Quote:
Joss Whedon Wants A More Personal And Painful Avengers Sequel

If there's any problem that every bad sequel has in common, it's that they try to go bigger than the first film. It turned the zippy Iron Man into the bloated Iron Man 2, the thoughtful first two Spider-Man movies into the villain-overloaded Spider-Man 3, and whatever it is that happened between Transformers and Transformers 2, going too big was at least part of the problem. In a way The Avengers might be the end result of that kind of thinking, taking superheroes we've met in their own movies and mashing them all together, creating the ultimate superhero convergence. But if you ask the movie's director, Joss Whedon, the key to their success going forward will be to boil it all down to the essentials.

Asked by SFX (via Digital Spy) how a second Avengers could top the first one, Whedon had a plain answer for them:

"By not trying to. By being smaller. More personal, more painful. By being the next thing that should happen to these characters, and not just a rehash of what seemed to work the first time. By having a theme that is completely fresh and organic to itself."

Being Joss Whedon, he then threw in a Godfather 2 joke, but that doesn't cover up the fact that he said he wanted to take his Avengers sequel in a "painful" direction. That's pretty much the Empire Strikes Back mode of thinking about a sequel, taking your heroes from the first film and taking everything away from them before the grand finale in the (presumed) third film. But unless your Christopher Nolan, saying that you want your superheroes to be darker doesn't really get you anywhere, and the Marvel universe has set itself apart from the Batman films by being sunnier and happier. Will they let Whedon take things in a sadder direction?

That all depends, of course, on how The Avengers does when it opens May 4. But the fact that Whedon is talking somewhat openly about what he might do with a second film indicates he's happy with how this one turned out. Let us know what you would want from an Avengers sequel in the comments, and if you think Whedon is taking it in the right direction.

Personal doesn't have to mean "dark".

Way too early to be talking sequel.

Giant man in a movie would rock!!! Comic fans are used to it but I think mainstream fans would love to see it.

In Hollywood it is literally never too early to be talking sequel. Superman II was principally filmed simultaneously with Superman the Movie.

I've seen SEVERAL articles over the last few weeks with stuff just like this in it. I think it's because The InterNet news folks are in such a rush to be TEH FIRST!!!1! to get their story online, they don't take the time to proofread stuff anymore.

That's Eric's job. Not mine. I just wanted to get a jump on all the excitement and buzz of the next upcoming Avengers movie since there's so much of it going on.

I don't see any B list heroes being added at this point. Possibly the Pyms, but no Captain Marvels or Wonder Men. I predict that they'll stick to the classic line-up.

I would think you need Pym soon to set up Ultron, Vision, …
Giant Man could look great on the screen, but, really, the probably with Giant Man
has pretty much been… there's Hulk, Thor, Iron Man. Why do you need a giant
who's weaker than all three of them? Why do you need a super scientist if you
have both Banner and Stark, etc. on a team?

Now, if the movie does go smaller… let's say you take the team more towards a
Cap's Kooky Quartet team, but substitute Black Widow for Wanda and Hank Pym
for Quicksilver, I think you have something that could work, a stealth/spy team.

The audience wants to see Iron Man, Thor, and Hulk, though.
Spoiler: show
And you'll need them if they're going up against a Mad Titan, if only to show how
vastly powerful Thanos is.

Anyway, I think back to Avengers Annual #2, where we had the "original" Avengers
of Earth-689 fighting the then current team. I think that would be a fun way to introduce
Hank Pym. Have Kang (Scarlet Centurion) bring one group of Avengers to fight the
other group of Avengers. That'd be great, and you could please a lot of Avengers fans
by having two teams with a lot of variation, but also some sameness.

Yellow Jacket would look good on the screen, especially in a scene
where his "wings" electrify up and he shoots blasts out of his hands.
