The number of actors who played the part must number in the hundreds. These are four of my favorites. The new season of "Sherlock" premires on PBS tonight.I've enjoyed this updating of the classic stories, and Cumberbatch is key to the show's success. His Holmes is the same guy in the 21st. century that he was in the 19th. century.Still,it would be funny for him to put on a deerstalker cap, just once. Rathbone's portrayal could be the best one of the first half of the 20th.century.Cushing's was great, but then he's usually great in anything. However,Brett was the best. The Granada TV series will probably stand as the most faithful adaptions of the Conan Doyle tales.Brett's ambition was to be the best Holmes ever, and history may well agree with that.

Totally agree ! You should give the bbc's radio adaptations with Clive Merrison a listen every bit as faithfull as the Granada show, and they did all 60 original stories, to me they're equal with Brett

When did Peter Cushing play Holmes? I'll bet he was great...
Still, I have to vote for Jeremy Brett, as much as I love Cumberbatch in this new series Brett is still the champion. Let's face it, the real reason why both Warner Brothers and the BBC waited this long to produce versions of Sherlock Holmes was to give the public enough time to forget Jeremy Brett.

Cushing played Holmes in a Hounds of the Baskervilles movie,co-starring with Chris Lee.He also played the sleuth in a BBC TV series. He was great,of course. In last night's episode,Sherlock indeed sported a deerstalker! Next week's episode is a redo of Hound of the Baskervilles! Serendipity, folks.

Everyone else is playing Rathbone. Jeremy Brett played Holmes straight out of Doyle's books. Not a hint of Rathbone in him.

Everyone else is playing Rathbone. Jeremy Brett played Holmes straight out of Doyle's books. Not a hint of Rathbone in him. Cumberbatch is a cross between the books and Doctor Who. Again, not a hint of Rathbone.
