It's been a while since our last missive, but fear not this is for good reason as we've been plotting, hatching and other mysteriously creative verbs. Our new record deal is finally signed! The new album "Can I Borrow A Feeling" (not really called that) will be released early next year. We have been working with various different luminaries and are finally beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. A nice tunnel mind you, like a tunnel of love.
Our summer season of festivals is now over - thanks to all who came to see us. We a have a gig in Linz, Austria on the 31st October and are planning an Indonesian show before the end of the year.
There are other plans afoot which we don't want to jinx by mentioning but we'll email you as soon as we can.
In the mean time you might want to check out this interview that Bob recently did with legendary Rolling Stones manager and producer Andrew Loog Oldham here.
love Sarah Bob and Pete xxx

From their website: http://www.saintetienne.com/Quote: Like the album it's taken from, Tonight is all about the primal and atavistic pull that all good pop music exerts, about how the unadulterated thrill of a great band or gig can sometimes feel like a hotline straight to your heart.
The track is produced by Xenomania lynchpin TIm Powell (Girls Aloud, Kylie, Sugababes), and mixed by Richard X, and in Bob's own words, "Tonight is about the anticipation of going to see your favourite group. For some reason, I imagine this show is at the Forum in Kentish Town. The whole album is about the power of pop, how it affects and shapes your life."

E-mail message from Saint Etienne with album update: Quote: DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC?
Do you remember that special alchemy that transforms even the most mundane of experiences - walking home with the headphones on at night, sitting in a bedroom with your friends in the day, getting ready to go out on the weekend - into a lingering moment of seamless enchantment, one that resonates for the rest of your life?
Our new album, Words and Music by Saint Etienne, is about that. About how music affects your life. How it defines the way you see the world as a child. How it can get you through bad times in unexpected ways. How songs you've known all your life can suddenly develop a new attachment and hurt every time you hear them.
More than how it affects and reflects your life though, the album is about believing in music, living your life by its rules.

I've listened to this a few times now. My initial reaction was mixed but I'm liking it more with every listen. This is probably the most commercial album this band has ever done. None of the weird instrumental interludes of their earlier efforts, but plenty of dance beats and a production style that seems to be just a tad more "of it's time" than we usually get from this group. Even the dreaded autotune makes an appearance, though it at least seems more for effect than to make up for any flaws in Sarah's singing.
Which is all a bit surprising considering the subject matter (music and how it affects our lives) and the decidedly retro taste shown by Bob and Pete in their DJ sets/mixes. Maybe they just felt that after such a long wait since their last album, they needed to do whatever was necessary to make this one a hit.
Anyway, I'm not going to let a few trendy touches ruin this album for me. It has some great songs and Sarah's singing is charming, as always. Saint Etienne's fans will be pleased. I'm just not sure this is one I would use to bring a non-fan into the fold.

This might well eclipse "Tiger Bay" as my favorite Saint Etienne album. I like practically everything on it. The remix disc is a nice bonus, too.

BUMP: Added cover image and Deluxe Edition order link to first post.
The deluxe edition includes a bonus CD of remixes. Lucky for me, that's the one that showed up at 'Rama today.
