OK, I was wrong about what the forthcoming Joplin announcement would be about. However, here it is: (This is the first press release I've read in eons that does NOT include the word "iconic"!!!) http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases ... 38828.htmlQuote: Long Awaited Release of Seminal Concert Recording from Mythic Soundman's "Sonic Journals" Available Tuesday, March 13, 2012
NEW YORK, Jan. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia/Legacy Recordings is proud to announce the release of Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968, a previously unavailable live concert recording of Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin, recorded June 23, 1968 by legendary soundman Owsley Stanley, a/k/a "Bear," who supervised the mastering of this release before his fatal car accident on March 12, 2011, in his adopted homeland of Australia. The release of the album marks the one-year anniversary of his passing and is dedicated to Bear.
"Care was taken to preserve and ensure the integrity of the music as well as to present an accurate snapshot of the masterful talent of one of the greatest singers of her generation and one of the hottest live bands in the San Francisco scene," wrote Bear's widow, Sheilah Stanley, in her dedication to Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968. "This is Bear's vision -- how he heard the band live, and how he wanted to transmit that to you... this truly is Bear's presentation of this phenomenal band and inspirational music."
Cited by San Francisco rock scribe Joel Selvin as "truly one of the fathers of today's concert sound systems," Owsley Bear Stanley "supervised the sound at the Carousel Ballroom, a former big band dance palace at the corner of Market and Van Ness in downtown San Francisco that, for a few brief, glorious months in 1968 was operated by a collective formed by the Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Big Brother and the Holding Company, a social/musical laboratory experiment akin to inmates running asylums, whose six-month run may well have corresponded with the height of the whole '60s Haight-Ashbury/San Francisco thing...."
An essential and pivotal figure in the San Francisco counter-cultural scene, from beatniks to hippies to beyond, Bear began mixing live sound with the Grateful Dead in 1966 and ran the sound system for the Carousel until Bill Graham took over and rechristened it the Fillmore West in the autumn of 1968. From his first days with the Dead, Bear would record the shows he was involved with as a way to improve his live system set-ups. Bear's "sonic journals" are generally regarded as the gold standard for live concerts from the psychedelic era.
"What is key about these moments captured by Owsley is that they're a true representation of what this mythic band really sounded like live," notes rock scribe Jaan Uhelszki in her essay on Janis and Big Brother's enduring ability to astound and surprise. "The rough magic, the explosive synergy, the dangerous frisson of boundaries being demolished between artist and audience....these 14 songs are a testament to what a force of nature Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company was during these two nights at the Carousel Ballroom. Showing them at the zenith of their considerable power, it is so fortunate that this recording was ever made -- only two months before their break up. This is one of the few living documents of that propitious and monumental pairing."
"He viewed these recordings as windows into the past," wrote Bear's son, Starfinder Stanley, in his notes for Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968. "So this is not just a live recording of Janis Joplin singing with Big Brother and the Holding Company. This is an auditory portal that...can transport you back to the short-lived but incredible world of the Carousel Ballroom in 1968."

Great anticipated project. HORRID cover. Big Brother always gets such a short shrift and no respect when it comes to packaging.

I listened to this this morning. Great show, better than the Winderland disc, possibly the best live Janis yet released. Of course hindsight is 20/20, but it's a shame Janis quit the band just a couple of months later--her 1969 live stuff with the Kozmic Blues Band pales in comparison, and while her "Pearl"-era stuff is good, she's so noticibly drunk duing concerts, it's depressing.

I agree, her best work was with BB.

I can't remember another release that comes with such detailed instructions on how to listen to the album. Be prepared to rearrange your living room furniture.

I've never seen anything like that either, Jim. At least TVs are much lighter these days!

Most of the reviews on Amazon seem pretty negative, so I'm on the fence on this one.

Imho this is as good a live recording of Janis Joplin as you're probably ever going to get.[so if you're on the fence about getting it get off the fence and go get it]

One reviewer said it was from the same series of shows as the Big Brother portion of Janis In Concert, which I LOVE; but several others said it was full of out of tune guitars & vocals.
I did find a low quality play copy online today; plan to listen to it tonight.

Listened to a little more than half tonight. My initial reaction: the reviewers on Amazon would seem to be correct. While Janis sounds fine, the band would seem to be very stoned at best. Lots of pretty major mistakes, both vocally & instrumentally from the guys in the band. Based solely on Cheap Thrills & Janis In Concert, I prefer JJ with BB; but there may be a reason so little has been released. I also own Winterland. I haven't heard it in years, but don't remember being blown away.

I now have had the chance to have a good listen to this CD. It arrived in some decent packaging, thank you amazon.com. The sound is stunning as highlighted on prior reviews, one thing that some listeners may find a bit odd is the mix is PA in one Chanel and other instruments in the second Chanel giving us a 3D type sound effect. It works well and is an aquired taste. I find it enjoyable in my living room, perhaps not so in the car. The performance is very good with the odd bum note and miss cue, but hey it's the 60s man, the music and enthusiasm is what this is all about. I am very happy with this CD, as a brilliant example of the spirit and power of Janis and the music of San Fransicso in 1968.

I listened to this again yesterday morning. Big Brother and the Holding Company are something of an acquired taste, but they've grown on me over the years. I don't buy the whole thesis that they were this incredibly talented band unfairly overshadowed by their lead singer, but their live material possesses a certain audio verité that is fascinating. They could be raggedy at times, but they've grown on me, like I said.

I just listened to part of this on my high end system, & while I stand by my prior comments that the performance was sloppy, I don't think I've ever had a change in sound quality change my enjoyment of an album quite this much.
Previously I had heard it as mp3 on speakers 2 feet away from me (where Bear's no centered anything approach really didn't work).
However on my high end system (with speakers 12 feet away, lossless on an HDCD decoder), I discovered that this is an amazing recording, & especially for cd (though HDCD supposedly brings cd up to 44/20 with a decoder) the performance sounded incredibly real, & also the tapes are in STUNNING condition for being this old.
Cheap Thrills & disc 1 of Janis In Concert are still my definitive BB&THC, but sonically this is really a treat!

Thanks for posting this, perfect timing Geff. I have the new "Pearl" edition as I write this. The mono singles as bonus on disc 1 are amazing. I am definitely getting the Ballroom, especially after your review my friend.
Thanks, Rick A.

I hear you Geff - Me too! It was cool that right after bonus mono single tracks on disc one is a off the cuff Happy Birthday song/ message to John Lennon. Gosh, I love Janis!
