A treasure trove of tapes stashed away by Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott will be released as a boxed set later this year. Twenty six years after the Dublin rocker's death at the age of 36, more of his lost music will be heard by the public for the first time in June. Shortly before he passed away in 1986, Mr Lynott gave 150 tapes to a third party for safekeeping. The cache of up to 700 songs has finally been released to record company Universal Music. "This is an absolutely stunning find," Steve Hammonds, project manager behind the new Thin Lizzy box set, told the Irish Independent. "In every group there's a member who lovingly collects their recordings and in Thin Lizzy that was Phil Lynott, because Lizzy was his baby and his band." It will be the second boxed set in recent times to feature archive work by the band, following last year's 'Live At The BBC' release. But the newly unearthed recordings stretch from Thin Lizzy's years with Decca Records, beginning in 1971, to their 'Renegade' album in 1981. "There are out-takes, unheard versions of Thin Lizzy hits and, most exciting of all, material which was recorded but never released at the time," said Mr Hammonds. "Phil Lynott was such a prolific songwriter. He recorded 12 Thin Lizzy albums, two solo albums, along with his Grand Slam post-Lizzy project, and now we find he had even more songs in his drawer." However, Thin Lizzy members Scott Gorham and Brian Downey will have the "final say" over which songs are released. "The members of Thin Lizzy are fully involved with this project. We have been sending them tapes of what we've found and respecting their wishes as regards the material being issued and the art work," added Mr Hammonds. Label bosses have declined to give more details on why the material is only surfacing now, 30 years after Thin Lizzy split. "Phil Lynott passed the material on to a third party for safekeeping. They held on to it for decades because they were waiting for the right people to come along. "They really didn't trust anyone enough to release it properly. The catalyst was a boxed set of Thin Lizzy BBC sessions we issued earlier this year, which made them believe we were the right people. No money has changed hands, this person is a Thin Lizzy fan." Meanwhile, RTE will mark the anniversary of Mr Lynott's death on January 4 with a new documentary 'The Philip Lynott Archive' to be broadcast tonight and which will feature the first screening of a fully restored version of the 1982 'Old Town' video. And the annual 'Vibe for Philo' gig in Mr Lynott's memory takes place at Dublin's Button Factory on Wednesday. Read more: http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/enter ... 98025.html

Actually, I knew of a box set coming thanks to Steve Hammonds, but no idea of the magnitude of it. I really hope it's not just demos of Phil in the shower and actual rare, but full-fledged recordings some of which I've acquired over the years (but not all that many). But seriously, how could you put all 700 songs into one box set? That would be 38 CDs if it was 18 songs per CD! We'll see what this ends up being, but as one of the biggest Lizzy fans on the planet, all I can say is I'm so happy that the genius of Phil and the band is recognized now more than ever before.

Oops, I just posted a note about this in another thread. Didn't realize someone beat me to it.
These last few years have been big treats for Lizzy fans with all the D.E.s coming out, the BBC boxset, and now this too.
What's next - the complete & upgraded Australian '78 show with Gary Moore? (we can only hope)

Some more great Thin Lizzy news from a great source at Universal...
First off the BBC box set is sold out and now OOP. So, once those that are left are gone, it's done. It did beyond what Universal had hoped. If you want to get this-I'd come up with the money if you can find out how, before this goes for koo-koo prices. Also, the remasters have been selling great, and the final 3 albums to be done (Renegade, Thunder And Lightning, Life/Live) will be out in September or so. Also, we can now change the heading for this thread as it is confirmed that the rarities box set will have 500 songs (approx.) and will be a 6 CD/1 DVD box similar to the Live At The BBC box, though it is not known whether it will have a similar look/style or what the DVD will entail. Right now the box is scheduled for June. And, for those wondering why the live version of "Don't Believe A Word" was left off of the 1981 BBC disc and why the 1983 show from Reading wasn't included on the Live At The BBC box-it's because Scott Gorham vetoed those-who the hell knows why. So, I can say that 2012 will be a really special year for Thin Lizzy fans and of course, we have the Nightlife and Fighting remasters out in March.

We have Scott to "thank" for stopping the new mastering work by Andy Pearce/Matt Wortham on Jailbreak/Johnny/Live & D in favor of cutting corners to use some older existing masterings too. Thanks Scott.

I don't see 500 songs fitting on 6 cd's & 1 dvd! Unless they're all mp3's maybe.

There's a $261 Japan SHM version of the box coming in April. i ASSUME at that price it's the 6 disc, though Amazon shows it as 1 cd only. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006WQJKMK/?tag=imwan-20

Also, we don't know how many of these are 30 second snippets and such. But I was told that Gorham can veto off anything he wants so it's more a case of 500 songs to go from and that the box then becomes whatever amount it is. My guess would be more in the range of 100-120 songs. My question-how did Gorham get all this power?

It's extremely frustrating when the guy in control of the legacy doesn't do the catalog right in our eyes. Alan Well, everyone lived but Phil. So, not sure how Scott (not an original member, but a classic member) would be decision maker. Why not Brian Downey? Unless Downey said to Scott-you do it. I wouldn't say the catalogue hasn't been done right-in fact I am overwhelmed by how much has come out since 2010. This has been a fan's dream come true and continues to be so. So, if Scott was responsible for all of this (and he did speak of this being done about 4-5 years ago), I thank him from the bottom of my heart. Then, I'd ask him why he nixed the new remasters for Jailbreak, Johnny The Fox and Live And Dangerous and went with the Japanese versions (which sound great anyway). I'd also ask why he axed the 1 song and 1 disc from the BBC box. My biggest question would be why he thinks a new studio album will work, but that's another issue. But, otherwise this has been incredible for any Lizzy fan.

The live show from Reading 1983 seems like a natural for disc 2 of the "Thunder And Lightning" deluxe edition. As for the missing "Don't believe a word" that's just mysterious. Maybe they can fit t it in the monster box somewhere?

Wish I could afford the 6 disc BBC box. As of yesterday, Amazon US had 0 copies; it was around $90 US on Amazon.UK.

Not the other stuff, which I agree has been really good. But the "random" dropping of certain things is frustrating. And other things like the new album. It's like when Kiss dropped songs from shows in the Kissology set, or worse, the line from "Strutter" in the Detroit show in the first set. (Oh God, he's not making another Kiss reference in another non-Kiss thread, is he? Yes, he is.) Why would they think that we'd be happy - let's say "content" - with that? Or when they replaced Lee Kerslake and Bob Daisley on the "Blizzard Of Ozz" and "Diary Of A Madman" CDs? In what fevered dream did that seem like a good decision that fans would be content with? And I totally agree about the Jailbreak remaster sounding great - I still love the sound of the drums on this one. Alan

Another example: On 2010's "Greatest Hits" CD/DVD Triumph eliminated many of their classic music videos from that portion of the DVD. Many fans were angry. The bad said the videos were too cheesy. Got news for ya guys-they were ALL cheesy. Plus, that's for the FANS to decide-not you. I really dislike when these guys let their egos run amok and that they think their decisions override what fans want. Look-if there's some horrid demo or sloppy solo that's never been issued and they want to keep it that way-fine. But don't tamper with history or what is already out there. That is wrong. The Ozzy fiasco is the best example I can think of. And they learned (sort of)...a decade later!

Is there any new information about this? It seems to have fallen off the radar. The latest I've heard is in a Scott Gorham interview with Metal Express radio where he says there are a lot fewer than the 700 songs that were reported. There was also a post on the band's Facebook page at the beginning of February where he says it's mostly stuff from the Robbo days. But...nothing more recent. You would think there would be some rumblings if June is really when it is coming out. The new Heart box set is coming in June and we are already hearing about that one, as an example, so...what gives?

It's still in the works from what I've heard, nothing to announce yet. Probably 4 CDs + a DVD. Hopefully more. Nothing definitive on what everything is that will be in there.

I found it a little tough to believe they were going to really do a 700 song box!
