Aimee posted the following message on Facebook today:
"Just finished my new record!!!! WOOO!!"
No mention of a title, release date or whether it will include the four songs written especially for the now-abandoned "The Forgotten Arm" musical ("You've Got To Be Willing To Hurt The One You Love," "Conflicted," "Easy to Die" and "Eiffel Tower").
This immediately takes top spot on my "Can't wait for..." list of 2012.

david,
i am in the other camp. i have traded in all of my aimee mann CD's except the best of, and i feel every one her records is the same one done over again with different words. terribly boring and mundane. comparable to sara mclachlan.
sorry and not meant to be a threadcrap at all.

Well, let me take a middle ground. I acknowledge at least some truth to Renny's observation, Mann does have something of an um, signature sound. heh heh But for some reason I can hear past that and I enjoy every one of her albums. I really can't argue with anyone who finds her same-y but for me this is a must buy.
(did I save the threadcrap?)

No offense taken; no surprise registered. But in my book, she's one of the most clever and intelligent lyricists around. Have loved her work since the first 'til Tuesday album and consider "@#%&*! Smilers" to not only be the best CD of 2008, but one of the best CDs released in the past decade. I bow in her general direction and eagerly await both the new collection and her next Atlanta show.

I've picked up all her solo albums, enjoyed them all, so I'll definitely get this new one. I would say that Whatever is my favorite of her albums as it's the most played.

I really like Aimee's second and third albums with 'Til Tuesday, but somehow her solo work has not grabbed me. I mean I buy them, play them once (or a few times), and then file them away. I guess of her solo albums, I think I liked "Bachelor No. 2" the best. It just seems that her voice changed between the albums with 'Til Tuesday and her solo work, and not in a way that I liked...

I am really looking forward to Aimee's new album. One of the most underrated and underappreciated artists out there. You have to give her a LOT of credit for what she has done without support from any major record label. The last two were really good; Forgotten Arm and Smilers and I find myself listening more to all the earlier stuff with "I'm with Stupid" topping them all. She is one of my favorite songwriters and I never feel she is "Going Through The Motions" on her work. She puts on a great show live too. I will be pre-ordering from her website.

I do occasionally listen to her first 2 CDs "Whatever" and "I'm With Stupid" but aside from a few random cover songs - It ALL sounds the same. On another note - Forgive me if I've already told this story: In 1996 - I curated a photo exhibition at the Earl McGrath Gallery on 57th Street. For the invite Earl selected the Iggy Pop full frontal photo - a lovely photograph taken by my friend - Gerard Malanga. This photo had NOT yet been used commercially was NOT yet overexposed (so to speak.) I had just that day received the invites from the printer in NYC and returned to the suburbs just in time to see Aimee perform an all ages show in Danbury, Connecticut. Being that I was very excited about my exhibition - I handed Aimee the first freshly printed post card invite face down so she could read: "The Cool and the Crazy" photo exhibition, New York City etc... Yes she was still - 1-2-3 testing the mic and maybe preoccupied but then she flipped the invite over to see naked Iggy and announced to everyone: "Some asshole just handed me a post card of Iggy Pop naked - which everybody has seen..." Needless to say I was shamed and embarrassed and quickly walked away. I continue to buy Aimee Mann's music but I will always associate that experience I had with her and I still feel her sound is tired and redundant. Just sayin'...

I'm looking forward to new music from Aimee Mann, though I'd have to agree to a lot of it does sound similar. However, the lyrics she writes, the stories her songs tell are always compelling, and I find many of her melodies catchy. My favorite solo work of her are the "Magnolia" soundtrack, "Bachelor No. 2," and "Lost in Space." The only solo album of hers that I've been disappointed with was her Christmas record.

I had a friend who worked at the short-lived Imago Records when Aimee's first solo album, Whatever, was released. I always kinda liked Til Tuesday but never thought much about them. That album completely floored me at the time, so much so that I bought her next release (I'm With Stupid) as a very expensive import, and I like that album nearly as much as her debut. None of her subsequent albums have had a similar effect on me, as she seemed to settle on one mood (downbeat) and tempo (slow), but I like her voice so much that each album is worth owning (even her holiday album, which perfectly captures the melancholy of the season). I go into each album with modest expectations and I'm never disappointed. Looking forward to her new one in 2012.

Mann, like many artists, tends to mine the same territory from album to album. This doesn't make her music weak or repetitive. Quite the opposite, the revisiting of past lyrical/musical stances enables her to sharpen and refine her songs. Her lyrics are always smart/snarky funny, and, yeah, her songs are a bit melancholy, but they are always musically vibrant. And she always displays a great degree of empathy and tenderness towards her characters, a quality a lot of songwriters lack. For me, her high water mark is Bachelor #2, but I always look forward to a new release from her.
Thanks for the article. It mentions Aimee's appearance in the first season of the TV show, "Portlandia." It was hilarious with Aimee playing herself as a house cleaner for Fred Arnisen and Carrie Brownstein (from Sleater-Kinney) in one episode. I'm looking forward to the album.

Living on the edge.
I was a fan of Til Tuesday from before the release of their first album, however, I personally found Aimee Mann to be a bit of a bitch. She worked the counter at the original Newbury Comics on Newbury Street in Boston even when the band was playing around the area, but she was a snotty person in the store and wouldn't give anyone the time of day, even just to say "Hey...like your band!" Now who knows, her attitude towards others could have been any number of things. Maybe she was just shy and couldn't deal with people in public well. Of course then she probably shouldn't have been working in a customer service kind of job.
Once "Voices Carry" broke on MTV, things changed dramatically in her life and the life of the band, but I really liked the three Til Tuesday albums and I never thought that they sold out to the pop charts. My favorite album of the three was probably the third one, but I liked them all. I even thought that her first two solo records had a similar feel to them as the Til Tuesday albums. When she left the major label though, I just coincidentally lost interest. I still buy all the albums and I'm sure that I'll buy this one, but they just don't resonate with me personally like the earlier albums did. That's just me though...your mileage may vary.

September 18 is now the release date, with the lead single being the track "Labrador."
For a preview, here's an excellent live version of the track:
With new albums by Aimee Mann and Pet Shop Boys dropping in September, it will be hard for anything released later in the year to move into heavy rotation with me.

From Aimee's website:
Quote:
AIMEE MANN’S HIGHLY ANTICIPATED NEW ALBUM CHARMER OUT SEPTEMBER 18TH
“One of the top 10 living songwriters along with Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.”—NPR
“One of the finest songwriters of her generation.” —The New York Times
The long awaited new album from Aimee Mann, Charmer, will be released September 18 on Superego Records. Influenced by what Mann calls the “super pop” of the 70s and 80s, the album is her first release since 2008’s celebrated @#%&*! Smilers, which the BBC called “undeniably beautiful.” Of Charmer, her eighth studio album, Mann comments, “I’m fascinated by charming people and the whole idea of charm. It's hard to remember sometimes that there is usually an agenda behind the act of being charming, and that is what I'm most interested in. Is someone’s charm being utilized just to try and entertain people, make them feel special and interesting, or is there a more sinister purpose behind it? Sometimes I think ‘charm’ can just be another word for ‘manipulation.’” The album also includes a duet with James Mercer of The Shins on “Living a Lie.” Mann will support the new album with tour dates this fall. See reverse for tracklist.
Charmer was produced by longtime friend and band member Paul Bryan and recorded with Ryan Freeland (Ray LaMontagne, Bonnie Raitt) at Stampede Origin in Los Angeles. Bryan joins Mann on the album, among many other friends and collaborators including J.J. Johnson, Jebin Bruni and Jamie Edwards. Mann wrote all of songs on the album, though two, “Living a Lie” and “Soon Enough,” are collaborations with Paul Bryan and Tim Heidecker, respectively.
Mann began her solo career in 1993 with the album Whatever and made a name for herself through her independent success and the founding of her record label, SuperEgo. In addition to her solo work, she has appeared on many film soundtracks and composed the soundtrack for Paul Thomas Anderson’s much-lauded Magnolia. Since @#%&*! Smilers, Mann has performed for the President Obama and the First Lady at the White House, appeared as herself on the hit indie TV series Portlandia and fast become an internet darling. Named one of The Huffington Post’s “13 Funny Musicians You Should Be Following On Twitter,” Mann has gained a diehard social media following for her quick wit and stinging observation, much of which is reflected on the new album.
Charmer Tracklist
1. Charmer 2. Disappeared 3. Labrador 4. Crazytown 5. Soon Enough 6. Living A Lie 7. Slip and Roll 8. Gumby 9. Gamma Ray 10. Barfly 11. Red Flag Diver

This album comes with a bonus 7" vinyl single at many indie retailers. The two tracks on it are "Brother's Keeper," which can also be downloaded from amazon and iTunes, and "Mea Culpa," which thus far seems to be exclusive to this single.
