My shop was crazy too. There were two super-long lines to check out... the lines were super-long when I got there, just as long after I browsed and started to wait myself... took me nearly 40 minutes to get through the line and as I left, I noted the line was just as long as when I came in.

My LCS owner is making some serious bank today. It's like "Black Friday" for the funnybook shops today.

That sucks. I've been in the bed for the past two days with the flu so I had to skip my trip to the LCS in Memphis this year.

But I have had the chance to read a lot of comics.

Just go tomorrow and see if they have any leftovers. I bet they'd hook you up.

It's hard to be sure though since it wasn't posted twice.

Because there’s a few dirty little secrets behind FCBD that we usually don’t talk about in polite company. The primary one is that, despite being a wonderful showcase of comic book stores and comic books in general, FCBD is a pretty terrible event in terms of generating new long-term customers on specific books. There is not, that I’ve ever been able to determine, any kind of direct correlation between titles given away on FCBD, and future sales of that title. Looking at the overall sales charts, the market would certainly seem to agree as well. The real example in my individual store was "Atomic Robo," which is a wonderfully fun and entertaining comic. It is also one that never has sold well for Comix Experience -- in fact, we’ve not been able to sell more than one single rack copy of the periodical release since at least 2007’s original series. We happily passed out hundreds of FCBD "Atomic Robo" in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. But I decided to stop in 2012 -- we still weren’t selling more than that one single rack copy. All of those giveaway comics? Didn’t move the sales needle one single inch.

It isn’t just me, either, in March of 2008 (just before the first FCBD book) "Atomic Robo" #6 (of 6) sold 3672 copies. In December 2011, "Atomic Robo: Ghost of Station X" #4 sold 3666 copies. No apparent movement in the market after four solid years of giving this title away on one of the biggest days of a store’s year.

And that’s for a good comic book.

I'm not sure using a little-known comic that sells less than 4,000 copies a month is your best barometer for measuring the success of FCBD. I get the point he was trying to make, that people are grabbing up the free copy but not buying...but I know a lot of people who will sample something just because it's free and not go back and pay money for it. Generally, they are big 2 superhero readers almost exclusively who just grabbed free stuff.

Actually, the article doesn't itself doesn't say that -- in it, he kicks it off by saying FCBD this year gave him his biggest single sales day ever. People showed up and purchased comics.

He's just saying that it doesn't seem to bump sales for individual comics. None of the free comics get a bump from giving out a freebie... they don't seem to "hook" people as you'd expect they would.

By and large, I was disappointed with my free books but I will buy stuff on the two I liked -- I plan on getting Superman Family Adventures (from the Tiny Titans team) and the Avengers Ultron story they teased in the Avengers give-away.

Hibbs didn't mention that an independent comic staying steady in sales for four years is awesome, as most tank hard. And the trades have gone way up in sales.
