From rollingstone.com:

R.E.M. have announced a remastered 25th anniversary edition of their 1987 LP Document, featuring a previously unreleased live recording of a concert during their Work tour on September 14th, 1987 in Utrecht, Holland. The release includes new liner notes and is packaged in a lift-top box that contains four postcards. R.E.M. will also issue a remastered 180-gram vinyl edition of the release.

Document was R.E.M.'s first platinum record, featuring the Top 10 hit "The One I Love" and one of the band's most enduring songs, "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)." Reviewing the album , Rolling Stone's David Fricke praised the record, calling it their "finest album to date" and writing, "Document is the sound of R.E.M. on the move, the roar of a band that prides itself on the measure of achievement and the element of surprise."

The band wasn't sure what to expect when the album came out. "There are a few things on this album that could do well at Top 40 radio," guitarist Peter Buck told Rolling Stone in 1987. "But then I can't imagine it happening, knowing us. So I don't know if I have any commercial expectations for this one at all. I assume it will sell some, somebody's got to buy it."

Document was certified platinum, with sales of more than 1 million copies, less than six months later – the first in a string of platinum-selling albums that included the band's next five releases: Green, Out of Time, Automatic for the People, Monster and New Adventures in Hi-Fi. Last September, R.E.M. announced they were splitting up after three decades.

The remastered 25th anniversary edition of Document is set for a September 25th release.

I'm glad they returned to the appropriate era live shows. The demos were nice on the last two, but I listen to the shows a lot more. I do wish they would have stuck with one kind of packaging for these releases.

Totally Useless Trivia: R.E.M.'s Document album was released on September 1, 1987, the same day as Michael Jackson's Bad. Huge crowds were lined up outside the Tower Records on Sunset Blvd. that day, with TV cameras and reporters all over the place. One reporter for NBC Channel 4 started talking to my and my friend, until he was horrified to find out that we were probably the only ones there who were waiting to buy the new R.E.M. album instead of MJ's, and he rushed off to find someone else to testify about Michael-mania on camera. :p

Good choice for an era-appropriate live show here. The 9/14/87 Utrecht concert featured the "Medley: Time After Time / Red Rain / So. Central Rain" live performance, which was released as a b-side to "Finest Worksong". I hope they include the full medley here, though it is not listed as such (perhaps a licensing issue with Peter Gabriel's "Red Rain"?). Looks like it's not the complete show either, covers of Wire's "Strange" and Iggy's "Funtime" appear to have been dropped from this release.

Also apparently missing in action are the covers of "Superman" and "Harpers".

Good point. There were cover songs missing from the concert discs of the Murmur and Reckoning deluxe editions, as well, but interestingly enough a cover of Lou Reed's "Femme Fatale" was included on the latter.

I would love to see complete shows as a bonus disc, but time-wise that may not be possible to fit on a single disc. Probably licensing costs factor in, also

I think the complete show would be a two-disc affair, and yes, licensing costs are frequently a factor.

And when it comes to labels (not to mention financially struggling artists like R.E.M.), it's easier to do it cheaper than to do it right.

It's a shame that they opted not to make one disc a Hybrid SACD with the 5.1 mix or add a DVD-A as a bonus. This was the first REM disc to get the surround treatment.

Looks like R.E.M. was also covering Lou Gramm on the Document tour.

As Geff's favorite coach, Pete Carroll, would say: I'm jacked. I've been waiting for this and hoping the Utrecht show would be included. I have a crappy sounding boot of that show and will be happy to have an officially released version. I'm bummed that Superman isn't on there, but I'll live.

Funny, I was just thinking of starting a thread on whether this is the least inspirational fall release schedule in a long time. This release will make up for the dry spell.

I remember reading an interview with the band where Stipe was commenting on how he thought "Midnight Blue" was a classic pop song.
