Since this is JazzFest week, we'll do a song about New Orleans.....or at least a house that's in New Orleans,

Listen to some of the much earlier versions on YouTube...great/interesting stuff.....(Georgia Turner is from 1937)

I like the Blind Boys of Alabama's version...they sing the lyrics of "Amazing Grace" over it.

Animals, with Frijid Pink's fuzz-tone freakout version second.

I voted for the animals but bobs version rates special mention, especially the band version found only on the CD Rom issued years ago.

I hadn't heard the Frijid Pink version before though... and I like it!

The Frijid Pink version was a left-field Top 10 single in 1970.

There are too many versions on AMG to look at everything. The one that comes quickest to mind is a tape i used to have of Josh White jr doing it. he said the arrangement came from his father.

Weird story about that circa 80's concert: White JR, gave a long lecture in the middle of the show about not using hard bristled tooth brushes! (I'm serious). I met him, & other than that bit of weirdness he seemed like a nice guy.

I've actually never been all that fond of the Animals version.

The Animals version was played on the radio a lot when I was growing up, and it was one of the first songs I remember specifically disliking as a kid. I can appreciate it more now but there are still numerous Animals songs that I'd rather hear on a typical day.

As for the other versions, I'm sure I've heard a couple but I guess none of them stuck with me.

My pick is the Animals, although a special note should be given to Tracey Chapman, who does it from the perspective of a woman who works in the House.
