Definitely one of the most exciting and ground-breaking debuts of all-time. Whether you cared for ELP's grandiose stylings or not was one thing (and most critics surely did not), but you couldn't deny the band's ambition and adventure.
Emerson lake & Palmer still somehow sounds fresh and vsiceral more than 40 years (!) since it's debut in late 1970 (and hopefully we'll hear how fresh with the forthcoming Deluxe Edition in just a week or so!).
In any case, the daring combination of Progressive Rock, Classical and elements of Jazz and even Pop displayed on this album is something. It certainly pikcs up where Emerson's previous band The Nice left off and goes much, much further.
Nothing duff here, although if I had to mention a weaker spot, it would be the "The Three Fates" keyboard suite which is actually quite, but a bit too long and cold and clammy at points.
The rest is pure genius including the crazy instrumental "Tank" with Palmer's fast and furious drum solo and bizarre keyboard sounds including clavinet, and the thunderous rendition of another instrumental piece in Bartok's "The Barbarian" with menacing fuzzy bass and heavy organ sounds.
"Take A Pebble" is 12 minutes of balladry, Jazz, Folk and Classical rolled into one and features stunning vocals from lake. The jazzy mid-section is awesome, and throughout Emerson uses some unusual piano sounds strumming and plucking away like a guitar or even a harp if you will. Maybe even a zither? I jest. Emerson also uses some hand-over-hand runs which would become part of his signature. All I can say is this exemplary writing, arranging and performing.
"Lucky Man" was proof positive of how ELP could write a perfect Pop/Rock song something the snobbish critics always missed about the band! It's a simple, lovely and enduring tune with a wild synth solo (most people couldn't even spell synthesizer let alone play one this well in 1970) and some tasteful drumming. Lake's vocals (including harmonies) are phenomenal and he even plays a tad of electric guitar. I had read that Lake wrote it when he was only 12 or so, whether that's true who knows?
And there's "Knife Edge". Long an ELp fan favorite, this track is filled with power and force. Lake's vocals once again are masterful and the organ and drumming up the ante with strength. It's based on a classical piece by Janacek and I did not know this, but apprently also includes a bit of Bach. A fellow by the name of Richard Fraser helped with the lyrics who had been an ELP roadie, but it seems his contribution was fairly minimal. The lyrics are rather creepy and gothic, so I'm not sure what exactly he may have written.
In any case, this album speaks for itself. Can't wait to hear the Deluxe Edition. Went Gold in the US.

Lucky Man is the only ELP song I like.

That's the end of my contributions to this thread.

Up thru and including BSS I thought they were very good. Loved Pics at Exibition and Tarkus. - this will be an interesting thread thinks I.

not one of my favorites, but at one time i had all their stuff, now down to this album and the box set.

i like this album, still love the synth at the end of "lucky man". used to listen to 'take a pebble" during those special times :)

looking back, i think they were just wee bit over the top.

My third favorite group of all-time, I actually didn't own this album at the time it came out (I was 10 back then) and came into ELP later after hearing them on classic rock radio and buying Tarkus/ BSS/ and Pictures.

So for quite awhile I only knew the first one as the "Lucky Man" album. What a song! One of the best of classic rock.

I saw Greg Lake live with Keith Emerson last year and of course they did Lucky Man. As Greg tells the story, Keith had just got his Moog synth and wasn't sure what to do with it so he locked himself in the studio and played around with it. Hearing what was to become the end of Lucky Man, Greg banged on the window and said thats it! Keith thought it was nonsense but Greg made sure they kept that famous take.

So the little ditty that Greg recorded as a throwaway song to fill out the first album (which he had wrote when he was very young) became their most famous song.

ELP is one of those groups i could listen to every day, no problem.

Really looking forward to the new Steven Wilson re-mixes in 5.1!!! :)

Not at all familiar with ELP (don't know if I've ever even knowingly heard a song) but "don't knock it till you try it" as the saying goes, so maybe I'll give this a listen.

Although I'm a huge prog fan (including all the well-known 60s/70s artists and a lot of more obscure artists and current prog practitioners), and I love a lot of ELP's output, they never quite reached the heights of Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, etc. for me. However, their first several albums came close...they just didn't have the consistency or the diversity of those others groups.

ELP gets a bad rap for overblown tours with 70-piece orchestras and over-indulgent double albums with too many solo performances. And they were guilty of these charges...eventually. Those early albums, though, are masterpieces of songwriting & musicianship, and they actually show a lot of restraint compared to their later work. I love all of side one and "Lucky Man." It's been years since I listened to the debut, so I'm drawing a blank on the others, but I'll get reacquainted with it soon with the deluxe reissues. Can't wait for those surround sound mixes.

As a drummer, need I say anything about Carl Palmer's brilliance? The only problem I ever had with his drumming is that he often plays too fast in concert. Other than that, he's one of the most creative percussionists in rock history.

I love it ! One of the reasons I got into ELP was this album. Its a mile off what they did later in the 70s however when I lost interest in their later studio work.

I was a huge ELP fan for a relatively short time, from Trilogy through Love Beach, and I never got around to the albums before or after those, although I've heard the early ones a few times.

Has there ever been such a popular group where the singer was so clearly the second, or maybe even third banana? I wonder how many people bought this album on the basis of "Lucky Man" only to be surprised by a mostly instrumental display of (admittedly steller) musical chops? Some of the later albums would change this balance, maybe too much by the time Love Beach comes along ... but I'm getting ahead of things.

This album was a natural progression for Greg Lake from the King Crimson 21st Century Schizoid Man era.

And this is such an overlooked factor about ELP as I had alluded to earlier. Greg Lake as singer/songwriter/acoustic guitarist. Critics and music snobs bashed ELP for pretentiousness and self-indulgence which they certainly were guilty of at times, but totally ignored the subtlety of many ELP songs some of which are all-time Rock classics such as "Lucky Man".
But of course, the average person only hears about the bashing of the band and how despised they were by critics. All of the guys were phenomenal talents, but I think Lake was my favorite because of the multitude of things he brought to the table including some very quaint aspects. And let's not forget what a brialliant producer he was for ELP too. Kinda the Jimmy Page of ELP (and it's a P too!).

Spotify doesn't have this, so that sucks. However, duh, I do know "Lucky Man" but didn't know it was by ELP. :?

Edit: Never mind, they do have it; it's just that their search function sucks.

Edit 2: Gave it a try and it's just not my thing. There's some interesting instrumentation and the drumming in "The Tank" in particular is pretty awesome, but I found the keyboards a bit too overbearing. The only track that works for me is "Lucky Man".
