LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- Actor Ernest Borgnine, famous for his honest, every man roles in films in the 1950s and 1960s, has died. He was 95.

A spokesman for the actor said he passed away Sunday at his home in Los Angeles.

Borgnine was born as Ermes Effron Borgnine on January 24, 1917 in Hamden, Connecticut to Italian immigrants.

After graduating high school, Ernest joined the navy and worked a series of factory jobs before his mother encouraged him to go into acting.

Borgnine's big break came in 1949 in the Broadway play "Harvey." Several years later, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue films.

In 1955, he won his first Academy Award as the shy, love-seeking butcher Marty Piletti in "Marty."

He is also famous for his role as Lt. Commander Quinton McHale in the 1960's television series "McHale's Navy."

The actor worked steadily even into the last few years, including voicing a recurring character on the children's animated series "Spongebob Squarepants."

Borgnine has been married 5 times and has three children.

I had no idea he was in that until I borrowed a friends DVD copy of it, of course I also thought he had died years ago before the announcement that he was coming to Texas for Texas Frightmare in May of this year... :oops:

I loved him as the janitor in Gattaca - it was such a small, understated role but he was just brilliant in it.
