The Beach Boys played in Tampa, FL last night at the sold out 2,563 seated "Starz Center', a most beautiful venue for concerts or Broadway play. Having killer seats, 17th row from the stage, dead center provided a perfect opportunity to absorb the most wonderful sound and presentation of this 50th anniversary concert. What thrill for this special occasion With the booming drum intro of "Do It Again" to kick things off, the crowd, my girlfriend and I were out of the seats from the get go. The show lasted more than 2 1/2 hrs with an intermission (believe me, the crowd and band needed it, it was one non-stop performance). There were 15 backing musicians for most of the show including the Wondermints, semi-circling the Beach Boys from the back, left to right. The Boys themselves had Brian Wilson on extreme left stage on white grand piano, then Jeff Foskett, David Marks, Mike Love, Alan Jardine, Scott Totten and Bruce Johnston on keyboard. Because of the great touring band, who have been with Brian Wilson for more than a decade now, know this stuff if they were the originators themselves. The total sound was incredible, not surprising knowing who Brian is a real stickler about that. For me, the most emotional moment of the night came from Carl Wilson, the late singer and founder of the band. He was shown on video singing the gorgeous “God Only Knows” while the live band played and sang behind him. They did the same with a song from his brother, Dennis, earlier in the show with his love song "Forever". With their video performances displayed on a very large HD screen behind the dim lit band in front, you felt they were there. I am not lying, my eyes welled up for both songs. Gosh, I miss Dennis and Carl so much. David Marks, who was a 13-year-old Beach Boy back in the ’60s and rejoined about a decade ago, laid down some great surf guitar solos. The drummer, John Cowsill was perfect. He played with power and finesse. He would have made Dennis proud. Jeff Foskett of course handles all the high parts that Brian once did and covered for Carl as well. Definitely the secret weapon of the band. Alan Jardine looks and sounds great, taking a turn on "Bluebirds Over the Mountain" which was a nice surprise as well as a song and he, Brian Wilson and Mike Love wrote with "All This and That" from "Carl and the Passions" album. Another surprise was the "Sunflower" track, "This Whole World". And of course Bruce Johnston performed "Disney Girls" from the "Surfs Up" lp. The concert songs were put together in loose themes, cars, surfing and early love songs like "Surfer Girl, "Please Let Me Wonder" and "Don't Worry Baby". "Help Me Rhonda" and "Be True to Your School" were one of many that had the crowd on its feet. With a video montage of yesteryear cheerleaders doing their cheers, Hawthorne High logo displayed only then to be replaced by the local "USF Bulls" cheers sounded throughout the venue. Then after intermission some latter period tracks were offered. "Pet Sounds" "I Wasn't Made for These Times" and "Smile" "Hero’s and Villains" were performed along with their new single which got a very warm reception. "Kokomo" was a roundly applauded, didn't know this until Bruce Johnston stated, very appreciably that it was the Tampa Bay / St.Pete radio that broke that song nationwide for them (so now I know who to blame) They did two encores which included "Good Vibrations" and "Fun, Fun, Fun". What a great night, I swear, they must have done over 40 tracks. One right after another. You could not have asked for a better show and doing a 50th Anniversary concert with this performance has provided memories for everyone who attended. After buying our tour t-shirts and program my girlfriend and I went home fully joyful and in recognizing that we were so fortunate to see the Beach Boys one last time. Rick A.

I hadn't remembered this, but they're playing the Bank of America Pavilion in Boston. I've never been there, so I decided to get two tickets. The only pair they had left were way back, but they were centered and covered. Thanks for reminding me and for your review. My wife and I are excited about this show.

Great for you all, Jimbo, JohnG and Walter P . You are going to love the show and being the 50th Anniversary it will also be historic significance and of course, for the main reason, plain old fun. Rick A. PS keep those ticket stubs, they will be collector items

Glad you had such a great time, Rick! I grabbed tickets for the Vegas show on day one. I sold the Van Halen tickets I had for that same night (Memorial Day weekend - May 27). We'll be bringing our daughters too (ages 21 and 16) and we all love the Beach Boys. We've avoided all those other yearly Mike Love "Beach Boy" tours in the hopes that this might one day happen. So excited to see as close to a REAL Beach Boys show as humanly possible. I usually avoid seeing setlists before I attend a concert, but I had to look into this one to see if there might be some deeper tracks I could familiarize the kids with (and maybe even learn one or two new ones myself).
WOW!
Sure there will always be a couple of personal favorites left out ("Caroline No" comes to mind, along with "Getcha Back") but I have ZERO complaints about this setlist (I see it changes by maybe 2 or 3 songs some nights - for instance it seems you got "Hawaii" at your show!). As long as they never remove "Don't Worry Baby" I'll be just fine!
They seem to be doing this entire thing just perfectly, including the Carl and Dennis tributes.
I'm counting the days until our show (21) and it will be 50th anniversary t-shirts and surf board key chains for the whole gang.
I'd better start saving!

I'd better start saving! Oh I did have a great time DanO. Man, I'm proud of you my friend that you are taking your daughters aswell. They will Thank You for decades for the opportunity to see them (Americas band) as they are and not incarnations you had mentioned. Yeah, they played "Hawaii", "Wendy", "Don't Back Down" and many other early tracks I would have not imagine that they would do. It was Brian's idea, he wanted to do many of these tracks. They will keep "Don't Worry Baby" I'm sure, they did this back to back with "Please Let me Wonder" Wow. And yeah, the tributes drew a tear, I'm not ashamed to say. The intermix of the live footage of Dennis and Carl singing and the inserts of pictures throughout their life was very emotional. Carl's video had an overlay of the heavenly stars that was so very touching but I'm saying to much. No more spoliers. Save your pennies for sure DanO, I went hog wild myself but it was worth it. Even the program was top notch. A true keeper if I ever saw one! Let us know what you think when you see them. Enjoy the fun & the sun! (And the Beach balls) see again I'm a spoiler, you didn't read this. Rick A.

Here's the NY Times review of Tuesday's show at the Beacon Theater. Quote: When Memory Sings Harmony
By JON PARELES Published: May 9, 2012 What amazing songs. That’s the lingering impression from Tuesday night’s Beacon Theater concert by the reunited Beach Boys, who until this year had not performed with Brian Wilson since 1996.
Over half a century after three brothers (Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson), a cousin (Mike Love) and a high school classmate (Al Jardine) started a band in 1961 in Hawthorne, Calif., the surviving original Beach Boys have put schisms, battles for credit and lawsuits behind them to perform songs that are no less startling for their Top 40 familiarity. The Beach Boys are in their 60s and 70s now, and it showed, but memory and a knowing backup band supplied what mortal performers cannot.
More than 40 songs breezed by in the concert, nearly every one packing musicianly marvels into its two or three minutes. The Beach Boys performed the obligatory hits along with more obscure songs like “The Little Girl I Once Knew,” a flopped 1965 single with unexpected pauses, sudden harmonic swerves and, Mr. Love said afterward, “nine million vocal parts.” Another oddity was “All This Is That,” a song that Mr. Love, Mr. Jardine and Carl Wilson wrote about transcendental meditation. They had a new one too: “That’s Why God Made the Radio,” with echoes of both “Surfer Girl” and “Sail On, Sailor” carrying lines like “It’s paradise when I lift up my antennae/Receiving your signal like a prayer.” It’s the title track of a new album due in June.
The current Beach Boys also include two longtime associates. Bruce Johnston, who has been in and out of the group since 1965, sang his song “Disney Girls” and seized the swooping high vocal line in “Fun, Fun, Fun.” The guitarist David Marks, who briefly replaced Mr. Jardine in 1962 and has performed in latter-day Beach Boys lineups, joined the vocal harmonies and fired off rowdy surf-rock leads.
They were bolstered strategically by the band of Beach Boys experts that helped Brian Wilson return to regular touring. Jeff Foskett, a guitarist, claimed most of the high, pure falsetto vocals, and took over the lead of “Don’t Worry Baby.”
The Beach Boys played under a video screen showing images of surfboards, cars and bikini-clad women. But if the Beach Boys had been only a surf-rock band, they would have disappeared when surf-rock lost its novelty. Brian Wilson, the band’s songwriting and production genius, had far more to offer. Mr. Wilson, sometimes collaborating with Mr. Love, started out writing songs that invented California as a teenager’s utopia, but he matured rapidly and idiosyncratically.
He was both a mirror and a shaper of 1960s America, as the Beach Boys’ songs moved from the buoyancy and innocence of “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “Fun Fun Fun” to the introversion of “In My Room” and the sweeping ambition (and seesawing tempos) of “Heroes and Villains.”
Even when Mr. Wilson was writing songs like “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” his music was already merging, and extending, the rock ’n’ roll of doo-wop and Chuck Berry, the jazzy vocal harmonies of the Four Freshmen, the melodic grace of Tin Pan Alley and the urge to pack multiple key changes and surreal transitions into the brevity of a single.
Yet while the technical splendor of his songwriting was one of the Beach Boys’ lasting achievements — one that echoes down through generations of tuneful studio experimenters — this wasn’t a concert to get too technical about. It was a show of youthful exuberance and inspiration battling the effects of time.
Mr. Love was the lead singer for most songs, and memory filled out his thinning voice. Mr. Jardine, who sang lead on “Help Me Rhonda” but few other Beach Boys hits, was the heartiest among the band’s original singers. The set list was more egalitarian than it needed to be; Mr. Jardine sang “Help Me Rhonda” — along with most of the audience — but also got “And Then I Kissed Her” and “Cotton Fields” when there could have been more Beach Boys originals. (Meanwhile John Stamos, the actor, who introduced the band, grew intrusive in return visits to the stage, sitting in on drums and clowning on guitar.) The Beach Boys also accompanied video clips of the Wilson brothers no longer alive, Dennis (whose video clip malfunctioned) and Carl, who was heard in “God Only Knows.”
Memory also heard the best in Mr. Wilson’s voice after his years of struggle with mental illness. He sat at a white grand piano, looking impassive but taking part, until near the end of the set, when he stepped forward and strapped on a bass. (The backup band’s bass player continued to play.) And he took his share of lead vocals, determined but faltering, in songs like “Sail on Sailor,” “Sloop John B.,” “This Whole World” and the gorgeously timid 1965 album track and B-side “Please Let Me Wonder.”
As a young man Mr. Wilson was already thinking about how fleeting time is, and the reunited Beach Boys seized on songs like “All Summer Long,” “When I Grow Up (to Be a Man)” and the inevitable set starter for a reunited band, “Do It Again.”
In the concert’s most touching moment Mr. Wilson sang “I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times,” a song from “Pet Sounds” about being an innovator who’s universally misunderstood: “Every time I get the inspiration to go change things around,” he sang, “No one wants to help me look for places where new things might be found.”
The chords and melody climbed, lingered, fell back; Mr. Wilson stayed with them, fighting his limitations, as the Beach Boys sang harmony. It was an aching memory and a heartbreaking vindication.
