Anita Baker sets Nov. 9 to release next album

by Brian McCollum, Free Press Pop Music Writer

Anita Baker fans can circle the date on their calendar: The much-loved Detroit songstress has targeted Nov. 9 to issue her next album.

“21st Century Love,” announced today, will be Baker’s seventh album and her first since 2004’s comeback record “My Everything.” That album debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and was met with largely glowing reviews. It also marked her return to public life after a decade away to raise a family, and she has performed in metro Detroit every summer since.

Baker will play DTE Energy Music Theatre on Aug. 28.

The new disc’s 10 tracks will include a pair of collaborations: Snoop Dogg raps on a cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “Give Me Your Love,” the album’s first single, and R&B crooner Tyrese will guest on a remake of his 1998 hit “Lately.”

“21st Century Love” will be Baker’s second album for Blue Note Records.

The previously announced album never materialized. However, there was a posting on Anita's Facebook page for a new single, "Lately" from the forthcoming album, "Only Forever".

Interesting... the e-mail I got from EMI recently slated it for October 23. Not sure which date is right.

August 7th is for the single, so October 23rd is entirely possible for the album.

Anita sounds great in the short sample, but the production sounds terribly dated!

Anita Baker is still giving the best she's got on new album
By Elysa Gardner, USA TODAY

NEW YORK – For more than 25 years, Anita Baker's voice has been one of the most distinctive and beloved in R&B. She does not take it for granted.

"I have as many pictures of my vocal cords as I do of my children," Baker says, laughing. "I have a great ear, nose and throat doctor, and we look at them — if there's some redness, maybe I'll take a little time off."

Luckily, Baker and her throat are in good form at the moment, and the 54-year-old singer is poised to release her first studio album in seven years on Sept. 25. The single Lately arrives Tuesday. Like other tunes on the collection, Only Forever, it exudes the elegant but earthy warmth that has made her singing, for millions of fans, synonymous with romance.

"I'd love to be the political voice of my generation, but that's not my gift," says Baker, taking a breather in the downtown studio where she's laying down final tracks for the album. "Typically, the theme of my albums, if there is a theme, is, 'How does it feel?' And that always leads to love songs. It just does."

The love songs on Only Forever do cover slightly broader territory. "Lately, I've been writing odes to my family," Baker says. Her younger son, Ed, 18, starts college next month; like brother Walter, 19, he's studying music.

"So I'm an empty-nester now," Baker says. "There's a song, Free, that just came through me, watching them go out into the world. I want them to hear my voice and to have advice readily available to them."

Her sons' decision to enter into their mom's famously risky profession hasn't been a source of anxiety. "I've always encouraged them to follow their bliss. My father worked on assembly lines in Detroit while I was growing up. Every day, I watched him do what he needed to do to support the family. But he told me, 'Life is short. Do what you want to do.' "

Baker continues to apply her father's counsel in her own career. For Only Forever, she "initially recorded everything live to analog, to be true to my soul. To me, (digital audio software) Pro Tools should be an editing device, not something used to create music. But I also want to be an artist of this time, to embrace 21st-century recording techniques. And with amazing producers, I was able to balance those goals."

Essence entertainment director Cori Murray expects that the classic sound suggested by Lately will resonate with fans "who have been waiting for Anita to come back. Her popular songs were true love songs, not drama-filled or begging her man. Even if she sang about heartache and pain, there was a beautiful sweetness."

Fans may want to soak up that sweetness while they can, as Baker says that Only Forever "is probably my last commercial record. But I have a gospel album in me, a jazz album."

There are simply "other things I want to say. They're right in here," she says, touching a spot somewhere between her vocal cords and her heart. "And I'll say them."

Anita Baker Is Back With a Hit and a Plan for Covers Album
by Gary Graff, Detroit | August 16, 2012 4:00 EDT

Anita Baker says the prospect of her first all-new album in eight years "just kinda feels surreal."

"It's kind of like I'm dreaming," Baker tells Billboard about "Only Forever," which is due out Oct. 23 with the first single, a version of Tyrese's 1999 hit "Lately" produced by The Underdogs, just out and surging on the charts. "I've talked about it for so long, I've worked on it for so long, talked to so many people about it -- and it's finally here. It's no longer an idea or a concept. It's in my hand. I'm holding it, touching it. It's pretty great."

The Grammy Award-winning songstress cites a couple of factors behind the long wait for "Only Forever," including her divorce from husband Walter Bridgforth, Jr., management shuffles at her label, Blue Note Records, and a process that found Baker starting work on the album in an analog studio in Nashville during 2010, then switching to digital.

"It was a whole little experiment to see what would make the transition," says Baker, who credits new Blue Note president Don Was with helping her get everything in final form. "The test here is can I keep my analog heart and soul but still be of my time as well. If I'm here, I need to be able to adapt and move forward and express myself within the mediums of the day but still make it sound honest to who I am -- and that was a big task. I learned a lot transferring from analog to digital."

"Lately" has gotten the "Only Forever" campaign off to a strong start, with an Aug. 6 launch during which Clear Channel's Urban Adult Contemporary stations played the song every single hour. The strategy worked: "Lately" debuted at No. 10 on Billboard's Urban AC chart and No. 41 on R&B Songs.

Baker says the song is "a prelude" to a covers album she hopes to do in the future and adds that she started performing it in an effort to lure Tyrese back into music.

"He was off doing movies and stuff, and he was between movies and was like, 'Man, I really need to be doing something," Baker explains. "I'm like, 'What are you talking about?! You're a singer, man! You need to sing!' "

The song has been a regular part of her live act, and she says Tyrese will appear on the album version of the song.

Besides The Underdogs, Baker's other collaborators on "Only Forever" include bassist Nathan East, who took on some co-production duties and "was basically my quality control, 'cause he knows my tradition and my origins," Barry Eastmond (who produced 2004's "My Everything" and "Christmas Fantasy" in 2005) and songwriter Tom Keene, while Baker produced a track called "Falling In Love" and joined forces with Was for another tune called "Free." "Heartbeat" was co-written by the late Vernon Fails, and other titles include "Let Go," "Play Me Your Music" and the title track. "It's just a bunch of ol' love songs, the kind of stuff that we do," Baker says.

Baker is next slated to perform on Aug. 22 at the Hollywood Bowl, with shows also announced in Highland, Calif., and at the Minnesota State Fair. "I'm always on the road," she says. "We're out there all the time; we just don't blast it. It just never occurs to me to announce, like, a tour -- it's like getting up and alerting the media, 'I'm going to work!' That's just creepy to me. We sell out everywhere we go, so people do know about it, and that's all that matters."

Anita Baker was set to drop her new album Only Forever on December 4th via EMI. Now UrbanBridgez.com has learned the new album will be released sometime in the first quarter of 2013!

There's an Amazon placeholder link for the album, but it references a street date of January 15 that has already come and gone...

This album has been coming for several years now, so the latest delay is not surprising!

Here is an announcement from the Blue Note website in December when Anita Baker received a Grammy nom for her latest single (which must be based more on her name recognition, than on the dated sound of the song), which states the album is "due out 2013", with nothing more specific:

Quote:
Anita Baker Nominated for 16th Grammy Award
Record-Breaking Single “Lately” up for 2013 “Best Traditional R&B Performance”

Songwriter, performer, producer and R&B icon Anita Baker has just been nominated for her 16th career Grammy Award for her record-breaking single “Lately.”

Baker will look to garner her ninth Grammy Award with “Lately,” which is nominated for “Best Traditional R&B Performance.” She has won eight Grammy awards previously.

“Lately” is from Baker’s forthcoming album, Only Forever, due out 2013. The much-anticipated album will be her first in eight years, and the single “Lately” instantly became the biggest release of her career, debuting at #10 on Billboard’s Urban AC Chart – the highest single debut of anyone in 15 years.

The success of “Lately,” which recently hit #1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B chart and sat atop the Jazz chart for five consecutive weeks, also put Baker in the record books. With her latest #1, she surpassed Whitney Houston for the longest span of number-one hits. Houston’s record was 14 years; beginning with Baker’s first #1, 1994’s “Body & Soul” to 2005’s “How Does It Feel?” and up to “Lately,” she sets the new mark of 18 chart-topping years.

“Lately” was released digitally on August 7, 2012, and was produced by The Underdogs and executive-produced by Anita Baker and Don Was. Currently touring in support of Only Forever, Baker performed at Radio City Music Hall and sold out four shows in five days in late August, including the famed Hollywood Bowl.

Baker is an eight-time Grammy winner, with four platinum and two gold albums to her name. She shot to fame with her classic album Rapture, and experienced critical and commercial success with subsequent albums Giving You the Best I Got, Compositions, Rhythm of Love, and My Everything. She has also released a successful greatest hits (The Best of Anita Baker), holiday (Christmas Fantasy), and live album (A Night of Rapture: Live).

What the hell is the delay with this thing? I hope she's not trying to fashion some sort of return to the stratospheric sales of "Rapture" by making a "Part II". All of the subsequent albums in her catalog are enjoyable just as they are. Get the damn thing out! You're not Stevie Wonder, Miss Thing. You're not allowed to take this long.
