Is there a 3rd option?

If you put a gun to my head I'd have to choose the movie version. I like a more rounded "S" emblem. Jim Lee's, and all the current artists', version with the angular geometric design looks harsh to me. But I still want the red trunks back. You just don't re-design perfection.

Snyder's costume sort of reminds me of those organic costumes like Spawn or whatever; it feels like it's got a "fantasy" quality to it that makes me think of magic (Crowe's Jor-El costume is even more in that direction, IMO). But with Allen's recent "relevant" thread in mind, my thought would be to emphasize the "Man of Tomorrow" aspect and make Superman seem as futuristic as possible. He's from a super-advanced race of aliens that value scientific advancement above all and his values and ideals lean toward mankind achieving its potential, both scientifically and ethically, as a species (similar to Roddenberry's Star Trek philosophies). Based on that, I think Superman should really look like a "man of tomorrow", like a guy that looks like he could come from the future. Of the two designs, Jim Lee's "techno" suit seems closer to that mark.

A worthy argument, Hanzo. But Lee's looks like armour to me which, again to me, reads harsh and militaristic. Quite the opposite of your reasoning. Different strokes, I suppose.

I would agree, perhaps, with what you just said if had even the slightest hint of it from Lee's design. But I don't.

Both are awful. Let's be honest, the red trunks on the outside is no less realistic or more hokey than these designs. The classic look was and remains the iconic Superman image in the mind of the human race (he's nearly universally recognized, that's not even complete hyperbole to say it like that).
Since I've only got two choices though, I'll go with the movie one.

Jim Lee by far. The muted colors on the movie version have him appearing to be an evil Superman doppelganger.
Plus, the red belt does a lot of good, though it's no replacement for the trunks.

Jim Lee's redesign.
Now I don't feel well.

In that case I'll take the punch to the face(Jim Lee re-design) over the kick in the balls(way too dark movie version)...

The movie suit just looks like it needs a good washing.
Also, that adornment or whatever it is on his sides do not flatter his figure at all.

I'm not saying it's great but I do feel it's "futuristic" in sensibility -- the "techno" plates and styling in general seems to aim for that. Whether it succeeds is an entirely different manner but in Snyder's design, I don't really see any attempt to look advanced.

Whether it succeeds is an entirely different manner but in Snyder's design, I don't really see any attempt to look advanced. Well, I suppose "Techno" is a correct term, it looks like something from the 90s, like all the Image/Marvel garbage from the early 90s that doesn't look modern nor futuristic nowadays and clashes horrible with more modern sleek and industrial styles. And worse, I think it fails what should be basic Superman redesign guidelines. I tend to be way more forgiving towards superhero costumes in movies; and I suppose that my opinion of the suit is colored by my perception of Cavil as pretty much a perfect Superman. I think he's going for a retro blend of science/magic like in Brannagh's Asgard, but I'm not sure if he will pull it off. I'm pretty much wait and see there. And I need to see a lot more of it, those on set pics are pretty much meaningless, God knows that what Snyder gets from one end of the camera is much, much different from what it gets out from the other end.

If he's not going to have the trunks, he at least needs a belt. Same problem with the new movie Spidey costume.
