Kirsty s 1981 debut album finally takes its CD bow. Full of charm, humour and her quirky ear for what makes a great pop song, there s a diversity and eclecticism at work here that brings together the cheeky pop of the Top 20 hit .... Chip Shop..., the swing jazz of The Real Ripper, the kinky reggae of the Hollies Just One Look, the feisty new wave energy of Clock Goes Round and the faux-country cover of George Jones' He Thinks I Still Care. Perhaps what makes Desperate Character still sound so vibrant though are the sweeping, sumptuous 60s recreations of See That Girl, Until The Night and Hard To Believe. Kirsty takes the songs beyond parody, particularly See That Girl, one of the best songs she ever wrote. She also tackles, tongue in cheek, a Shangri-La's style Teenager In Love, but this a long way removed from Frankie Lymon's paean; here Kirsty is nursing a tequila and mourning a lost love as she sings in character of a 'lonely, alcoholic teenager in love!' Ahead lay more hit singles and acclaimed albums such as Kite, Electric Landlady and Titanic Days; a permanent voice on Christmas airwaves thanks to that enduring Fairytale of New York; parenthood and a glittering second career as as a session singer for the likes of U2, the Smiths and Talking Heads. But for many, the first appreciation of this special singer/songwriter came courtesy of Desperate Character and this release provides an opportunity to refresh memories and make fresh introductions to the one and only Kirsty MacColl.

Universally acknowledged as a minor masterpiece, Kite (1989) was only Kirsty s second album but it features much of her best work as both singer and songwriter. Witty, wistful and biting, with wonderful playing by the ensemble cast of musicians, highlights are numerous; notably the singles Free World, Innocence and her masterful hit cover of The Kinks Days. As her frequent collaborator Johnny Marr said: 'Kite was the first time she'd expressed herself the way she really wanted to. By that time she'd really worked herself out as a songwriter... That was her first unified personal statement I think. I was really proud to be involved with it.' Apart from the cover of Days, all the songs on Kite were written by Kirsty, some in partnership with guitarists Marr or Pete Glenister. As Q magazine put it at the time: 'It's a cornucopia of great pop tunes and catchy choruses, one tumbling right after the other, with flawless arrangements ranging from reflective solo acoustic guitar to irresistibly sprightly fiddles and flowing, tasteful rock with a dash of country.... And lyrically , to find a whole album of such effortlessly executed wit and wordplay with a minimum contrivance - well, Elvis Costello must be just green with envy.' You only have to play Kite once to appreciate why it is held in such high regard by all who heard it. Kirsty acted as her own guide, never leaping onto any bandwagon or musical trend that happened by and the songs sound as vibrant and fresh today as they did over 20 years ago.

Successfully drawing together a number of musical styles, Kirsty s third album, released in 1991, yielded two wonderful hit singles, the hip hop-influenced, Johnny Marr co-write Walking Down Madison and My Affair, her first highly successful foray into Latin music. It also reunited her with the Pogues on The One And Only. This expanded version complete with illustrated 28-page booklet - features the related non-album b-sides, as well as four acoustic BBC session tracks recorded at the time of the UK release. Kirsty really caught the latin music bug when she and husband Steve Lillywhite worked on David Byrne's 1989 album Rei Momo. She would invite many of the musicians who contributed to Rei Momo to supplement her regular collaborators - including Pete Glenister and Mark Nevin - on Electric Landlady and it was no surprise that it resulted in a more diverse set than ever before. Away from the headline-grabbing singles, which received some fantastic remixes (included on disc 2), Electric Landlady features many accomplished songs, though they are often shot through with regret and foreboding, such as Halloween, My Way Home, All I Ever Wanted, We'll Never Pass This Way Again and The Hardest Word. The latter was co-written with her brother Hamish and we've discovered a fantastic unreleased take of the song in amongst the master tapes. As The Guardian commented on its release, 'This is a defiantly untrendy record, which is one reason it deserves to do well. 'Indeed, Kirsty never travelled with the herd and here she's on irrepressible form, surrounded by fizzing latin percussion, that divine voice delivering some career high performances.

Kirsty pulled yet another album from the top drawer with Titanic Days in late 1993. Superbly arranged with typically sharp lyrics and classy melodies, it yielded the beautiful single Angel, which received plenty of remixes (added here as bonus tracks), including a recently unearthed 'Mysterious' mix; while Soho Square has become something of an anthem with her fans. 'I always thought it should have been a single," said Mark Nevin. 'Every time I am in Soho Square and I see Kirsty's bench there, I feel very proud to have written that song with her.' Mostly recorded in her home studio with regular co-conspirator Nevin and then picked up for release by ZTT, Titanic Days is certainly darker (her 'sad divorce album', as Kirsty put it) but no less enjoyable than any of her previous long players. The loneliness and emotional distress in the lyrics, the bitter pills, are all wrapped in beautiful, lushly euphoric arrangements and relentlessly catchy hooks. A firm favourite with her fans, Titanic Days was obviously made with great care and attention and generously rewards those that pay close attention to it. 'MacColl emerges from behind the wit and wordplay with a new emotional directness,' concluded Q magazine. In turn Pause & Play found it to be her best album to date: 'in a way, her own Pet Sounds.'

"Chip Shop" was played a lot when it came out on one of the radio stations here. I loved hearing it and it always made me feel good.

I wonder why Titanic Days is a couple dollars more than the other 2-disc sets.

I could never even find Desperate Character on vinyl, so I'll jump on the CD. But didn't I already buy expanded editions of her other albums already?

I need these Salvo reissues, Salvo has done great work previously with other bands catlgs I have no reluctance here. I believe Kirsty was married to Steve Lillywhite at one time and also collaborated with her on some of her work. She was a great talent and was very sad to lose her in such an untimely passing. I am very happy to see Salvo remembering her this way. Rick A.

For the MacColl collectors out there, are these definitive versions, or are there other tracks that should have been included?

I am by no means a Kirsty expert. However, I have a CD compilation, entitled "The Essential Collection", which includes some songs that do not appear here. I'd say that three of the most glaring omissions from the reissue program are "They Don't Know" (Tracy Ullman's big hit, which was written by Kirsty); "A New England" (regular and 12" version) and the duet with the Pogues "Fairytale Of New York"! http://www.discogs.com/Kirsty-MacColl-T ... ase/7680301 There's A Guy Works Down The Chip Chop Swears He's Elvis 3:09 2 A New England 3:51 3 Patrick 3:07 4 Eighty Year Old Millionaire 2:52 5 See That Girl 3:04 6 Until The Night 3:10 7 Just One Look 2:18 8 He Thinks I Still Care 2:57 9 They Don't Know 3:03 10 Turn My Motor On 2:24 11 Please, Go To Sleep 2:31 12 Terry 3:55 13 Quietly Alone 2:40 14 Teenager In Love 2:38 Bonus Tracks 15 A New England (12" Version) 7:56 16 Terry (12" Version) 5:19 17 There's A Guy Works Down The Chip Chop Swears He's Elvis (Country Version) 3:44

Too bad, as there are some essential tracks from that period. I am glad that Desperate Character is finally getting a CD release. I've been listening to a needle drop of it for the last couple of years and really enjoying it.

It would have been nice if "Desperate Character" had been expanded to include Kirsty's Stiff singles; it's especially odd considering that all the currently available Stiff releases are released through Salvo. And unfortunately, "The One And Only" isn't even a definitive overview of Kirsty's Stiff recordings.
*sigh* - what a wasted opportunity.

Galore was originally released on I.R.S - not sure who if Salvo owns that as well, but since Titanic Days was I.R.S., I would expect it to come under Salvo for reissue...maybe this would come out after the other remasters?
