The stuff you posted is pretty much crap. I like his earlier work. He's gone off on a stylistic tangent that I don't care for at all. But I couldn't quite bring myself to vote poison.

I like the first image, but none of the others. I don't know if I've ever said this about comic art before, but this stuff is irritating to look at. (I wonder if this is how the Frank Robbins-haters feel when they see his stuff?)

It is amazing to see how different people's reactions are. I'd kill to be able to draw like that.

When he started on the X-Men, I had a drawing student who loved him. So, I appreciate his early work.

His earliest stuff was him doing his best Art Adams impression.

No matter what you may think of the guy, I think he's a pretty gifted artist; he was drawing professionally for Marvel by the age of 16 or 17 -- go to school, come home, draw comics professionally, go to sleep and then get up the next day to do it all over again. Pretty cool.

He did the Deadpool mini-series when he was 19 -- a year later he was drawing Uncanny X-Men, their top book.

I really like that first image. He's good illustrating the kind of Squareenix videogame aesthetics.

But overall, I'm not a fan.

Love his work.

Love. It.

His Scarlet Witch costume is still my alltime favourite of hers.

An amazing talent, especially considering his age at the time.

The Battle Chasers hc is an amazing book, just to admire his art.

His talent is obvious - he's fantastic at what he's doing. I just don't like it. :(

I like most of what has been posted in this thread.

It is stylized, but not necessarily bad. I think his work would be better with more simplistic coloring or maybe even just in black and white.

Yep. He did a lot of the costume designs, and drew one of the two actual X-Men miniseries.

The only Mad drawing I like is the one where Superman is about to hit that kid.

Don't care for his style at all, but he's obviously talented. I would not buy anything he was on as I don't think his art style is suited for superheroes. I have Darkstars 1 and 2 on my Steam wishlist (he did the character designs for those games and they look great).

Out of curiosity, what about his art style isn't suited for superheroes while Bruce Timm, Darwyn Cooke, Mike Wieringo, etc. are suited for them?

No argument pending, just curious -- I've often heard that his style is "too cartoony" but I know that you like the cartoony art of the guys listed above, so it leaves me wondering. I've heard you say the same for Humberto Ramos.

I don't see them as anything remotely alike. I'm not even sure how I'd try to evaluate them from the same perspective. Ramos and Mad are exaggerated, Manga-ish artists who draw monstrous looking characters; Timm, Cooke, and 'Ringo draw cartoony, but it's still sort of quasi-realistic. 'Ringo might fall closer to Ramos and Mad than the other two, but well within the realm of super-heroic style. I think any of those three would look right at home on a Silver Age or Bronze Age style book and people wouldn't bat an eye. Their work is modern with classic undertones.

Real inconsistent,judging from these samples.

Really?

I tend to think of Neal Adams, Alan Davis, Bryan Hitch, etc. as "quasi-realistic". I think of the guys listed as flat-out cartoony.

But fair enough, I think we don't see things even remotely similar.

I read a ton of manga, and I wouldn't read a comic by this guy.

Emphasis on "quasi"? I don't know. I think the things they exaggerate and change are not grotesque, while Joe Mad and Ramos pretty much define grotesque.
