Okay, that hyphen, he's a player and that little dot is the football. And when you get to the end of the screen, you just wrap around to the other side while the defense magically stays in the same place... only ten yards downfield.

I still have mine.
I had a Mattel Baseball, and a Sears house brand Football and Basketball.
The Sears had the kick/pass function before the other companies I believe (I remember the other guys at school oohing, and ahhing over it when I brought it. They hadn't seen that function before)
I also used to kick their butts in Basketball, because I found that if you kept pressing the Shoot button after you'd shot the ball, it would cause the dot to go thru the defending dot, and you'd make the basket. Wish I'd been playing for money!
