I just ordered this puppy -- these is the recolored issues of X-Men #1 - 7 from the early 90s.

I'm a sucker for old stuff with modern coloring for some reason.

I got the recoloured issue 1 that came out last October or November: it was a nice job. I'll get this HC.

I think it's funny that stuff from the early '90s is referred to as "old stuff."

And yet...it is.

I just picked this up at my LCS. I've flipped through it and man is it a worthy upgrade.

It's so weird -- the early 90's are as far back from now as the founding of the Marvel universe was from my childhood. My peak year was 1980, and at that time the Marvel universe was only 19 years old, tops. Many of the greatest stories weren't even that old.

I thought the same. Time flies.

Heh. I remember finding some 60's comics in the late 70's and marveling how old they were. My older cousin was dumbfounded that I could think they were old.

Word.

Actually, for me it starts at about age 16.

I got my copy in the mail today... I do love it when Amazon moves this fast.

On first glance, the book looks pretty decent -- I don't know if it's really worth the $30 since I already own an edition with the low-tech coloring and it's definitely not worth $50 for those of you considering a purchase from the LCS. It's not the near-perfect, gorgeous re-coloring of Walt Simonson's Thor run we saw in the omnibus last year, but it is a nice job nonetheless.

My biggest complaint is that some of the Photoshop effects and color choices seem to "muddy up" Lee's detailed linework (and why else would you buy a Jim Lee book?) -- it's all just so saturated looking, like an explosion of color you see in some of the recent Hollywood FX blockbusters. Not much subtlety happening here.

Still, it is nice to see something old made new again, in a way. I'll probably do a side-by-side comparison before deciding if I want to give away my "normal" edition of Mutant Genesis.

Uh... wow. Looking at the dustjacket, I see short creator bios -- and John Byrne is listed ( ! ).

I didn't realize he wrote issues #4 - #5! I always assumed either Jim Lee or Scott Lobdell did!

Did a side-by-side with my old trade and the coloring is a big step up but I see one thing that always irks me in the new version -- coloring the panel gutters black. I don't know why but I've always hated it.

He scripted five issues of Uncanny at around the same time.

I actually kind of liked it at the time. It was such an odd mix, his incredibly bland and perfunctory writing style set against artwork as bombastic as Lee and Portacio.

I HATE black panel gutters and always ask my artists not to do that.

The first issue of X-Men is pretty entertaining. I remember this book making me an X-Men fan as a kid... the dialogue can be painful at times but overall, this is solid funnybook entertainment.

(I was going to argue that all the dialogue is great, but then I remembered that "A big truck, a really big truck" crap.)

I liked Cyclops's deadpan humour. I thought he was a cool character from those first few issues. I didn't know anything about 'And I you' or Madeline Pryor back then.

I knew about it, but at the tail end. Madelyne was already the Goblin Queen. I didn't mind that. I just thought it was too corny.

Oh yeah, I was wondering -- how did Magneto come back after Asteroid M's destruction in X-Men #3?
