The Hobbit titles and release dates announced

The full titles for Peter Jackson’s two part movie adaptation of The Hobbit have been revealed.

Though rumoured monikers have been floating around online since March this year, Jackson and co have finally confirmed them via a press release.

So... Part one is entitled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and will be released on 14 December 2012, while part two is entitled The Hobbit: There And Back Again, and will be released 13 December 2013.

Both titles are in keeping with JRR Tolkien’s original tome, with There And Back Again being the alternate title that the author used for his 1937 book.

Meanwhile, An Unexpected Journey is a clever riff on An Unexpected Party, the title of the first chapter of The Hobbit.

Jackson also confirmed during an online Q&A session that the White Council will be appearing in the Hobbit films. The White Council are a group of Eldar Lords and Wizards who are tasked by elf Galadriel (a returning Cate Blanchett) with controlling the power of Dol Guldur, the dungeons of the Necromancer.

“I will confirm that both the White Council and Dol Guldur will feature in the movies,” he says of the Council.

“And not just in one scene either. Just how to visualise it has been a challenge, but fortunately Alan Lee and John Howe went crazy with ideas, and it should look pretty cool.”

It's wrong to take one whole book and break it into two parts like this.

Particularly when that one book has already been adapted in 90 minutes... and you just know the Jackson films will be three hours each.

It is hard to see why a book of fairly modest length needs to be divided into two movies. I'd think a standard two-hour running time would do it justice.

After the success of LOTR, Jackson no longer has anyone to reign in his excesses (see King Kong).

Or to rein them in, even.

Title change: according to Boxofficemojo.com, part 2 is now called The Hobbit:
The Desolation of Smaug
.

No, really.

Maybe the marketing geniuses decided that There and Back Again was giving away the ending.

I'm surprised to find that I disagree. That doesn't mean I'll see any of these movies, though.

I question their choice of desolation. It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Also, I attribute desolation to landscapes. Though I suppose Smaug would be feeling sad and depressed at the end of the movie.

Interesting point. This thing is really going to have to be stretched out a lot, even if each movie is only two hours.

Btw, I have no guesses on the second film's title, but I'd bet the third will be called "The Battle of the Five Armies."

Maybe they mean the desolation caused by Smaug? Hmm...

I still don't like it.

Yeah, that's what it refers to, I think.

Spoiler: show
I can't imagine that Smaug would die in the first movie, btw. I think it will take the first movie to get to Smaug, then the second film will be mostly Smaug.

To see how bad desolation caused by smaug really can be, just look at Los Angeles.
It's downright horrible some days. You can't see the hills because the air is so thick and brown.

:D

I wonder how that's pronounced, btw. Is it like the 'au' in 'Sauron' or the 'au' in 'Paul'?

I thought that was a picture of Benedict Cumberbatch, but I'll take your word.
