.)

I also really like this alot -- and I'd have to say it's my favorite of their albums in MANY years. However, two of my friends -- both more fanatical PSB fans than I -- expressed some disappointment with this on initial listenings.

Am I one of those, Patrick or are there two more PSB fans who can't stand it?
I have been trying and failing to like this one through several listens. Don't think I have ever thought so little of a PSB album. I like two of the single's b-sides (the witty "A Certain 'Je Ne Sais Quoi'" and the terrific Robin Gibb cover/tribute of "I Started a Joke") far better than any song on the album. "Ego Music" is, hands down, the worst song they have ever recorded, and "Winner" would make the bottom 10, too, IMO. Hope I'll warm up to a few of these tracks over the coming months, but with Aimee Mann and Pink coming next week (and a new Heart album in three), I suspect it might be a while before I bother to come back to this. I find it interesting that these three albums would come out at the same time, given that I'd rank Neil Tennant, Aimee Mann and Pink 1-2-3 on a list of most clever lyricists working today. But Tennant's usually sharp skills seem tired and toothless here.
