Product Description
AMERICANA is the first album from Neil Young & Crazy Horse in nearly nine years. Crazy Horse is: Billy Talbot, Ralph Molina, Poncho Sampedro, and Neil Young. As you’ll see from the track-listing, AMERICANA is a collection of classic, American folk songs. In their day, some of these may have been referred to as “protest songs,” “murder ballads,” or campfire-type songs passed down with universal, relatable tales for everyman. Some of these compositions which, like “Tom Dooley” and “Oh Susannah,” were written in the 1800s, while others, like “This Land Is Your Land” (utilizing the original, widely misinterpreted “deleted verses”) and “Get A Job,” are mid-20th-century folk classics. It’s also interesting to note that “God Save The Queen,” Britain’s national anthem, also became the de facto national anthem of sorts before the establishment of The Union as we know it until we came to adopt our very own “The Star Spangled Banner,” which has been recognized for use as early as 1889 and made our official national anthem in 1931. Each of these compositions is very much part of the fabric of our American heritage; the roots of what we think of as “Americana” in cultural terms, using songs as a way of passing along information and documenting our past. What ties these songs together is the fact that while they may represent an America that may no longer exist, the emotions and scenarios behind these songs still resonate with what’s going on in the country today with equal, if not greater impact nearly 200 years later. The lyrics reflect the same concerns and are still remarkably meaningful to a society going through economic and cultural upheaval, especially during an election year. They are just as poignant and powerful today as the day they were written.

1. Oh Susannah
2. Clementine
3. Tom Dula
4. Gallows Pole
5. Get A Job
6. Travel On
7. High Flyin' Bird
8. Jesus' Chariot
9. This Land Is Your Land
10. Wayfarin' Stranger
11. God Save The Queen

This weekend, the Master Class at Slamdance Festival featured Coffee w/ Neil Young & Jonathan Demme for their new film Journeys.

A report from the coffee with Neil and Jonathan event by Bob & Kim C. reveals a stunning announcement...

... Neil Young has been recording with Crazy Horse. One album is complete and they are working on another.

No mention of content or time table.

Neil did talk about a group of Americana songs that he had recorded as well with a youth choir...and the Horse. When he spoke of recording with Crazy Horse again "the crowd erupted in applause".

Neil Young and Crazy Horse will release their new LP Americana on June 5th. It's their first album together since Greendale in 2003, and their first album with the full Crazy Horse line-up of Billy Talbot, Ralph Molina and Frank "Poncho" Sampedro since Broken Arrow in 1996. The songs on Americana are all classic American folk songs, including "This Land Is Your Land," "Gallows Pole," "Tom Dooley" and "Clementine."

At the Slamdance Film Festival earlier this year, Young talked about the album. "A very young choir of children plays with Crazy Horse [on the album,]" he said. "They're songs we all know from kindergarden, but Crazy Horse has rearranged them, and they now belong to us."

"What ties these songs together is the fact that while they may represent an America that may no longer exist," says a press release announcing the new album."The emotions and scenarios behind these songs still resonate with what’s going on in the country today with equal, if not greater impact nearly 200 years later. The lyrics reflect the same concerns and are still remarkably meaningful to a society going through economic and cultural upheaval, especially during an election year. They are just as poignant and powerful today as the day they were written."

The disc was recorded at Audio Casa Blanca and was produced by Neil Young and John Hanlon with Mark Humphreys.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse made their first live appearance since 2004 last month at the MusicCares tribute to Paul McCartney in Los Angeles. They played "I Saw Her Standing There" that many critics called a highlight of the star-studded show, though the band has released no touring plans. "I honestly have not heard a solitary thing about touring," Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina wrote on his Facebook page last month.

Here is the complete track-listing for Americana:

"Oh Susannah"
"Clementine"
"Tom Dooley"
"Gallows Pole"
"Get A Job"
"Travel On"
"High Flyin’ Bird"
"She’ll Be Comin ’Round The Mountain"
"This Land Is Your Land"
"Wayfarin’ Stranger"
"God Save The Queen"

In fairness it' been said Neil was working on TWO Crazy Horse albums. Maybe he'll put out a real one after this vanity project implodes.

I don't think this one is going to be up my alley, but with NY other than the total classics (Harvest, Goldrush, Rust, Nowhere, etc), I seem to like the one's everyone else hates & vice versa.

I don't know anyone in the US that sang "God Save the Queen" in kindergarten, but if Neil says it's so then it must be.
I would have preferred "On Top Of Old Smokey".

In the US we sang "My Country, 'Tis Of Thee" whereas farther up in North America (aka Canada) they sang "God Save The Queen." When I was first reading the list of songs I too expected to see "On Top Of Old Smokey" as that was near the top of the charts for singing 5 year olds...um, over 40 years ago.

I forgot for that moment that Neil was Canadian-that makes sense.
As for " ...Old Smokey", it would be closer to 50 years for me.
This should be a fun album.

Too funny, I was about to say the same thing.

This sounds like it is going to be a train wreck of epic proportions. I guess this is better than a Crazy Horse version of Mozart symphonies or 1970 television show themes (which make about as much sense to me as covering old songs we used to sing in kindergarten); have to hear it to pass judgement but doubtful this is going to be something I'd like.

Hoping a real Neil/Crazy Horse record does get released but am not holding my breath.
