From FMQB.com:
Tenacious D have announced their third album, Rize Of The Fenix, set for release in May. The rock-comedy duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass' last release was the soundtrack to their 2006 film Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny. At http://www.rizeofthefenix.com, fans can hear a brief new song touting their triumphant return.

I'm looking forward to this, although "The Pick Of Destiny" was a disappoinment (the album--never saw the movie).

There were some great things on there (especially the title cut), but it was disappointing. Maybe not being bogged down to a movie (which was so-so in itself), we will get back to the demented genius of the debut.

Holy shit, finally. Love the D... and have to agree, outside of a couple of tracks (particularly The Metal), it was a pretty disappointing album and even more disappointing movie.

My biggest problem with "The Pick Of Destiny" was that it was only 33:46 in duration. When I bought it, I assumed (I know, I know) that was a full-fledged follow-up to their first CD, which was, I agree, a work of genius. Unfortunately, not having seen the film, whatever narrative that is supposed to be sustaining "The Pick Of Destiny" is muddled, to say the least.
I did love the "Tommy Medley" that these guys performed on the "In The Attic" CD/DVD set that I bought on clearance at Best Buy for about a dollar. They're certainly talented enough to where they don't necessarily need to perform within the "Tenacious D" framework to make great music.

I think the "School of Rock" soundtrack is sort of an unofficial half-D album. It goes with them, anyway. But the original is still the best.

Quote: Tenacious D announce full details of new album 'Rize Of The Fenix'
Tenacious D have revealed all the details of their new album 'Rize Of The Fenix'.
The duo, who consist of actor Jack Black and comedian Kyle Gass, will release the album on May 15. The album is the follow-up to 2006's 'The Pick of Destiny' and 2001's self-titled debut.
Dave Grohl, who has drummed on both of the band's previous efforts, has once again contributed to the album.
The album has been produced by John Kimbrough and includes 13 songs in total. It was recorded at Kimbrough's home in Los Angeles.
Tenacious D will play a UK show at this summer's Download Festival, playing on a bill that is headlined by The Prodigy, Metallica and a reunited Black Sabbath. The festival takes place over the weekend of June 8-10 at Donington Park.
'Rize Of The Fenix' will also feature Big Talk bassist John Spiker.
The tracklisting for 'Rize Of The Fenix' is as follows:
'Rize Of The Fenix' 'Low Hangin’ Fruit' 'Classical Teacher' 'Señorita' 'Deth Starr' 'Roadie' 'Flutes and Trombones' 'Ballad of Hollywood Jack and the Rage Kage' 'Throwdown' 'Rock Is Dead' 'They Fucked Our Asses' 'To Be The Best' '39' http://www.nme.com/news/tenacious-d/62347

For what it's worth, I've played this a couple of times and have really enjoyed it. It's not as good as the "Tenacious D" album, but is also not the head-scratcher that "The Pick Of Destiny" was.
The weird thing about the album--it comes in one of those gatefold cardboard eco-friendly whatchamacallits with one pocket for the disc, and another pocket (presumably) for the booklet or another disc. The "Rize Of The Fenix" package, however, has a completely empy pocket. All liner notes are printed on the inside of the gatefold. Not sure if the empty pocket indicates some sort of meta-joke or simply the record company using the cheapest packaging posible for an antiquated delivery platform.

I listened to it twice today, once for the first time.
I love it. Hilarious vocals, kick-ass music.

Steve wrote: Is it as good as their first album? Their first album was absolutely brilliant IMO. That said, this album directly addresses the issue of following up that first album (as well as "The Pick Of Destiny") and is worth grabbing for that reason alone.

I think it's a worthy follow-up to their first albums and nearly all the material on it is good. However, their first album was likely written over the course of many years, so this new album doesn't have as many songs and skits... but I feel the material is on the same level, personally.
